Defense "Sleepers" (1 Viewer)

I remember reading an article last year about Buffalo and someone else off the radar that had schedules so you could basically flip flop them week to week.

Not so interested in that philosophy as I am curious about a team defense that should be better than what one might think.

I am in an auction league and I refuse to pay more than a dollar even though we have several guys who are still listening to their junior high coaches telling them defense wins championships! We had a couple of guys bidding 10-12 bucks for "premium" defenses.

So who can I get at the end of my draft thats going to make me look really smart? I got TN last year and they did me proud until the end of the season.

Looking forward to some Shark knowledge!

You are describing what is known as DTBC -- Defensive Team by Committee. You are matching defenses against weak offensive opponents and finding 2 or 3 that you can spend minimal $$ on and cover the schedule. I expect that FBG or others in the Shark pool will be coming up with tandems that they project to work and cost little. The most difficult aspect of this approach is that you are basing the pairing on both offensive and defensive team rankings (turnovers and TDs are mostly random). The most common complaint about this approach is that the preseason rankings turned out to be way off, and true strength of schedule is not known until at least a third of the way through the season. So be prepared to revisit waiver wire DT's a few times during the season to make this work.

Stickboy has it pretty much covered. It's not a great way to start a season because there are so many unknowns. Washington and Green Bay may be a reasonable tandem for sleeper defenses but it is difficult to tell.

I will be targeting Houston's defense this year:

1. Schedule looks great except for the two against Indy and a matchup with AZ and their game against NE is in week 17 which shouldn't matter since most leagues are done.

2. They have a week 10 bye week, so you can draft them and them only and not have to worry about anything for 9 weeks which allows you to load up at other positions since you don't have to have a second D

3. you should be able to get them on the cheap and they have some players on d....offense should be productive meaning the D won't be on the field all day....

Look to grab the San Diego Chargers(Merriman back) or the NY Jets(Ryan's the head coach but D will be good). I like Houston as a sleeper but tough division playing Indy, Jacksonville and Titans twice a year.Surprise D- San Francisco 49ers .
