DET: LIONS SNAG TULLOCH!(LB) Durant(LB) Houston(DB)Leggett(S) (1 Viewer)

The fact of the matter is, they are all over paid...the market determines the value, not your opinion, sorry. If they overpaid, it means you have to pay more to compete in the market level, they are not doing that. I didnt create the nature of the beast, but to use the excuse they are overpaid, you must have missed the last 5 months of what football is really about. Teams have to spend money, so it makes that excuse even more valid.
Like any market place, there are good deals and bad deals. With the salary cap, you can't afford to be the one making the bad deals.
Your right there, but is Joseph or Nnamdi a bad deal for shutting down half the field, when you are already all over the QB?

16 mil under the cap and they sign...no one...not one person who can help this team in anyway. DavisLeggettDurantWright The Lions are stuck with other teams scrubs...a Jags LB, a Browns CB, a Chiefs CB, and a Bears WR....am I wrong, or did we get players off teams at their worst positions that they had no interest in? Lions have me so angry at them after a stellar draft, its easy to see why nobody ever really has faith in this team what so ever. MM had a chance to prove the Lions are back...failed patheticly. Tulloch, Joseph, Nnamdi, Cromartie, Clements, Barnett, Lawson, and Poz...all out there at position they need so badly....and they settle for scrubs. WOW, does anyone wonder why this was the franchise that went 0-16? Lions Blue is the image of losers, never will change.
The LBs in particular are getting badly overpaid and I for one am glad to see the Lions staying away. They don't have much cap room to begin with. Also, it's not like they are a player or two away from being a Super Bowl contender. This is a marathon for them, not a sprint and overpaying for players at this point in their rebuild is not all that smart. I think the Durant signing was great and although he has been hurt a lot, he definitely has plenty of talent and should be a good fit in this defense. Wright was a very good CB in his first 3 years before struggling last year, partly due to injury. It is a low risk signing him for one year. They still should have enough money to sign another CB or LB. As for the names you listed, Nnamdi was never coming here and even if he wanted to, the Lions don't have the cap room. They tried to sign Joseph, but I think the cost was too much. If they had been a cornerback away from being a Super Bowl caliber team, then they may have signed him. But they aren't and I have no problem with them not paying him $10 million per year. Cromartie is overrated and Clements is on the downside and both of those 2 want too much money. The Lions reportedly made a strong offer to Tulloch and he turned it down. Personally, I'm glad he did because I think he is among the most overrated LBs in this year's free agent class. The one interesting name you listed is Barnett and some of the locals think the Lions will go after him. But I would rather see them go after another CB (possibly Richard Marshall or Carlos Rogers), or possibly re-sign Chris Houston, although I think he is overpricing himself. The bottom line to me is I am glad to see the Lions staying away from overpaying some of these free agents. Some of the contracts that have been signed are ridiculous. Like I said, my opinion would be different if a player or two could make this a legitimate Super Bowl contender, but that is not the case.
:goodposting: The guys the Lions missed out on so far have been overpaid. The Lions are picking up guys with potential, several who have had injuries which have decreased their value. It is risky, but at least they are filling those holes. I still think they will get a couple of good signings to put them in contention for a playoff spot.

Market or not, some of these contracts have been ridiculous. The Lions don't have a lot of cap room like some of the teams do that have been signing players to huge contracts. They have to be smart about this. Just because some teams are overpaying for players doesn't mean it's the right thing to do. The one exception to me is if a team can become Super Bowl contenders. If that's the case, overpaying is not a big deal. When a team has several weak areas and is still a year or 2 away, then hamstringing their cap with bad contracts is foolish...not to mention that they simply do not have a lot of cap room to begin with.

Tulloch hasn't signed yet has he? From what I've seen, Tulloch is still a possibility in Detroit, especially since they now lost out on every one else. Tulloch is the key on whether the Lions are interested in winning.
It says in this thread on page 8, that he has already turned down Detroits deal.
The most current reports are the Lions are still in the running. He tweeted that he will make a decision soon. I am not sure what happened with the old offer, but I think that is old news now.
I don't think the Lions have enough cap room to sign Tulloch now.
Also my point, cuz they wasted it on guys like Leggett and Davis and Durant, and Wright....no one who adds upgrade to what they already had....and now they cant do much.
Durant and Wright are huge upgrades. The Lions had no outside LBs to speak of and were and are still very weak at CB.

You keep mentioning competing for a SB, how will they ever if they dont make moves like this? The draft? if you do that every year your gonna be paying high picks every year anyways, and by that time CJ and Suhs contract will be up, and then your back to where you started.

They don't have anywhere near the cap room to go after a player like Nnamdi...who, as great as he is, is not worth the 15-18 million it would take to sign him. Before this all started, the Lions were only about 11 million or so under the cap. They made an attempt to sign Joseph and Tulloch, but Joseph got $10 million per year and that is more than they could afford to pay based on their cap. Tulloch turned down a strong contract offer. It's hard to blame the Lions for that.

