Delanie Walker to the Titans is big (1 Viewer)

from Rotoworld:

According to the National Football Post's Dan Pompei, the Titans believe they can "get more out of Delanie Walker than they did Jared Cook."
Yikes. Per Pompei, the Titans plan to play Walker "for more snaps than they played Cook." That's not far-fetched since Walker is a far superior blocker, but stone-handed, he's half the receiver. Nevertheless, the Titans believe Walker can split out wide and "(create) mismatches." That's hard to do for a 6-foot-0 tight end. The Titans have been overly optimistic bordering on aimless with their offseason moves. A reckoning could be coming in 2014.

We would hope so...

Walker "tweaked" his knee Thursday and had an MRI on Friday...

Taylor Thompson should already be rostered in Dynasty Leagues, but if he's out there, now would be a good time to grab him.

I could see Thompson getting plenty of playing time this year anyway, the Titans have no one else behind Walker that can catch, Stevens is a blocker only.
Stevens caught more passes than Walker last year.
That's great but they won't lean on Stevens as a pass catcher. If Walker has to miss time it will be Thompson who steps in.

People will be disappointed if they draft Walker thinking he's going to be a big time pass catcher. He's versatile more than anything and excels at doing the dirty work that the elite pass catching TE's don't generally do. Nothing more than a bye week replacement. Not to mention his QB is ###. He'll be great for the team's offense, bad in fantasy.

IF he can. The reason Craig Stevens caught passes last year was that he couldn't (then).

Rotoworld:

Titans TE Delanie Walker (knee) is being held out of this week's OTAs, but "may" return next week.
Walker tweaked his knee last Friday. The Titans are sky-high on Walker's ability in their retooled offense, so they'll take things slowly with his health. At least for now, there's every reason to believe he'll be 100 percent for camp. From a fantasy standpoint, we don't share the Titans' enthusiasm for their Jared Cook replacement.

Titans TE Delanie Walker underwent a Monday MRI on his ailing knee, but coach Mike Munchak does not believe the injury is serious.
The results of Walker's MRI aren't yet known. "It’s just soreness," Munchak said. "It’s probably from him having a long season and not having as much time off as the rest of them. But he’s fine." Walker will likely take it easy before training camp, but there's little reason to worry about his status.

If new Titans TE Delanie Walker catches 40-plus passes in 2013, he will become the first tight end in NFL history to post his first 40-plus-catch season in the eighth year of his career.
Walker has stated he's aiming for 70 catches in Tennessee. History is working against him. Walker's current career high for receptions is 29, and in 2012 he dropped nine of his 37 targets, "good" for a league-worst drop rate of 24.3 percent. Walker had two more drops in the playoffs, giving him 11 on the season. His strength is blocking. Don't bother drafting Walker in fantasy leagues.

Some people must not know Craig Stevens because he's irrelevant for FF.

Walker is NOT there to be a blocking TE and was not brought in to do so.

The Titans have arguably the best blocking TE in Craig Stevens. Craig is such a blocker, he has played Tackle before.

Not too long ago, he was catching passes and most were surprised as he only seemed to get a token catch every now and then like some teams do with their brutish FBs.

The Titans had an excellent FB, a former marine that played the FB position like you'd think a former marine would. They have not been happy about the FB spot ever since. If you've got Walker penciled in to play some FB(or H-back) like the Redskins used to do with Cooley then fine.

A FB needs to have some speed, it's not just taking out a LB, he's gotta get there before the RB. I doubt Walker is fast enough to get there before CJ but maybe.

If Walker is an extra TE, a second one, and blocking that's fine too.

Too many posts here have the Titans benching the best blocking TE for a backup TE you all liked in SF. No way no how not happening. Walker as a receiving TE is how he gets on the field.

I remember a game thread here where one of the Titans tackles got hurt and I was "put Stevens in at T." They didn't and we were all uh oh, game over, free pass to the QB. They did leave him at TE, but his responsibility was clearly to block the opposing team's top DE. The tackle went after the DT. That's not common!

Former HOF OL and former top OL coach....Munchak llllloves Stevens.

There is zero chance Walker replaces him as their blocking TE.

He dropped a lot of balls and some writers and coaches have discussed CJ getting more catches. I think that's a reaction to the drops and somewhat normal to predict as such. If Walker drops 10k passes, he's not replacing Stevens he's getting cut. Walker has never been the center of attention as a receiving TE. The coaches will surely rile him up and make him nervous in training camp-oh so many NFL coaches are geniuses at creating pressure for practice. Expect the Titans staff to do so and him to stop dropping so many. Give Walker some time to go from backup TE to starter and grow a little. We haven't even had preseason games. He's going to mess up and improve, give it some time.

