DET: LIONS SNAG TULLOCH!(LB) Durant(LB) Houston(DB)Leggett(S) (1 Viewer)

My prediction right now, Eric Wright will prove to have been a real steal. Eric Wright signed a one-year contract for a reason, he knows he is healthy now and he has something to prove. Despite reports saying Cleveland did not want him, Cleveland offered Wright more money than Detroit and a multi-year contract. There were a dozen teams interested in him. He came to Detroit because he knew he could start and he wanted to get away from the negativity he received last year in Cleveland.
I hope so, as a fan.As a realist, a Browns corner is not the answer to our horrid secondary. Wright had talent coming out of college, but he is a bust, he just is. He gets burned wayyyyyyyyyyyyy to much. Its not about picks or tackles, its about not getting burned, and the Lions already has enough players who get burned, why add another?

Barnett or Tulloch...one of those is a must for the Lions. I lean towards Barnett. The Lions also need to pick up some upgrade at OL and resign Houston. If they do that, they will have a good chance at 9 or 10 wins.
Yes they need one of them so bad, very bad...and if they do not get one, I will be upset at the team yet again. There is no possible way what so ever, none, zero, zilch, nada, that they get to 9 wins with a back 7 that is as pathetic as the worst peewee football teams. To not be out there trying to get a good corner after you pass up on Prince A in the draft for Fairley shows exactly why the Lions are as pathetic as any team in the NFL....and why they are the only team that has had an 0-16 record.

Lions fans may get on me, heck I am one, but the facts dont change. Stop being homers and realize the Lions totally failed in this free agency period by not spending for Joseph. If they don't get Tulloch or Barnett, ugh, that LB core sux something awful. Teams wont need to run because they will throw for 300 yards plus a game...like I said, Suh can not play corner too.
Secretly, I have been hoping the Lions don't sign Tulloch or Barnett. My dream situation is drafting
Burfict is a beast, but why talk about next year? If we got a good LB in this FA, we could be talking about this year. Thats my point. I'm sick of horrible seasons, and waiting for the draft.

Free agent linebacker Nick Barnett has tweeted a few interesting things in the last hour. First he said that today was going to be a long day, but it "should be fun." Not too long after he said, "Long day just turned into long weekend but very exciting." Barnett followed it up with this tweet, which could indicate he is headed to theDetroit Lions:

#whatupdoeless than a minute ago NickBarnett

In case you're wondering, "what up doe" is considered Detroit slang for "what's up" or "how are you." Lions wide receiver Nate Burleson actually got fined last year for lifting up his jersey to show he was wearing a shirt with "What up doe" written on it. Burleson has been talking to Barnett on Twitter this week, so I'm sure the tweet above is no coincidence.

Obviously this is only speculation right now, but based on connecting the dots of Barnett's tweets, I think he has decided to play for the Lions.

Barnett tweeted the same thing 3 days ago. Jahvid Best responded with, "lets get it in bra!' Not sure what it means or how significant is or isn't.

Sounds like they are into cross dressing. NTTATWWT.

After the team's first practice on Friday, Detroit Lions defensive back Aaron Berry has stood-out among a stable of cornerbacks that writer Mike Mady says is better than what they're being credited for.

The Detroit Lions took the field on Friday. Finally.

Not in recent memory has a Lions squad generated such a buzz – both locally and nationally. For once, eyes are on the Lions. Their potential has persuaded typically avoiding eyes to glance. It is now that the real work begins as the Lions try to prove that they are more than just high-draft picks and potential.

Still, the team faces many questions as they attempt to make the transition from up-and-coming to arrived-and-contending.

Let’s take a look at one of Detroit’s biggest areas of concern – cornerback.

Since the end of the offseason, the media and fans were quick to question Detroit’s back-seven, particularly the cornerbacks. Nnamdi Asomugha was on top of the free-agent rankings as well as fan wish lists. With Asomugha signing a monster deal with the Philadelphia Eagles, that pipe dream goes down the drain. However, Asomugha’s daunting price tag was not the only reason the Lions’ interest was moderate at best; they have talent at cornerback.

