NEW: The #FIFAWorldCup match in Seattle on June 26 had already been designated as a “Pride Match” before the fixtures were decided. Now we know the teams who will play in it… Egypt and Iran.

Both nations have draconian anti-gay laws.
And right on cue the Egyptian FA has already sent a long and detailed complaint to FIFA about this.

They specifically called out FIFA stance on being apolitical. The Egyptian FA clearly did not watch the draw.

Shockingly, Iran has also strenuously protested. They should have it just to piss off Iran. It's not like the US is going to allow many to come into the country to watch, anyway.

Given that it is the 3rd match of the stage and thus played at the same time it would be a very FIFA solution to flip the location with the Belgium v New Zealand match set for Vancouver.

Seattle has said they have no plans to change anything btw.
-QG

Nor should they. What happens if they refuse to play?
Best guess is...whatever the most corrupt possible solution is. Some options:
  1. If only one of them refuses to play, Russia is awarded a spot in the World Cup for reasons
  2. If both refuse to play, either Saudia Arabia or Qatar is moved into that group, creating a pair of 3-team group (from which at least two advance)

Other ideas that meet my criteria?

The game is rebranded as American Pride game with a full military parade pregame with all proceeds going to the new FIFA peace award winner.

I wonder if all of the shenanigans are going to depress international demand. There is a story floating around now that the US will require international travelers to provide 5 years worth of social media history. Twisted way to look at it but maybe it’ll save some of us money on tickets.

I think international demand will be lower due to all the problems. We are sadly the laughingstock of almost the entire world now. The international reactions to the draw told us everything we need to know.

I think there will still be plenty of color and vibrance in the stadiums because we are such an enormous melting pot such that many teams will feel incredible support even if the number of international fans traveling are not as high as we would have expected before all the problems started.

I am a travel advisor from Canada , I know other agents clients have been turned away at the US/Canada border crossings for social media posts and comments about your president to the customs agent at the border.
There is 0% chance of this not becoming an issue for the world cup

Try living in Europe then re-evaluate
I don't understand.

Are you saying the vast majority of European fans like what is happening with our "leadership"? That surprises me if true.

I would be very happy to hear that our problems are not effecting travel from Europeans. I am pretty sure that won't be the case world wide though

Without wishing to go into politics, if you think you have problems the UK says hold my beer, as does most of the continent

Both automatically awarded 9 points. 3 points at triple damages.

So a prestigious FIFA Peace Prize wasn't enough of a bribe?

It's way broader than that:
  • A new voluntary "self-reported exit" feature allowing foreign nationals to confirm their departure from the United States by submitting passport data, a live selfie and geolocation through CBP's mobile app.
  • Mandatory selfie uploads for all ESTA applicants, including those applying through third parties such as travel agents.
  • A mobile-only ESTA application, eliminating the web-based option after CBP documented widespread abuse linked to poor-quality image uploads and fraudulent third-party websites charging travelers unnecessary fees.
  • Expanded "high-value data fields," including applicants' social media accounts from the past five years, phone numbers and email addresses going back a decade, IP addresses, and even biometrics such as fingerprints, face, DNA and iris scans when feasible. These additions stem from a January executive order targeting foreign terrorist threats.
  • Updates to the Visa Waiver Program, including the recent removal of Romania, and the expectation that additional countries may be added in the coming years.

Probably helped with this: Justice Department moves to drop charges in international soccer corruption case

I honestly haven't been keeping up with the ticket sales on this because of all the nonsense early on and what I've been reading.

I just looked and there's tickets available to see Netherlands in KC for like $350 each. Is that reasonable? Are these going to sell out?

Maybe it’s wishful thinking but I’m leaning towards KC will actually be reasonable for the group stage. We have 4 group matches and 2 knockouts - the quarterfinal will be crazy expensive but with that many matches there is plenty of supply. For fans who just want to go to a match and don’t really care who they see, KC is going to be a great option. I plan to attend Ecuador-Curaçao and Algeria-Austria, and I don’t think either will break the bank. Right now I wouldn’t pay $350 for that Netherlands match. I’m betting it’ll be cheaper once all tickets have been released.

Yeah I’m done with the FIFA site - not even going to bother anymore. Maybe I’ll poke around once their resale platform is up and running.

Yeah, I was looking forward to this, but I have no idea how to get tickets for teams / sites / etc.
I'm going to do what I normally do and wait until closer / day of and look on resale sites.
Probably would have been cheaper and easier to get to games in Qatar...

For a lot of people in the US it might ultimately be cheaper to go to Monterrey if all you care about is seeing a match.

What I gotta figure out is if this is basically 104 lotteries. If each game's lottery is separate that means that may be you apply for 6 games and win the right for tickets to 3 of 'em. But apparently whatever you win the right to it is take it or leave it. So if you apply to 6 games wanting to get 1 in the scenario above you either have to buy all 3 or none.

Gotta research

I'm in...

FInals tickets- $4,185, $5,575, or $8,680

yeesh.

Kinda tempted tbh, but dayum.
I out all the US games and a bunch of NY and PHI games.

Regretting not putting the final. 10k is a lot of loot...but also a once in a lifetime thing to have the final in my backyard (saving on travel expenses)

What kind of prices did the group games in NJ and Philly have? The biggest game I will put in for is one of the knockouts that lands on my birthday.

Those putting in for the final brace yourself for a $20k or whatever charge on your credit card cuz they will apply the charge for the tickets you win right away. And you can't split up your decision it looks like. You buy all the ones you are selected for or none

Yeah and then you also have any of the other matches you "win". One quirk is that if you go the Brazil path (they don't have it for every county) their Round of 32 match is cheaper than all their Group games

If you want to see a cheap match come to Atlanta for game 72 - Uzbekistan vs Jamaica/Congo/New Caledonia. No way that stadium is getting filled. I'll take the chance and wait until near game day to pick something up. I can't imagine they'll be terribly expensive.