FWIW CJ catching passes articles were only written when Walker was struggling. There hasn't been any before or since. I doubt they do. They just never seem to really throw too much to him regardless who the OC is. He has lined up wide and even in the slot. He is so fast, he commands the opposing team's top CB. No doubt, that's why Heimerdinger would have him line up there. The Titans WRs are eons better than they were then and I doubt there's a good reason to even line CJ out wide anymore. CJ is probably still same as he ever was and that was just uh oh Walker dropped some passes.

Rotoworld:

Titans TE Delanie Walker (knee, PUP) doesn't expect to be activated for another two weeks.
Walker does expect to resume cutting next week. Walker is ticketed for a huge role in the Titans offense, but has gotten off on the worst foot possible. He appears very likely to miss the Titans' first two preseason games.

Coach Munchak's Wednesday Practice Report(on Craig Stevens being the best blocking option)

Yes, he is. He’s a tough, tough kid, very competitive, matches up well against the big guys, the quick linebackers. Then Taylor Thompson is a great kid to learn from. All Taylor’s got to keep working on is his consistency because we’re asking him to do a lot of things with all the movement, all the shifting. We feel good with him staying on the ground too.

* The Titans ran 3 tight end sets a handful of times inside the 10 yard line even without Delanie Walker. Once form 23 personnel that found Taylor Thompson wide open in the back of the end zone.

* Taylor Thompson is being used a lot like Jared Cook was last year, and is often split out in the slot as well as in the mix with in bunch formations.

Craig Stevens is listed as FB on the Titans depth chart. Delanie Walker is TE1, Taylor Thompson TE2.

Interesting change in denomination for Stevens. Suppose they can then line up in the I-formation with Thompson or Walker showing in line blocking and audible out of it to a move TE set with Stevens moving up to the line.

With Walker out, Thompson has a chance to show what he can do tonight against the Redskins.

Rotoworld:

Titans TE Delanie Walker (knee, active/PUP) acknowledged there's a chance he may not play at all this preseason.
Walker had his knee scoped last month, and he's been slow to recover. He initially expected to be activated this week, but now the Titans just hope he can get back on the practice field some time next week. Walker hasn't practiced in over two months, and is going to need to get back into football shape. He's a poor bet to make much of a fantasy impact this year as a back-end TE2.

Quite the streak Delanie Walker is on now.

Up next - Oakland, which just got crushed by Garrett Graham.

2 game streak?
Well, no.

I haven't forgotten about the OP here, which I sort of dismissed when I first saw it:

Delanie Walker is no scrub. While the 49ers waited for Vernon Davis to mature, Walker was the more polished receiver - even as a rookie. The facile argument is that Walker is a step down from Cook because Cook is more talented. I think Walker steps right in as a solid sleeper TE in a position that was very weak in 2012.
I always had a favorable impression of him with the 9ers, I think he got criticism for drops, I remember him looking good in the pass game and making some key big plays.

Turns out he's been in the mix all year, but never emerged as "big" as the OP poster had it.

However, he now has 5 TD's on the year and 3 in the last 4.

5/3/52/1 SF

2/2/13/0 @STL

8/4/62/1 Jax

10/10/91/1 IND

18 targets in the last two games and 3 TDs in 4 games is something that yes I would consider a nice little streak.

Fitz has been in at QB for the last two.

I saw the Indy game, there was talk about Fleener but Walker looked darn good too.

He now has Oakland which just got lit up by the Keenum to GGraham duo.

Then they go back to Indy and then at Denver (pass pass pass catchup etc.).

Then 15. AZ and then 16. @Jax.

For much of the season, the Titans O worked like this-get one WR hot then move onto another WR or Delanie. It's pathetic.

Fitz looked way better recently than he did the first time Locker was hurt.

The Titans Ts have been not good the last couple years and great before. I recently noticed them downfield and well beyond their first assignment. The last game, the announcers pointed em' out a couple times. This will get Walker on the field in passing situations way more often.

I would be quite nervous going with Walker in FF.

Rotoworld:

New Titans coach Ken Whisenhunt compared Delanie Walker to Antonio Gates.

Walker is going to have a chance to be a major part of the scheme. Whisenhunt and offensive coordinator Jason Michael are both former tight ends coaches who have hinted at using a lot of "12" personnel. Walker's career-best 60/571/6 line from last year will be within reach again. "Working with Antonio Gates got me excited about the position, and I think there's a lot of elements to what Delanie does that are similar in that capacity," Whiz said.

Rotoworld:

Delanie Walker said he's "looking to catch 80 balls this year."

Walker had a career year last season, posting a 60-571-6 line and finishing as fantasy's No. 11 tight end. Enter tight end-friendly coach Ken Whisenhunt who compared Walker to Antonio Gates when he got the job. OC Jason Michael is also a former TEs coach. Catching 80 passes may be setting his sights extremely high, but Walker has a chance to be a major part of the offense. Walker is going undrafted in most standard 12-team leagues at the moment.

He's a good TE. The Titans lack of quality WR depth could lead to an increased role this year for him if there's an injury; to start though it is definitely going to be the Hunter-Wright show. Walker seems well placed at 10-12th TE spot. The idea of drafting him there and hoping for more is reasonable.

Most people's early projections have Hunter doing well and neither Walker nor Wright improving. The whole point will be for Hunter to stretch the field and I think you almost have to project more for them if you have Hunter doing well.

Walker is no Antonio Gates.

Walker is a nice value play. He is my starting TE on one of my dynasty teams and while I would like to add a long term solution he appears to be a guy you can squeeze a few decent seasons out of.

Rotoworld:

The Nashville Tennessean believes "all signs point to a big year" from TE Delanie Walker.

Walker has been working on his blocking this offseason in an attempt to stay on the field on running downs. He's coming off a career year and has potential to see his targets increase in Ken Whisenhunt's tight-end friendly offense. Walker posted a breakout 60/571/6 line in 2013. The Tennessean's Jim Wyatt projects Walker to "be in the 60-catch neighborhood" again this season.

Chris Stephens is a player that probably should have been moved to tackle. He is a phenomenal blocker at TE. He is getting older and may be less effective. If their WRs are on their game, there's no reason to put Walker in if they know they won't throw to him. FF folks can just relax that he's getting a breather on first downs. Stephens has very little receptions in his career and only gets the occasional pass. Stephens is a future coach that knows every position and whom they are to block. It wouldn't be a surprise to see Whis play him a lot in preseason in Walker's role or any other role.

Stephens is kind of unbelievable. The Titans have had a slew of OCs since he's been there and every spring they play him at some spot and I think it's just to test this infamous student of the game. He'll play RB (and get smashed) if they tell him to and run to the right spot and/or pickup the blitz well. He can play G or C and has played T and FB. He knows the WR spots and destroyed Cortland one spring and consequently fought him. Maybe curiosity, maybe they want the players to see full tilt effort, maybe it's a break from the grind, idk why but every new coach adores him and has to try and see if he really does study as much as he says. Ramble ramble, don't be deterred if Whisenhunt plays him more than Walker in preseason. It's never happened in season.

That would be Craig Stevens, but yes, Bri is right, except for the age thing.

Although Craig Stevens turns 30 just before the season starts, he is actually 19 days younger than Delanie Walker :brush:

I always do that. Too much northern exposure I guess

I may very will be mistaken but since when does Whisenhunt have a TE friendly offense?
Gates
Huh? He was with SD only one year, which was last year. I hardly think anything Gates did last year was attributed to Whisenhunt.

I just looked and he was with Pitt from 2001-2006.

Then he was with Arizona from 2007-2012.

During all that time, the best any TE did was Housler in 2012 with 45 catches. Even Heath Miller had <40 catches during Whisenhunt's last 2 years in Pitt. Most of the years, TEs had anywhere from 10-20 catches

If anything, Whisenhunt is about as anti-TE as there is in the league despite actually being a TE coach before his tenures at Pitt and Arizona.

The only thing anyone has to hang their hat on is that he recently said he learned something from working with Antonio Gates.

But then again this time of year everyone is healthier than ever, the OL is the best in the league, the offense will run more, and pass more and be more successful and the defense will make the stops on 3rd down...

Everything with a grain of salt.

That aside, don't think anyone expects any TE on the Titans roster to have more catches than Walker. Whether that is FF relevant is another story.

I don't disagree with you, I was just clarifying for whomever made previous statement.

The Titans offense utilized TEs well under Fisher and then Cook threw a monkey wrench into things, then Loggains came along and had the ugliest offense ever. Whisenhunt brings order and a nicely designed offense. That's a dramatic improvement from the year before but yes I wouldn't call it TE friendly.

Hunter is, as of yet, unreliable and will surely be the focus of the D if they're passing in the red zone. That will be to Walker's benefit.

When Locker was under pressure and panicked last year, he threw it at Walker.

I think Walker does fine, typical.

I have never found all that many TEs that increase from year to year with this tremendous growth like other positions. Once they hit year three or so, you kinda know what ya got in FF. I expect Walker to be Walker and maybe a slight improvement.