Nathan Vasher is an often-forgotten name when mentioning the Lions’ secondary. Vasher is an experienced cornerback who enjoyed success early in his career, playing for the Chicago Bears. Vasher led the NFC in interceptions (8) in 2005 (his sophomore season) and was a starting cornerback in 2006, when the Bears made it to the Super Bowl (starting all three playoff games, including Super Bowl 41). Vasher struggled with a groin injury in 2007 and wasn’t able to find his stride the next few seasons. Now, playing behind one of the league’s most feared defensive lines, Vasher enters the season attempting to regain his early-career form. Word is, he looked solid in the team’s first day of training camp, drawing the intimidating task of cover Calvin Johnson on numerous occasions.

Aaron Barry joined the Lions in 2010 as an undrafted free agent with little expectations. He impressed in training camp and earned the starting nickel cornerback job during the Lions’ Week one contest against the Chicago Bears. In that game, Barry recorded three tackles and an interception before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury. Finally healthy, Barry trained with Jets’ cornerback Darelle Revis during the offseason and reportedly looked good in today’s practice as tweeted by reporter Chris McCosky (@cmccosky): “CB Aaron Berry also stood out. He's fast and smooth, changes directions fluidly. Looks bigger, too. Started at nickel last yr before injury.”

Said coach Jim Schwartz, "I thought Aaron Berry looked outstanding today; very, very quick and he’s a lot stronger than he was last year. He fell into that undrafted category last year where he didn’t know what to expect; he never really lifted before; he was skinny, he was quick and he could make a play but it was a lot different today."

Alphonso Smith is one of the most exciting prospects at the position. Smith is entering training camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list with a broken foot, but he offers intrigue due to high-end potential. Originally the 37th-overall selection of the Denver Broncos in 2009, the Wake Forest alum was traded to the Lions after only one season with the Broncos. Appearing in 12 games for the Lions (10 starts) Smith led the team with five interceptions – returning one for a touchdown. He also got burned while gambling at times and needs to learn to play within the defensive system.

Still, Smith is only entering his third professional season and could develop into a strong player in Detroit’s secondary.

The Lions also added former Brown Eric Wright via free agency. Drafted by Cleveland in 2007 at 53rd overall, Wright has started 55 games in his NFL career and brings high-end skill to Detroit’s secondary. Wright figures to win one of the starting jobs. With the signing not officially announced (perhaps pending a physical) Wright is expected to arrive to camp on Monday.

Also, don’t forget that Detroit may yet retain the services of Chris Houston, their No. 1 cornerback from a year ago. Houston is a reliable veteran who currently is a free agent. If Houston returns, the Lions have a solid mix of experience and youth at cornerback.

The Lions secondary isn’t bursting with high-priced Pro-Bowlers but they quietly have assembled a group that has more potential than they are credited for. If the front four has the success that is expected of them, the secondary has the skill, experience and potential to succeed.

After acquiring Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and signing Nnamdi Asomugha, the Philadelphia Eagles are overflowing with talent at cornerback. As soon as the Asomugha deal became official, Asante Samuel seemingly became the odd man out and the next player the Eagles could deal in a trade.

It's entirely possible Samuel won't be dealt anywhere, especially considering the Eagles reportedly have claimed all three corners will be kept on the roster, but NFL Network's Michael Lombardi reports that Samuel is considered to be on the trade block. Lombardi says the Eagles "should get some serious action" for him considering he is a good player and is only scheduled to make $5.9 million in 2011.

Samuel would apparently like to stay in Philadelphia to play with Rodgers-Cromartie and Asomugha, but if a good enough offer comes their way, the Eagles very well could deal him.

But the Eagles have said they're keeping all three, although a league source with knowledge of the team's thinking said a "great" trade offer could change the game plan.

Giving up a bunch of talent and/or high draft picks is not what the Detroit Lions have done under Martin Mayhew to improve their team. They like to trade low picks for players that were undervalued by their previous team. Just look at the deals to acquire Chris Houston, Rob Sims, Corey Williams, etc. You obviously never say never considering Samuel is very talented, but I would be surprised if the Lions made a move to acquire him.