The draft is clearly the best way to build a team. The time to potentially overpay for a free agent is when that player is the missing piece. There IS a salary cap to consider too. what's the point in spending all of your cap room on one player like a Joseph wehen it means the other positions can't be filled? Had they signed Joseph for that same $10 million he got from Houston, they would not have been able to sign Durant or any other quality LB, plus they still have little else at CB. How would that help them?

So from the looks of it, people are happy with the moves they made? ARE YOU KIDDING ME, these are 2 bit scrubs, all of them.

They got a corner the Browns didnt want, and needed.

They got a WR that the Bears didnt want, and yet need.

Durant is a LB from Jax that they didnt want yet needed.

And Leggett, lmao, who?

But you think this wasted money, yes wasted money, helps the team in anyway? If the rule is "you dont let your good players go", you resign them...why did these teams let them go, and not even attempt to resign them, any of them?

Rashied Davis will not even be on the final roster. The other guys should contribute a significant role if healthy. None are all-pro, but they should be serviceable if healthy. No inspiring pickups, but not 2 bit scrubs.

Davis is exceptional at covering kicks and unless the Lions add a receiver, all he has to do to make the roster is beat out Derrick Williams. If Williams doesn't show drastic improvement, he's as good as gone.I agree with your other points.

Ok, well I guess you guys do like, dare I say, Leggett, Durant and Wright. None were good at all last year, at all! but if you think they are servicable, I guess your entitled to your opinion. BTW, Wright only had 1 pick last year. Our currewnt corners did better, whats that tell you? Its not a good move, its depth, sad depth.I dont expect you gusy to see my POV, as your blinded by the hope the Lions may be better. fact is they dont make the moves to compete, they will not.

Durant and Eric Wright are standard Mayhew moves. Young guys with top level talent whom haven't panned out exactly as their prior teams had hoped. They come in on cheap deals with a lot to prove. That describes the signing of or trading for:

Lawrence Jackson

Chris Houston

Alphonso Smith

Corey Williams

Bobby Carpenter

So far, I'd say the success rate is pretty high. I will take a wait and see approach with Durant and Wright. I think the Lions will continue to play FA slowly and look to pick off guys from the cut list whom represent good value. The Lions would be wise to add depth to make sure they have NFL talent from top to bottom at every position.

I read somewhere that Sanchez was willing to rework his contract to free up cap space so the Jets could go after Nnamdi. I wonder if the Lions considered approaching Stafford about doing this. I love the leadership Stafford brings to the team and his upside is great, but he hasn't earned the money he's been paid. It would seem like a really cool move for him to at least offer to restructure to free-up space.

I'm a bit surprised we haven't heard any rumblings about talking to Barrett Ruud. He'd definitely be a startable LB for them.

From Lions' beat writer Tom Kowalski:

Talked to a few NFL personnel people ... they think Detroit landed a terrific player in Eric Wright .. coming off bad year, but great talent
http://www.footballoutsiders.com/player/17265/eric-wrightThis advanced stats site indicated he was a top 15 CB in 2009, but was bad in 08 and 10. His strength seems to be against the run. Also, between 08-10, the player he is most statistically similar to is none other than Chris Houston.

We’ve been waiting for Nnamdi Asomugha to sign so that the other cornerback dominoes could fall in behind him. Perhaps Johnathan Joseph’s deal with the Texans will have the same effect.

The Lions appear to have reached agreement with Eric Wright, formerly of the Browns. Wright is now sporting a Lions hat on Twitter and got a congrats from former LionGerald Alexander. NFL Network’s Jason LaCanfora confirmed Wright is going to Detroit.

“Lets get it goin Detroit!! Lets flip the script!!” Wright wrote before linking to him intercepting Matthew Stafford in 2009.

We almost forgot Wright was a free agent, but this is a worthwhile gamble.

A year ago at this time, we heard Shawn Springs list Wright as one of the best five cornerbacks in the league. That’s a stretch, but the kid has plenty of talent and had a stretch of excellent play in Cleveland. He’s young and we assume he is coming at a discount price.

They rushed to the podium when he was still on the board with the 13th overall pick, and they rushed to sign him before the first practice today.

The Lions agreed to terms with first-round pick Nick Fairley late Thursday night on a four-year deal worth $10 million.

The contract includes a $5.7-million bonus and a fifth-year team option.

"Everybody is excited to get him in on time," agent Brian Overstreet said. "He's raring to go and what you'll learn about Nick from being around him and spending time with him is he's the ultimate team guy. Whatever the team needs he's willing to do. He just wants to come in and fill his role and work hard and develop the new Silver Crush."

Fairley was a surprise pick by the Lions after the top-five talent fell to No. 13 overall in April's draft. The pass-rushing tackle out of Auburn joins last year's defensive rookie of the year, Ndamukong Suh, Corey Williams, Cliff Avril and Kyle Vanden Bosch on what should be one of the NFL's best defensive lines.

