Dennis Dixon named starter (1 Viewer)

Dennis Dixon will start at quarterback for the Steelers when they open the season Sunday against Atlanta at Heinz Field. Coach Mike Tomlin confirmed that today after Dixon ran the first-team offense in practice and Charlie Batch ran the second team. Dixon has made one start and just two appearances in his first two seasons with the Steelers. The Steelers were preparing Byron Leftwich to be their starter during Ben Roethlisberger's four-game suspension, but Leftwich will miss two to four weeks after a sprained MCL to his left knee in the second quarter of Thursday night's final preseason game.

:lmao: Thanks identikit. I am a little surprised as I thought they might go with the experience in Batch. It'll be more fun to watch with Dixon though.

And BTW, identikits post was a picture perfect post of what I'd love to see more of in the SP. Good information, accurately titled, and gave the story and the link.

Nothing like just giving up. Way to go Pittsburgh. Atlanta will destroy this bum if even tries to throw theball.

Dixon gives us the best chance to win. I am very happy with this decision. I wanted Dixon over Lefty
I agree. Whether it was Batch or Dixon, the Steelers will attempt to win while Ben is out by running the ball and playing defense. And at least Dixon is mobile enough to be dangerous when he does drop to pass.

More often than not when i see negative posts they come from you Favreco, why is that? Why call a professional player, someone who you couldn't sniff their jockstrap in a million years a bum? I am looking forward to watching Dixon shred Atlanta's defense on Sunday, and also bumping this thread for Farveco afterwords.

per Bob Pompeani of KDKA TV Sports (via twitter):

'Tomlin also said Leftwich is doubtful for this week. a rather surprising development he could be back for the second game, interesting'

Uhhh, actually he missed the newspaper or <!> logo next to the thread title; this isn't the Guppy Pool.

Haven't been following Dixon. What does this do to for Wallace and Ward?
I would say drop down Wallace and maybe bump up Ward a little bit. I think more often than not Dixon is going to be throwing underneath.
Miller?
Could be, though they may need to use him for blocking.
I would think they will need him less for blocking with the more mobile Dixon over Leftwich or Batch.

True. Makes sense.

I like the move too.

Dixon's game play against Denver has been overblown.

IMO the WR (Sanders) was more to blame for both picks.
The first pick in the endzone was a case where Dixon forced the ball when nothing was there instead of throwing it away. These are exactly the kinds of mistakes that an inexperienced QB will make and that can come back to kill you.He has a cannon for an arm and is obviously a great runner but he needs to learn to read defenses and go through his progressions. I have no problem starting Dixon but lets not kid ourselves: the guy is green and has a lot to learn.
