Desert Island "Discs" Draft (2010-2019) - We Did It (2 Viewers)

20.ee - D'Angelo and The Vanguard - Black Messiah (2014)

D'Angelo dropped this album out of the blue at almost the exact midpoint of the decade to reclaim his throne from a new generation of neo-soul performers.  Black Messiah bubbles along at it's own measured pace, generating its heat from friction rather than velocity.

Sugar Daddy

Back to the Future (Part I)

Another Life
This one caught my eye in prep for this, actually. Gave it a quick listen, but the friction chafed. I went with Saadiq as the neo-soul King for his movement at this velocity. And, I actually thought you might take this...but that was fleeting and never really fleshed out nor did I dwell upon on it.

I've liked Saadiq's work since Tony! Toni! Tone! did it the first time and could have used a local on my island.  I think he's a better producer than performer though; his voice doesn't captivate me over a full album.

Your link was frightening.

Oh sure. i figured that you liked Saadiq. Tony! and Lucy Pearl were stand outs to me back in the day, even.

My link was just in keeping with my talking. I like the sped-up aspect of Saadiq, but in finishing a thought, I guess I need to warn people before they get Geoff Rickly screaming at them.

Also, I'm in Toronto for a beer/sex/vegan food weekend and we've accomplished all of the above at least 2x each today, so wife us sleeping and I am :banned:

I liked Vernon's record from this year more than any other since he discovered Auto-Tune.
We had Kanye and Father John Misty conversations in here and I put Vernon in the same conversation but that may be unfair. I go back and forth between loving him and thinking he's an unbearable #####. And when I saw him at Bonnaroo, I loved his first set and thought he was an unbearable ##### in his second.

Your dusty, your dusty eyes
They leave me pale and wondering
Have I swam too far this time
To make it back on my dime

May not be the first
And I'm sure not the last
I've got a craving for a
Thing of the past and
It's hitting me hard
I don't know, I could be bored

The Santa Ana's blowing
And it's calming me down but it's like
You're in the air when I get into town

Hear what I say, we are the business today
#### #### is finished today

We dropped a classic today
We did a tablet of acid today
Did joints with the masses and ashes away
SKRRRT! We dash away
Donner and Dixon, the pistol is blastin' away

Live like 9-5, I rhyme and come alive
My grind divides fine through my divine eyes
It's prime time, you wish you could buy time, but it's my time
Thoughts against I, blasphemy, it's like a vice crime
I roll 'em thick and I ignite mines
I don't even get high, I just get equally back in my right mind
I'm getting lethal with these nice lines

Life is a journey, to live is to worry
To love is to lose your damn mind
But living's a blessing so I am not stressing
'Cause some of my friends ain't survived
Death's a release but a much bigger beast
Is a living on limited time

Drawn up all my findings

And I warn you they are candid

My every day begins

With reminders I've been stranded on this

Planet where I've landed

Beneath this gray as granite sky

A place I wake up blushing like I'm ashamed to be alive

How long can a world go on under such a subtle god?

How long can a world go on with no new word from God?

See the plod of the flawed individual looking for a nod from God

Trodding the sod of the visible with no new word from God

We're just drinking margaritas at the mall

That's what this stuff adds up to after all

Magenta, orange, acid green

Peacock blue and burgundy

Drinking margaritas at the mall

🍯🍯

If you do it right
Let it go all night
Shadows on you break
Out into the light

If you lose your way tonight
That's how you know the magic's right

Why try and tell you, when you don’t give a ####?

You don’t believe in magic?

You don’t believe in luck?

There is no “right”

There is no “wrong”

Same damn chorus, same damn song

Saran Wrap and little colored balloons

A black nickel, a needle and a spoon

You say this is ain’t what I am?

Well, this is what I do to warn your ghost away

I know you don’t believe in magic

Nobody does, not anymore

I held my hands out, blood stained and I got my doubts

I tried to wash it off

Yeah, I tried to wash it off

Red as Southern clay

Blood-red as Mississippi clay

And yes, it still remains

gosh darnit, it still remains!

Where is Pilate’s water?

Tell me! Where is Pilate’s water?

Nightmares in daylight!

I’m stealing the birthright!

Off 16th and Mission!

Off 16th and Mission!

I took an ambulance ride

They said I should’ve died

Right there on 16th and Mission, on 16th and Mission

I kissed your lips and broke your heart
You, you were acting like it was the end of the world

Nice dichotomy in the last two lyrics, by the way, TDM.

See, this weight is on my shoulders, pray Jehovah lift me up
And my pain is never over, pills and potions fix me up
I just want to live it up, can a mother####er breathe?
Life ain't always what it seems, so please just lift me up

You say
The price of my love's not a price that you're willing to pay
You cry
In your tea which you hurl in the sea when you see me go by
Why so sad?
Remember we made an arrangement when you went away

14.x Fleet Foxes, Helplessness Blues (2011)

Been on my shortlist since the beginning and I'm surprised no one took it at all. I prefer their debut, sure, but this is still lovely, particularly on good headphones.