While Fairley's deal took both sides deep into the night, the Lions signed their other four picks to four-year contracts early Thursday.

Seventh-round pick Johnny Culbreath signed a $2.2-million deal with a $64,000 signing bonus, fifth-round choice Doug Hogue got a $180,000 bonus, and second-round picks Titus Young and Mikel Leshoure agreed to undisclosed deals.

All five rookies can take part in the team's first practice today in Allen Park.

'WE MISSED ENOUGH'

He didn't have the benefit of rookie camp, minicamp or an off-season program because of the lockout, and the last thing Leshoure wanted was to miss time in training camp, too.

"We missed enough football," Leshoure said. "That was the No. 1 thing, getting in there and getting going as soon as possible."

The Lions signed their entire rookie class to contracts Thursday, ensuring all five will be on the field when practice begins at 10:15 a.m. today.

All rookie contracts are four years, though Fairley's includes a fifth-year team option.

"Thank GOD, Family and Fans! I'm officially a Lion! Time to get to work!" Fairley wrote on Twitter.

At a news conference early Thursday, Lions coach Jim Schwartz said the NFL's new collective bargaining agreement helps ensure rookies get to training camp on time.

"The whole thing was with the rookie wage scale and the whole system there, it was all designed to prevent holdouts and to make it an orderly signing process and a salary structure that made sense," Schwartz said. "But again it goes back to (the deal was) approved on Monday and not only do you have 32 teams, but you have hundreds of agents and some of them (were) very, very well clued into the proceedings and some of them not. Some of them are still getting educated.

"In the future it will be probably a lot easier than right now. ... We have time there, but as soon as we get those guys signed, they can be on the practice field."

Along with locking up their rookies, the Lions made two minor moves Thursday, agreeing to contracts with receiver Rashied Davis and defensive back Maurice Leggett.

Late Wednesday, they settled on terms with their biggest free-agent acquisition to date, linebacker Justin Durant from Jacksonville.

Durant has battled injury problems throughout his career, but he's just 25, entering his fifth season and adds athleticism to a front seven that returns just one starter at linebacker in DeAndre Levy.

"It's going to be fun playing behind" the defensive line, Durant told the Associated Press. "I think it's going to be a great situation."

The Lions missed out on their No. 1 cornerback target Thursday when Johnathan Joseph agreed to five-year deal with the Houston Texans.

They're still in the market for help at linebacker and cornerback and have expressed an interest in former Chargers linebacker Brandon Siler. Another target could be linebacker Nick Barnett, who's expected to be released by the Packers. Barnett tweeted Lions receiver Nate Burleson on Wednesday asking for general manager Martin Mayhew's number.

Free agents can begin signing contracts at 6 p.m. today, but Schwartz said the Lions won't be done tweaking their roster for some time.

"The most important thing is finding good football players that fit what we need them to do," Schwartz said. "Not trying to fit square pegs in round holes and not trying to press and sign somebody, draft somebody, acquire some player just because of a circumstance. And when we've been patient that way and had an evaluation, our objective is just (to) get good football players. That'll continue with the negotiations that we're going through right now.

"Friday at 6, that's not going to be the finish line. There's going to be a lot of (free agents) that are going to be announced then, and there's going to be a lot that are going to be after that. It's going to be a work in progress."

Stephen Tulloch: Lions not out of running for Tulloch yet

Stephen Tulloch - LB - TEN - Jul. 29 - 2:18 pm et

MLive.com's Tom Kowalski insists the Lions aren't out of the running for free agent LB Stephen Tulloch.

The Detroit Free Press has been insisting otherwise. "Until Tulloch signs, the Lions are in play," writes Kowalski. We suppose Detroit will continue to be in the hunt because Kyle Vanden Bosch is personally pushing hard for Tulloch. It's still hard to imagine them matching their initial offer ($6 million annually, $10 million guaranteed) after signing Justin Durant. Jul. 29 - 2:18 pm et

ALLEN PARK - Remember all the chatter about Colorado cornerback Jimmy Smith during the draft? He was one of the most promising, most athletic corners available but was downgraded because of his off-the-field issues.

Well, that was Eric Wright in 2007. The very physical and athletically gifted Wright was a first-rounder, but personal issues pushed him down to the 53rd overall pick where the Cleveland Browns took him in the second round. Wright had enrolled at USC, but legal problems, including drug allegations, forced his transfer to UNLV.

After four years in Cleveland - in which he started every year - the Detroit Lions signed him to a one-year free agent contract and he is expected to step immediately in a starting role.

In a sense, Wright is trying to rebound again. He was considered a solid up-and-comer with the Browns, returning an interception 94 yards for a touchdown three years ago. Two years ago, he had a career high four interceptions.

Last year was supposed to be "the'' year. It was the final year of his contract and he was looking for the big day, but it never came. He struggled at points throughout the season and finished with his one interception and then suffered a knee injury late in the year.

Despite those troubles, the Browns wanted to hang on to him - although he might have had to accept a backup role.

If Wright can bounce back from his troubled season last year, the Lions will have cashed in with this free agent pickup. If he doesn't, the Lions' search for cornerbacks will continue.

fwiw from stampede blue

Between now and the start of free agency, Stampede Blue will profile free agents the Indianapolis Colts could and should target when the new collective bargaining agreement is signed and the lockout lifted.

Free Agent Target: Cliff Avril, DE, Detroit Lions

Dwight Freeney is 31-years-old. Robert Mathis is 30. Jerry Hughes was a colossal disappointment last year as a rookie, and already people are starting to make excuses for why he could suck even more in 2011. I won't go so far as to say we fans need to be freaking out about the current state of the Indianapolis Colts' pass rush, but we should definitely be concerned.

The Colts define a successful season by winning a Super Bowl. Anything less is failure. After Freeney and Mathis, the Colts simply have no pass rush. Without a pass rush in the NFL, your team will be lucky to make the playoffs. Thus, it is imperative that the Colts do everything possible not just to ensure that the pass rush remain consistent, but to also enhance the rush with as many potent players as possible.

In April 2008, I was convinced that the Colts were going to draft Cliff Avril out of Purdue in the third round of the draft that year. The Detroit Lions seemed convinced as well, which was likely why they swung a trade with theDallas Cowboys moments before the selection was to be turned in. Detroit took Avril with the 93rd pick. It's one of the few smart moves then-Lions G.M. Matt Millen ever made.

The Colts picked 94th, and used it to take Philip Wheeler. Excuse me. I vomited in my mouth a little bit thinking about how we could have drafted Avril over Wheeler.

Since being drafted, Avril has 19 sacks in 28 career starts. He's the best pass rusher from his draft class, which included Phillip Merling, Quentin Groves, and Derrick Harvey (who were all first day picks). When evaluating edge rushers from 2010, Pro Football Focus Avril was ranked 14th overall. Prior to the lockout, the Lionsplaced a 1st and 3rd round tender on Avril, the highest tender possible for a player not franchise tagged. If reports about the new proposed CBA are accurate, that tender will be meaningless when free agency starts.

This means Avril will be free to sign with any team, and the Lions will not be owed any compensation.

Now, the logical question here is how can the Colts afford to sign someone like Avril and keep Freeney, Mathis, and Hughes long-term? The simple answer is Mathis is a goner when his contract is up at the end of the 2011 season. He knows this, which is why he held out from OTAs and mandatory mini-camp last year wanting a new deal.

Also, the Colts drafted Jerry Hughes, in part, to replace the nine-year veteran from Alabama A&M.

Since it isn't all that clear that Hughes will even be a passable defensive player, let alone an elite one like Mathis, the Colts should not bank on him developing. Instead, target the 25-year-old Avril, who had 8.5 sacks and 33 tackles last season playing on the opposite side of Detroit's d-line with an ancient <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/2894/kyle-vanden-bosch" class="sbn-auto-link" style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-color: initial; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; color: rgb(22, 63, 131); text-decoration: none; font-weight: bold; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; ">Kyle Vanden Bosch. Avril's numbers with Freeney on the other side would rival Mathis.

Should Mathis have an issue with the Colts bringing in Avril, or if the numbers don't add up financially, the simple answer to the problem is to cut Robert. He's in the final year of his deal, and the Colts pass rush would be just as effective with Freeney and Avril; maybe even better. Avril is also five years younger than Mathis, and has the same build (6'3, 260 pounds).

Ideally, if the team could trot out Freeney, Mathis, Avril, and a semi-passable Hughes, the Colts would be a potent pass-rushing force in the AFC. That type of rush would rival the New York Giants circa 2007, and rush was what propelled them to a Super Bowl win that year. Had the Colts been able to generate any kind of rush in Super Bowl XLIV, we wouldn't have been subjected to all those annoying 'Go Saints!' commercials for the NFL Shop last year.

Last season, the Colts defense was in the bottom half of the league with just 30 sacks. If they were to increase that number to 40, that would mean fewer third down conversions for the opponent... meaning more snaps forPeyton Manning and the Colts offense... meaning probably two or three more 'W's in the win column.

I sure hope so, I hope we get him.
Looks like despite the smoke yesterday, that the Eagles are no longer pursuing Tulloch?

9:57 a.m. – Looking for LBs?

Looks like we can erase Nick Barnett and Steve Tulloch, the two highest-rated inside linebackers on free agent market, from the Eagles’ shopping list.

A league source familiar with the Eagles’ thinking said Friday morning the team is not negotiating with the agent for Tulloch and has had only minimal contact with the agent for Barnett.

The source said the Eagles are not interested in Tulloch and although they have modest interest in Barnett, it’s unlikely they’ll make him an offer, either.

Right now, with Stewart Bradley unrestricted, the Eagles are going with three young linebackers with their first-team defense at training camp -- 22-year-old rookie Casey Matthews in the middle, 25-year-old Moise Fokou on the weak side and 24-year-old second-year pro Jamar Chaney on the strong side.

