Denver vs Detroit (1 Viewer)

Just got back from the game. I'm not a fan of either team so theres a couple of players mentioned that im not sure of their names. Theres not a ton to write about that hasnt been said.

Starting with detroit, Kitna looked good for the little time he was in. He was looking Roys direction first, and had a nice first down scramble pick up when noone was open. Jones had a couple of nice runs but is still trying to bounce every run to the outside which will again result in a lot of runs for loss and short gains. Against inferior competition, Arlen Harris looked like the better back. He found and hit the holes hard and had some nice receptions too. Orlovsky and McCown both looked great outside of Orlovskys INT which was an AWFUL throw, but that was his only mistake on the night. On D Ernie Sims was an animal when he was in. He was all over the field and looked great. Number 70 had back to back sacks and looked good against the 3rd string offense.

The broncos starters were moving the ball down the field with little to no trouble until the mike bell fumble halted the drive. Not much else to say about them really, they looked sharp. None of the RBs did anything to move away from the pack so not much to note from that. I would say Tatum played the best, and had a nice low block that bought the QB some time. Cutler had a pretty good first game, although not as great as the numbers show. He seemed shaky at the start which is to be expected. He threw a couple of nice balls but he seemed to be staring down his reciever and not looking for a 2nd or 3rd read once the play started which im sure he will be working on. His favorite targets were Kircus and number 88 who both played great games although Kircus dropped the game tying catch on 4th down.

Not much else to say really. Although it was a 20-13 game both defenses looked outmatched with the exception of Detroits 3rd string D making Van Pelt look like a fool. Not much to note fantasy wise but it was a good game and although I'm not a fan of either team it was worth the trip.

Important to note Mike Bell looked good early. 15 yards on 3 carries. Then the big fumble. Shanahan lectured him, sent him back out there and he wasn't as effective.

We'll see.

Five goals revisited

Broncos reporter Bill Williamson lists the team's top-five needs and how they were met in Friday's preseason opener at Detroit, a 20-13 loss to the Lions:

1. Undrafted rookie Mike Bell to show he can handle being the No. 1 tailback.

Bell ran well and had 20 yards on seven carries. However, he fumbled on the first series of the game. He must clean up that act.

2. Top draft choice Jay Cutler to shine as the No. 2 quarterback.

Cutler looked fabulous. He was polished and seemed to handle all situations well as he completed 16-of-22 passes for 192 yards and a touchdown.

3. Rookie Brandon Marshall to continue his push to be the No. 3 receiver.

Marshall looked smooth as he had one catch for 9 yards. But he did suffer what is expected to be a minor knee injury.

4. The defensive front to show it can create a pass rush.

Much of the team's veterans played little if at all; there wasn't much of a rush.

5. Paul Ernster to push Micah Knorr as a replacement for punter Todd Sauerbrun while Sauerbrun serves an NFL suspension the first four games of the regular season.

Ernster played exclusively and showed a good leg. The team is showcasing the youngster because it knows what Knorr can do.

I didn't really have Cutler on my radar to pick up (I'm in dynasty league with CPalmer) but I thought he looked GREAT having played in his first game in the WCO.

It looked like he made very good decisions, very good arm, good mobility and I don't remember him being sacked which is a sign of a guy who's got good timing.

On a different subject, I was trying to watch as best possible the blocking of MBell vs TBell but it looked like most of the plays they ran in the first half weren't geared for the QB to sit back and pick up the best WR - most were runs and moving QB plays where's there's much less chance of a sack. I saw one particular play where MBell just avoided the LB and went for a flare out and the QB was hurried. Another play where TBell stayed back and took out a guy at the knees. One more where the pocket collapsed. That's about it.

So I'd say that MBell ran pretty well but doesn't look anywhere in the ball park of 220 like his stat sheet says - more like 205. I never saw him help wiht a block and he had an ugly fumble where his body was out of control.

TBell ran well, caught a good pass and had a great run breaking tackles, picked up a good block and didn't make any mistakes.

Special mention about Schefler - I'm looking out for him

No NFL Network here. :(How's MBell looking in pass protection?
Dude the story line is his fumble. Tatum Bells box score looks pretty good Dayne hasn't touched the ball and Mike Bell fumbles. You can officially move T.Bell up to late 2nd round pick it looks lik he will not have any compettion. This sux I'm not going to be able to wait until the 3rd to steal him
Dude, possessed bovines from the seventh circle of hell could fall from the sky and land on Cobbs, Dayne, Mike Bell, Damien Nash, Marty Johnson, Alex Gibbs, Mike Shanahan, and John Freaking Elway, killing them all instantly, and Tatum Bell still wouldn't be the #1 RB.

Sounds like the RB situation is just as it was this time last year -- muddled.
Mike Bell's fumble certainly muddles the pictures a bit this season, but last season Denver's RB sitch was crystal clear.
Yes, Mike Bells fumble muddies it is the way to describe it. He was 3 for 15 yards and off to a great start. Then the fumble. Shanahan didn't sound like a guy ready to demote Mike Bell just yet:
"We didn't like the fumble, but that's typical of young guys in the NFL," Shanahan said. "It's similar to what Clinton Portis went through as a rookie. That's why you play those guys in these situations."

Cobbs got a good amount of carries. How'd he look? Does he have a prayer?
Most were in garbage time. The lions 3rd defense couldnt stop anything. Marinelli and donnie Henderson started rotating in some starters and 2nd stringers to kill the drive and preserve his first win. That said. He runs North south and has a good prescence. and he is in the denver system. so who can say, but i liked his style more than Mike Bell. Ced kept both hands on the ball and kept it safe just like a jerome bettis in a AFC championship game....opps bad example :D

Dunno about Detroit, but Denver sat Gerard Warren, Champ Bailey, and Courtney Brown (possibly more, but those 3 for sure).

I was impressed by the Lions in their first preseason game. I think the bend but don't break style of defense seemed to work out.

I am really excited to see more from E. Simms, he is a beast!!! Defensive Rookie of the year wouldn't be out of reach for this kid!!!

Second round pick S Daniel Bullocks looked great as well!!!

Detroit played all three QB's and they all looked better than Harrington or Garcia last year.

K. Jones had some early work and looked great at times and ok the rest of the time.

I didn't see Calhoun at all which suprised me a bit.

Arlen Harris was the most impressive RB for Detroit with about 5 yards per carry. (7 carries for 36 yards)

he also had 3 receptions for 26 yards and a TD.

On the other side of the field Denver had a rookie stand out too.

J. Cutler looked fantastic he really only made one bad throw in my opinion.

M. Bell, with the fumble, struggled a bit

Circus Kircus looked very good too.

Over all I saw a lot of good things from Detroit.

This was a huge issue in college for Bell and as we all know, Shannahan is about the last coach you want to fumble for. I see this as a HUGE issue as we progress into the season.

for whoever was complaining about the Lions D-line...note the very significant inactives in that dept.:

LIONS' INACTIVES

Cornerbacks Fernando Bryant, Stanley Wilson and Keith Smith; linebackers Boss Bailey and Teddy Lehman; offensive linemen Damien Woody, Barry Stokes and Rex Tucker; defensive linemen Shaun Cody, Cory Redding and Shaun Rogers; running back Shawn Bryson, tight end Dan Campbelll and wide receiver Scottie Vines.

And we thought Putzier couldn't block!

Scheffler goes one-on-one with the LDE and waves at him as he goes by. This is the baseline that the coaches will use to make him a lot better, to look back on and say "....boy, we can't believe that you were actually that bad."

On the other side, he's a deep to intermediate threat, big time, as a pass catcher and looks to have Shannon Sharpe type potential as a receiver.

His blocking is a total lack of technique....that's fixable.

Cutler throws lasers. :banned:

Not sure about that. Shanahan has some patience. Holmgren will trade a "fumbler" to green bay for a six pack of Miller Lite

Will any of Detroit's receivers STEP UP this year? The amount of talent this club has at WR is mindboggling! These guys all have too many on and off-the-field issues. Good luck!