I've been on here all off season trying to tell people that the best CB on the Lions was out all last year. They LOVED this kid last year before he got hurt. Don't sleep on Jack Williams either. Hell, I thought down the stretch last year, Vasher looked pretty darn good too. Spievey showed a lot of growth and potential for a guy who had never played safety in his life either. This secondary is better than it has been given credit for. Also, don't forget that the pass rush is the best friend to the secondary:In 2009, Wright's career year, the Cleveland Browns were 8th in the NFL in sacks (w/40.0).

In 2010, Wright's worst season, Cleveland was tied for 25th in the NFL with (w/29.0).

In 2009, Chris Houston's worst season, the Atlanta Falcons were tied for 26th in sacks with three teams (w/26.0)

In 2010, Houston's best season, the Detroit Lions were 6th in the NFL (w/44.0)

No offense man, but you really don't sound like you know what you are talking about. You seem to think we are still in the Millen era. Nearly every move this regime has pulled off has ended up as a good one. What makes you think you know more than they do? They picked up Chris Houston, Lawrence Jackson, Alphonso Smith, etc. off the scrap heap and they were valuable contributors to the team last season. Who's to say these signings won't also be good ones? And passing up Prince A for Fairley proves their incompetence? Fairley was one of the 2 or 3 best football players in this entire draft. What makes you certain that was the wrong move?

As far as I'm concerned, Fairley was the steal of the entire draft.

I've heard the report ... Nick Barnett is visiting Lions but is expected to visit other teams as well ... we'll see
Just read IND released CB Kelvin Hayden, who should be the top CB out there now. Anyway we have enough cap room to sign Barnett AND Hayden?
Seriously - Hayden would be just what the Lions need in a CB in terms of talent, cap space, but especially leadership.

Free-agent linebacker Nick Barnett is scheduled to visit the Detroit Lions on Sunday.

A mainstay on the Green Bay Packers defense for the last eight years, Barnett was released earlier this week.

The Lions already have signed one free-agent linebacker, adding Justin Durant from Jacksonville, but they have another starting spot available, likely on the outside. DeAndre Levy has been practicing at middle linebacker during the first two days of training camp, and Durant will play the right outside position.

So far, the Lions and Barnett have had just general conversations, though the two sides are expected to talk later tonight. Barnett also is considering the Chicago Bears, among other teams.

Barnett, 30, played just four games last year because of a wrist injury and finished the 2008 season on injured reserve with a right knee injury. He can play any linebacker position.

Lions coach Jim Schwartz declined to address the team’s interest in Barnett during his post-practice media session today.

“I think I’ll stay away from just individual names and commenting on every single guy and stuff like that and just leave it at we’re still exploring every guy that’s available and trying to find talents that match what we’re looking for,” Schwartz said. “We’re open to a lot of different scenarios and we’re just going to try and stay patient and do that.”

Offensive lineman Tony Ugoh missed his second straight practice today, and agent Alan Herman said Ugoh is unavailable to practice until Aug. 4 after agreeing to modify his contract.

Ugoh, who signed with the Lions late last season, was scheduled to make $1.5 million this year. His new deal also is a one-year contract.

Receiver Titus Young also sat out practice with muscle tightness.

According to the locals, Barnett was in Buffalo and left without s contract. He is supposed to talk to the Lions today.

My gut says the Lions will sign him.

More to come.

If they get a good corner, someone like Hayden, I will have no problem admitting I was a little early in the ripping I gave them.

Suh, Fairly, Vanden Bosch, Tulloch, Durant...and maybe Barnett? Wow, I like to see someone who knows football say that is not an instant playoff caliber upgrade. It shows how bad that backing core realing was if they sign all three news LBs.

Lions have signed LB Stephen Tulloch, according to league source.

BAM!!!! Finally, a great great move.
http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/3936/stephen-tulloch

This is great news....Levy, Tulloch, Durant nice. Don't underestimate the secondary. Look back at what Schwartz had in Tenn. You can call them cast offs but sometimes all it takes is a change of scenery, and playing in a defense that gets pressure.

