WILLIAMS LINES UP VISITS
Adam Caplan of Scout.com reports that Falcons free-agent linebacker Demorrio Williams has already lined up visits with the Chiefs, Bucs, and Bears.
Williams plays on the weak side. In Chicago, he could be the replacement for Lance Briggs.
The fact that the Bears are even looking at him tells a lot about
their faith, or lack thereof, in Jamar Williams and Michael Okwo. I believe that the weakside linebacker in Chicago's version of the Cover-2 plays a lot more in space rather than taking on tacklers head on. Demorrio's weakness in the run game would be less exposed in this system than it was in Atlanta. (Please correct me if I'm wrong on this assumption, Jene). As an owner of Demorrio in at least one league, it would be nice to think that he could eventually return to a semblance of the awesome statistical form that he showed in 2005 when he was in the middle.
That's why I've been so reluctant to pimp Jamar Williams over the past 9 months. It's not a good sign when the team goes after a potential competitor in the fourth round, then isn't comfortable with you in the nickel package. Chicago plays a fewer snaps in the Tampa-2 than the other so-called Tampa-2 teams, but there's plenty of zone coverage responsibility for the WLB. If you aren't judged talented enough in coverage to bump a guy like Hunter Hillenmeyer out of the nickel, it doesn't bode well for your future as a WLB in that kind of scheme. As for Okwo, the Bears wasted no time in throwing him on IR with what was reportedly a minor shoulder injury.Williams is relatively decent in coverage, but will still have to play the run. Take a look at the tackle numbers of guys like David Thornton and Mike Peterson vs that of Cato June (while in Indy) to see how much of an impact a T2 WLB can have. I think Williams would be much closer to June than Thornton in Chicago. Still, it's about as good a spot for Demorrio to land and have a chance to contribute as an every down linebacker.