Tulloch, 26, spent his first five seasons with the Titans. He became a starter in 2008 and is considered an outstanding run stopper. The Lions appear to be the frontrunner to sign the 5-foot-11, 230-pound Tulloch.

After trying unsuccessfully to trade him, the Packers released Barnett on Thursday. The 30-year-old Barnett has been hurt much of the last three years but was an all-pro in 2007 has started 107 games since the Packers drafted him out of Oregon State in the first round in 2003.

As of now, the oldest linebacker the Eagles have under contract is 28-year-old Rashad Jeanty, who has played 53 games, starting 32, all with the Bengals from 2006 through 2009.

The Eagles also have second-year pro Keenan Clayton (24) and rookie draft picks Greg Lloyd Brian Rolle (both 22) under contract. They also added undrafted rookie Brandon Peguese (23) earlier this week.

Bradley, Omar Gaither and Akeem Jordan, who were all starters at some point as recently as last year, are all unrestricted, and the Eagles appear to be in no hurry to re-sign any of them.

Justin Durant Already Planning To Recruit Stephen Tulloch To Lions?

When I first heard that linebacker Justin Durant had agreed to a deal with the Detroit Lions, I figured that meant they weren't going to sign Stephen Tulloch. While the Lions do have more than one starting spot open at linebacker, it just didn't seem likely that Durant and Tulloch could both be signed. As it stands right now, it doesn't appear that the Durant deal has taken Tulloch's presumed offer off the table. In fact, Durant said this on Twitter:

At this point it's tough to tell what the Lions' plans are, but with three different players working the case, it sure seems like they still want Tulloch to join the team.

Stephen Tulloch Says 'Everything Will Unfold Soon'

Just a couple days ago it looked like the Detroit Lions were on the verge of landing linebacker Stephen Tulloch. There were multiple reports about offers being made and the Lions making a move to get him, and Tulloch even tweeted about decisions needing to be made.Since then all has been pretty quiet on the Tulloch front. The Lions agreed to a deal with another linebacker,Justin Durant, and there hasn't been any real news about Tulloch. As it stands right now he hasn't made a decision about where he will play next season, although he did tweet something on Thursday night that indicates we may find out soon.

Trust me fans I see your tweets and appreciate the love you have been giving me. Everything will unfold soon. I promise....less than a minute ago via Echofon http://si0.twimg.com/images/dev/cms/intents/icons/favorite.pnghttp://twitter.com/intent/favorite?tweet_id=96771992308547584' alt='a>'> Favorite http://si0.twimg.com/images/dev/cms/intents/icons/retweet.png' alt='a>'> Retweet http://si0.twimg.com/images/dev/cms/intents/icons/reply.png' alt='a>'> Replyhttp://a0.twimg.com/profile_images/1437397761/2011_Football_Camp_4_normal.jpghttp://twitter.com/stephentulloch' alt='a>'>Stephen Tulloch<br style="line-height: 0.75em; ">stephentulloch

<br style="line-height: 0.75em; ">Hopefully things will unfold with him agreeing to a deal with the Lions. While the addition of Durant and cornerback Eric Wright are nice improvements for the defense, adding Tulloch as well would really be nice. Suddenly the linebacker position would go from being a big need to a possible strength, and the Lions' defense would really be starting to shape up quite nicely. With the defensive line already stacked and cornerback getting a bit better, throwing Tulloch into the mix would go a long way toward making the Lions' defense a force to be reckoned with.

Oh and in b4 the #####ing about the cde. It's not my fault this sight restricts images. blame them. i'm just cutting and pasting. too much action in this whirlwind to edit.

from the comments on tulloch piece

I have been following his tweets for the past two days

seems to me that 95% of the tweets he got were from Lions fans. So I hope the "love" Stephen is talking about is the love from Detroit.

I know, the POD Army took over his page !!

Believe it or not, I think that helps. I know if I am a player and torn between 2 teams…..95% of fans saying come play here…..To me any player wants a few things, to be payed well, win ( especially the SB ) and have the fans give him great memories of his career. Support from the fans is huge, that in itself makes you feel like being part of something special.

I've tweeted him like 5 times... We should flood him with more Detroit love today!!

Drew Rosenhaus is an NFL agent. In other words, his job is to promote his players. He took an interesting route concerning one of his clients, Stephen Tulloch.

Rosenhaus tweeted the following:

The Detroit Lions have never offered Stephen Tulloch a $10 million signing bonus or contract worth $6 million per year.

Anyone that knows anything about Drew Rosenhaus has to immediately figure he’s playing games, not providing information. It is important to note that Rosenhaus doesn’t say the Lions didn’t make a strong offer. He could be completely truthful even if the Lions have offered a $9.5 million signing bonus on a $5.8 million annual salary. Or he could be straight up lying.

I wouldn’t doubt that Rosenhaus threw this out there to stir up a little trouble or just some regular talk about his client. After all, the Tulloch talk has seemed to quieted down over the last day or so. His tweet that immediately preceded the one in question here says the following:

Jared Gaither has not agreed to contract terms with the Raiders.

Other sources on twitter indicate that an agreement is imminent. Rosenhaus may not have been lying, but he wasn’t fully representing the situation in an accurate manner.Hang on, this is all part of the roller coaster ride.

The delay to the start of free agency caused by the lockout made for a lot of time to speculate about who the Detroit Lions could target once player movement started. The problem is that it only allowed for consideration to be given to players with expired contracts.

The implementation of rules for the next league year means teams are now free to cut players that no longer fit in their plans or budget releasing another group of players to the free agent market. One name has already drawn some attention as far as the Detroit Lions are concerned.

The Green Bay Packers informed inside linebacker Nick Barnett that he will not return to the team for the 2011 season. They will first try to trade Barnett although his contract may make that prohibitive. Nick Barnett will be released if no trade partner can be found. It is then that the Lions could step in.

I first saw the Barnett to the Lions connection pop up on a Pro Football Focus article by Sam Monson that lists five possible landing spots for Barnett. They give a “why” and “why not” explanation for each team. Here is what Monson had to say about the situation with the Lions:

Why it will happen

The Lions have some holes at linebacker, and they need to fill them if defensive front is going to be much use at all. Barnett is an experienced MLB who would allow them to move settle on a position for DeAndre Levy by default. There’s also nothing quite like getting better by robbing your divisional rivals, and Barnett would get two chances a season to show the Packers they really should have kept him over AJ Hawk.

Why it won’t

The Lions might have better places to spend the money and potentially cheaper targets for their linebacker role (Keith Bullock is a name that comes up). He was shown the door because of dollars and it might be dollars that keeps him away from Detroit.

Word is starting to spread about Barnett in the local media as well. Tom Kowalski received a phone call just as the Sean, Terp and Killer show went on the air at 3 p.m. The talk quickly shifted to Barnett upon Kowalski’s return to the microphone. Killer gets a lot of questions about whether or not a particular player is a fit, it appears in this case the answer is “yes”:
Because of the hefty contract, Packers probably can’t trade Nick Barnett … could be great fit in Detroit … Hmmmmm

Whether or not Barnett turns in to a real option remains to be seen but it goes to show that the Lions search will be wider than first thought. The Mayew regime has rarely given us what we expect, don’t be surprised when it happens again.Like what you see? Detroit Lions Sign Quinn Pitcock, 3 Others

In addition to announcing that they have re-signed a number of their players from last season, the Detroit Lions have also announced the signing of four free agents: wide receiver Rashied Davis, defensive tackle Quinn Pitcock, linebacker Justin Durant and cornerback Maurice Leggett.

There are two things worth noting about this list of signings. The first is that Pitcock is on it. He played for the Indianapolis Colts in 2007 and retired after only one year in the league because of depression and video game addiction. He started his comeback attempt last year and is now hoping to make it back with the Lions.

The second notable thing about the list is that cornerback Eric Wright isn't on it. He has not officially signed with the Lions yet, but he is scheduled to come to town on Friday night. My guess is he will sign on Saturday and officially join the Lions then.

In case you missed it, check out the other Lions free agents StoryStream for a list of their re-signings.

Fans have vocally expressed their displeasure in the past about Green Bay Packers players moving on to play for the Chicago Bears or Minnesota Vikings, but how does the commentariat feel about a potential move to theDetroit Lions for inside linebacker Nick Barnett? According to Tom Kowalski of MLive.com, one of the best journalists covering the Lions, the team is interested in Barnett.

According to a source close to the negotiations, the #LIONS are talking to Nick Barnett and trying to sign him to a free agent contract

Depending on the contract, Barnett could be a great signing for the Lions, who have missed out on some other free agent targets at the linebacker position. I wouldn't hold any grudge against Barnett if he made a move to Detroit. How about you guys? Are you disappointed or concerned that we're not actively trying to re-sign him after cutting Brandon Chillar?

When word came out earlier this week that the Green Bay Packers were planning to release linebacker Nick Barnett, Nate Burleson asked him if he had already booked a flight to Detroit. Barnett responded by telling Burleson to send him Martin Mayhew's number, indicating he wouldn't mind playing for the Detroit Lions.

Yesterday a couple reports came out suggesting the Lions will go after Barnett once he is released, and just a few minutes ago Tom Kowalski tweeted this:

Literally seconds before Kowalski tweeted that, Barnett said this on Twitter: "Ok not going to lie the bolts fans and lions go hard on twitter!!! I see a couple eagle fans and Tampa but overwhelmed by Detroit and SD." (Well done, Lions fans who are busy recruiting players on Twitter.) Barnett also tweeted something similar to whatStephen Tulloch had to say earlier this week: "Things are starting to move.... Decisions decisions decisions."According to a source close to the negotiations, the #LIONS are talking to Nick Barnett and trying to sign him to a free agent contract

I don't believe an announcement has been made by the Packers about Barnett being released, but based on all of the tweets I just mentioned, I'm guessing he is currently a free agent (if not, say hello to more tampering charges) and that a decision on where he will sign could be nearing.

n a press release sent out Friday night, the Detroit Lions announced that they have re-signed many of their unrestricted, restricted and exclusive-rights free agents. Some of these moves were already known about before Friday, but others were kept under wraps until now.

Below is a list of the players that have been re-signed.

[*]Lions unrestricted free agents: QB Drew Stanton, OG/C Dylan Gandy, S John Wendling, K Dave Rayner

[*]Restricted free agents: FB Jerome Felton, DT Andre Fluellen

[*]Exclusive-rights free agents: WR Stefan Logan, OT Corey Hilliard, LB Ashlee Palmer,LB Korey Bosworth, LB Caleb Campbell, CB Prince Miller, CB Paul Pratt, S Randy Phillips

The Lions also confirmed that wide receiver Bryant Johnson and linebacker Jordon Dizonhave been released. Those moves leaked out earlier in the week and came as no surprise since the Lions were able to shed some salary and create some cap space by getting rid of them.

In addition to these moves, the Lions confirmed the signings of some free agents from other teams. You can check out those moves in another StoryStream.

Interesting that most players are saying that they are actually being influenced by fans begging them to come on twitter. I wonder if this actually has any impact? I've seen it rferenced many times by many players over the last few days. #thingsthatmakeyougohmmmmm

I was scratching my head. WTH is quinn pittcock?

googled and :lmao:

http://www.macsfootb...d-pitcocks.htmlhttp://www.macsfootballblog.com/2010/08/depression-video-games-behind-pitcocks.html

Depression, Video Games Behind Pitcock's Retirement

After his first practice with the Seattle Seahawks, defensive tackle Quinn Pitcock disclosed the reasons for his retirement after just one season with the Indianapolis Colts: Depression and video games.

From Eric Williams of the Tacoma News Tribune:

"We got to talk to Pitcock afterward, and he was frank in discussing his reasons for retiring from the league in 2008 while with Indianapolis at the age of 24, saying he was suffering from bouts of depression, and that he had used video games as an outlet.

Pitcock said his video game playing eventually became an addiction that he needed help with, along with the depression. Pitcock said he still lived in Indianapolis after he stepped away from the game."

"I didn't think I was good enough mentally for the team," Pitcock said on Thursday, "So I thought it was best for the team and myself at the time that I left because I didn't think I was mentally ready for the game."I'm having a fun time out here today and the guys are very welcoming," Pitcock said. "I think some guys don't know my story, they just thought I got released by Indy. And that's fine. I'm not trying to make it a big deal. I left quietly and I'd like to come in quietly and just show what I can accomplish with the team."

Veteran wide receiver Mike Hass was released to make room for Pitcock on the 80-man roster.

The Detroit Lions held their first practice of training camp this morning. Below is a rundown of news from the practice.

[*]Today's practice was forced to move indoors because of the bad weather that rolled through Michigan last night. As a result, season ticket holders were unable to attend, so they will be invited to another practice at a later date.

[*]The practice was "crisp" despite it being the first one of training camp.

[*]Alphonso Smith's foot injury happened three weeks ago during a workout. Although he is currently on the PUP list because of the injury,he expects to be good to go for the start of the regular season.

[*]Amari Spievey started at safety alongside Louis Delmas during today's practice, and Jason Fox was starting in place of the injured Jeff Backus at left tackle. Other personnel things worth noting (via Tom Kowalski): Johnny Culbreath was the second-string OT; Lawrence Jackson was starting in place of the unsigned Cliff Avril; Zack Follett and Isaiah Ekejiuba started at outside linebacker; and the starting cornerbacks were Aaron Berry and Nathan Vasher.

Speaking of Berry, Jim Schwartz said he "looked outstanding." I think he will be a player to watch during training camp.<br style="line-height: 0.75em; "> Jason Hanson practiced very well and showed no signs of last year's injury.

[*]Calvin Johnson said despite it being the first practice, Matthew Stafford is already testing him. By the sounds of it, the two are already showing off their on-field connection.

[*]Mikel Leshoure said the first practice was a "little tough" for him because he had to take his conditioning test right before it, but he added that it will get easier from here.

[*]Schwartz apparently said the playbook for the defensive line is about half a page long and only has two words: "kick butt."

[*]Schwartz also joked that with how busy Ndamukong Suh's offseason was, there were more sightings of Suh than big foot.

[*]The Lions' official site has audio from Stafford, Schwartz, Suh and Fairley.

[*]Dave Birkett reports that there are nameplates in the Lions locker room for Bobby Carpenter and Turk McBride, and there is also one for somebody named Pitcock (possibly Quinn Pitcock). Perhaps that's an indication that they will be signed soon.

The Detroit Lions have agreed to terms with another of their free agents, re-signing backup center Dylan Gandy to a two-year deal.