Report: Detroit Lions Score Stephen Tulloch

July 31st, 2011 at 9:27 AM

By Chris BurkeThe Detroit Lions made it no secret that they wanted Stephen Tulloch to come in and anchor their linebacking corps next season. That dream appears to have become reality.

Sean Jensen of the Chicago Sun-Times tweeted Sunday morning that the Lions have signed Tulloch, the NFL's second-leading tackler last season with 160. The team has not yet confirmed and no financial details were reported.

The Tulloch signing is huge for the Lions. they were terrible in run defense last year and Tulloch is a prototype run stuffing MLB. The Lions allowed opponents a 4.5 ypc average and that really hurt the pass defense because teams had a lot of third and short or reasonable. I think that average drops significantly now, which by itself improves the pass defense, especially on 3rd down.

I also would guess that the Lions signed him to a reasonable deal. Tulloch's market dried up fast.

:goodposting:Even when we disregard Prince's lack of hip flexibility and explosion that made it easy for 17 other teams besides the Lions pass on him.Tulloch has got to leap to the front of the IDP rankings, going to rack up a ton of tackles behind that DT wall playing in the middle of that 4-3.Barnett seems inclined to hang around the NFC North, maybe so he can stick it to the Pack twice a year? I wonder if that's good enough for a discount?

I can't imagine Barnett still coming here.

I agree Fairley will end up being a steal, but the Leos have to get a good corner in order to not justify taking Prince with that pick.

Anyone hear the terms of Tullochs deal? Years more importantly.
Tulloch for $3.25m this season is a steal if he is anywhere near his 2010 form.
This almost has to be a *wink wink, we'll work out a long term deal/restructure a few things kind of move otherwise you have to think he could have still gotten more elsewehere. All those idiots a few years back who were ragging on schwartz this team during the 0-16 year can eat a ####. Though they'll likely be riding the Lion bandwagon this year. how about that? The Lions are gonna have bandwagon fans! :pickle:

team needs remain with CB, OL, and S

Safety Spivey should be ok, I think he will be better with better players in the LB core picking up the underneath slack.

Wright is not the answer, I stand by that, get hayden or Cromartie right? Cap room still friendly with only 3.25 landing in Tullochs pockets.

...and at OLine, this will be what the Lions build on next year in the draft I assume, so do they get some crafty vets for this year?

I agree Fairley will end up being a steal, but the Leos have to get a good corner in order to not justify taking Prince with that pick.
Guess we'll have to see if Prince turns into a quality NFL corner before making that call. Put me on the minority side of the fence that's glad we didn't draft him.

No I agree, Prince may not be a stud, but he has potential to be better then any scrub corner we have....Fairley, i like him, i really do. But he can not play corner. lol

The Lions are not going to make any major changes to the offensive line this year. I think it will be a priority next year due to the age of Backus and Raiola. People forget that the Lions were 6th best in the league in fewest sacks allowed. The run blocking was not good for most of the year, but it really picked up at the end of the year. While the line is not great, it is certainly not as bad as some people think. Safety is also not going to be addressed in a major way. The Lions signed Erik Coleman and he is serviceable enough for now. Spievey could start depending on how fast he adjusts. He never played safety until last year and the loss of OTAs hurts his development. My gut says Coleman starts. He is not great, but he is adequate enough for now. I think you are really underestimating Wright. While it's true he struggled last year, let's not forget that he had 3 very good years prior to that. Also, as someone else posted, the Browns had no pass rush at all last year and that certainly doesn't help a corner. I am glad the Lions passed on Prince Amakamura. I thought he was the most overrated player that was drafted in the first round. That doesn't even factor in that we drafted Fairley, who was a top 5 talent and who I consider the steal of the entire draft. A sick front 4 is the best thing for pass defense. I still would like to see another corner signed, but I don't want to see the Lions overpay a corner just to sign one. If they re-signed Chris Houston and paired him up with Wright, I would be totally on board with that. Right now, I think Mayhew & company should get an A+ for what they have done so far this offseason, from the draft to the free agents...especially since they did not have a lot of cap room. They have been extremely smart in not crippling their long-term cap.