Gandy is not taking part in the Lions’ first training-camp practice today but is eligible to sign after 6 p.m. and take part in team meetings before his contract becomes official Aug. 4.

The Lions agreed to terms with cornerback Eric Wright on a one-year deal overnight, and already have agreed to bring several more of their own free agents, including quarterback Drew Stanton, kicker Dave Rayner, cornerback Brandon McDonald and safety John Wendling.

Further terms of Gandy's deal were not disclosed.

Jeff Backus has never missed a game in his 10-year career, and he doesn’t plan to start now.

Backus did not take part in the Detroit Lions’ first training camp practice Friday, suffering from a partially torn left pectoral. But he said he hopes to be on the field for the Sept. 11 season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“We’re all confident,” Backus said. “I’m confident, the doctors that I’m seeing are confident. It’s just, we’ve got to be smart about it, make sure that I give it enough time to heal so it’s not something that I have to deal with throughout the season. So we’re going to be patient now. We have a plan, and we’re just going to focus on each day.

"I think that you guys know me: I’ll be out there as soon as I can.”

Backus injured himself working out this spring, but he declined to give exact details of the injury today.

“You know (head coach Jim) Schwartz’s policy: We don’t talk about injuries, we don’t talk about the details,” Backus said. “Plus, it doesn’t really matter. What matters right now is me getting healthy and preparing for the season and getting out there as soon as I can.”

Backus has started 160 straight games at left tackle since the Lions took him in the first round in 2001.

Jason Fox, a fourth-round pick a year ago, took first-team reps at left tackle today, with rookie Johnny Culbreath serving as his backup.

“Have I had injuries (before)? Yes. Have I torn a muscle before? No," Backus said. "But like I said, I’m very confident in the people I’ve talked to and what we’re doing here, and I’m going to bust my butt every day to do what I can to get myself better and get on the field as soon as I can."

Note: The Lions tonight announced the signing of defensive tackle Quinn Pitcock, who retired from the Indianapolis Colts in 2008 after one season. He played in college for Ohio State.

I'm kinda... ho hum on their signings so far. Maybe it's because of no big names really and there have been several that would have fit major holes.

Still don't know why they weren't/haven't been major players in the Nnamdi, Chromartie, or Joseph sweepstakes. Eric Wright? Eh, he's ok, I suppose.

Better than what we had. But nothing spectacular.

I think it all hinges on Tulloch. Get him, and the dominoes continue to fall. I would really like to see us go for one of the available top WRs. Still

not sold on Burleson. Heck, why not take a flyer on Randy Moss?!

Wonder what the price tag is on Plexico Burress or TO?

The Lions don't have the cap room to spend $10 million per year on anyone.

Barnett or Tulloch...one of those is a must for the Lions. I lean towards Barnett. The Lions also need to pick up some upgrade at OL and resign Houston. If they do that, they will have a good chance at 9 or 10 wins.

They can make room, renegotiate contracts, cut crappy players, which there are a ton...tons of ways to make things work. PLus its a soft cap, so there is room to do things if your spending. The Lions I'm learning never do well in FA.

Yes they need one of them so bad, very bad...and if they do not get one, I will be upset at the team yet again. There is no possible way what so ever, none, zero, zilch, nada, that they get to 9 wins with a back 7 that is as pathetic as the worst peewee football teams. To not be out there trying to get a good corner after you pass up on Prince A in the draft for Fairley shows exactly why the Lions are as pathetic as any team in the NFL....and why they are the only team that has had an 0-16 record.Lions fans may get on me, heck I am one, but the facts dont change. Stop being homers and realize the Lions totally failed in this free agency period by not spending for Joseph. If they don't get Tulloch or Barnett, ugh, that LB core sux something awful. Teams wont need to run because they will throw for 300 yards plus a game...like I said, Suh can not play corner too.

Yes they need one of them so bad, very bad...and if they do not get one, I will be upset at the team yet again. There is no possible way what so ever, none, zero, zilch, nada, that they get to 9 wins with a back 7 that is as pathetic as the worst peewee football teams. To not be out there trying to get a good corner after you pass up on Prince A in the draft for Fairley shows exactly why the Lions are as pathetic as any team in the NFL....and why they are the only team that has had an 0-16 record.

Lions fans may get on me, heck I am one, but the facts dont change.
Secretly, I have been hoping the Lions don't sign Tulloch or Barnett. My dream situation is drafting
next year to play MLB. Suh, Fairley, and Burfict in the middle would be so nasty. That being said, the o-line needs an overhaul next year. Raiola and Backus are very close to the end.

My prediction right now, Eric Wright will prove to have been a real steal. Eric Wright signed a one-year contract for a reason, he knows he is healthy now and he has something to prove. Despite reports saying Cleveland did not want him, Cleveland offered Wright more money than Detroit and a multi-year contract. There were a dozen teams interested in him. He came to Detroit because he knew he could start and he wanted to get away from the negativity he received last year in Cleveland.