:goodposting: 100% agree

That is gonna be a nasty front 7. What round you gonna have to jump on the Lions D in drafts with decent/heavy defensive scoring. prolly 8-10?

FORWARD DOWN THE FIELD!
Bringing back a ton of memories - Singing that as a kid. I haven't seen a game in Det in ages! Love the Tulloch signing, the contract is even encouraging. A one year deal will put the onus on T to perform. This front seven will tighten up the run D and help the corners out a lot. This is better than Barnett. It's hard not to get excited seeing how this team is coming together. Mayhew and Schwartz deserve all the credit for this one.

team needs remain with CB, OL, and SSafety Spivey should be ok, I think he will be better with better players in the LB core picking up the underneath slack.Wright is not the answer, I stand by that, get hayden or Cromartie right? Cap room still friendly with only 3.25 landing in Tullochs pockets....and at OLine, this will be what the Lions build on next year in the draft I assume, so do they get some crafty vets for this year?
:goodposting: I agree on almost all counts. I do think the Lions will bring in at least one more free agent O-lineman that can start. Backus still has the partial pec tear to deal with.Erik Coleman will be just fine in that defense. I don't expect to see Spievey this year unless Coleman gets injured. At this point I do see a Houston, Wright CB tandem. Detroit will probably bring Houston back on a one year deal. Considering the front 7, those two could both have career years. Whoever is with Wright, someone else is coming to town. To me Tulloch on a one year deal was a stroke of luck, but I'll gladly take it. Although since it was only for one year, I could see them still going after Barnett if they can get him on the cheap as well. Great front office moves so far.

The most important pickups for the Lions:

1. Tulloch. Addressed a pressing need for the Lions, giving them one of the best run-stoppers in the league. A steal at the price, but only a one-year contract which will bite them down the road. But this was badly needed for a terrible run defense.

2. Fairly. Probably won't be all-world like Suh, but still a Pro-Bowl quality talent. The best talent Detroit added, but not the most needed. Long term a more important addition than Tulloch.

3. LeShoure. Will be splitting the time with Best as the main ball carrier and do short yardage duties. Great potential and with Best showing he is not a someone you can count on being a full time back. A very important piece to the puzzle. Some very good running attacks feature a 1-2 punch, and this should give the Lions that.

4. Wright. The guy was beaten up for having a bad year, which IMO was mostly due to being banged up. A very gifted athlete who has a lot to prove and the motivation to do it. Another bargain, but also another one year contract.

5. Durant. A legitimate NFL LB, which means he is an upgrade to what the Lions currently have.

6. Young. Provides some great speed and break away potential to the slot. As a rookie, his contributions will be limited, but he will break some big plays for Detroit this year.

7. Leggett. A question mark due to injury, but will provide depth and has potential to be very good. Detroit's secondary will be good enough to support a very good front 7.

8. Davis. Gives Detroit a good kick returner and will see some duties at WR.

Detroit will have one of the better defenses in the NFL. Detroit's QB situation is probably the best it has ever been. Detroit can win with either Stafford or Hill. Running Backs should be solid. Pettigrew is a talent and quietly becoming one of the NFL's better TEs. CJ is all-world at WR. Still need OL help and a better threat WR opposite of Johnson. Detroit is not up to the level of Philly, GB and NO, but they are just behind that group. Will be in the playoff race come week 16.

My gut feeling is that the Lions will lock Tulloch up long-term at some point. But once the MLB market dried up, the Lions held all the cards and they took advantage of it.

Here's the thing -- short-term contracts give Lions flexibility to either keep or upgrade that player .... long-term contracts don't
Link
RT @LionsFanUK short term deals also offer player the flexibility to get out as well {} If he's THAT good, there's always franchise tag
This pretty much explains why the Lions are not getting ridiculous with the long-term overpaid contracts. I get more and more impressed with Mayhew every day.

Braylon Edwards....not sure where he is going now the jets signed Plexico....Would be a nice upgrade over Burleson, but probably wants more money than the Lions would offer. More likely end up with the Vikings despite the rumors negotions are off. But the Lions need a better WR #2.... :coffee:
