Determining Draft Order (1 Viewer)

Harpua

Arrogant *******
I have had the same league for a few years now, and we have always determined draft order from last years standings (worst record gets first pick). This has always worked out pretty well, and we have had no problems. Now, we have expanded from 10 teams to 12 teams and one player dropped out, so we have three new teams. what is the best way to draw draft slots to incorporate the new teams?

any suggestions would be appreciated

I think it depends on how you are stocking the two new teams - was there an expansion draft, but likely the two new teams should be given the first two picks (probably a coin flip for them). The new team taking over an existing roster should be taking the same pick that team would have had.

this is a redraft league, not a keeper. The problem is that the bottom teams are expecting high draft slots

?? Drafting based on last year's standings in a redraft makes as much sense as giving new guys any priority in a redraft, ie zero. You'll all starting from scratch so wtf? Pick numbers out of a hat.

I agree with BigRed. I joined a league with these exact circumstances last year and we had random order. no one complained; it was year one plain and simple.

:headbang: Last year has nothing to do with this year so drafting off of last years standings makes no sense at all

true, but there is a division of skill within the league. that being said. I think I will just do the random draft order.

Best way to do it is to just repick the entire draft order.

Our Keeper league always stuck them in the middle since the lower teams always played for draft picks and the higher teams played in the playoffs. In your case this would be 6, 7, and 8 (basing it on 9 remaining teams / 2 and rounded up).

Last year, we did this (copied this from my post at the time)...It went great by the way!

This is how our league plans to determine the draft order of our 12 person league this season.

The initial plan is to catch 12 turtles at the cottage, list all 12 participants in the league on a piece of paper in no particular order, tape a number from 1-12 on each turtles back, place them in a rocked off section of the beach in a perfect line and then let them go for 1/2 an hour. After 30 minutes, we will stand behind the rocked off area and read the numbers off their backs from left to right as seen looking out at the water. The farthest left will be the number assigned to the guy whose name is at the top of the list and so on reading numbers from left to right and writing names from top to bottom.

Once numbers have been assigned, we will place the turtles back in the rocked off area and turn them loose a second time for 30 minutes. The same rules apply. The turtle on the farthest left will represent the #1 pick in the draft. 2nd from the left is the 2nd overall pick and so on. Ties will be determined by shell position (whichever turtle has the slightest piece of shell that is farther left at the buzzer with a majority rules decision). We will fold the pieces of paper on the turtles' backs so that it is not readily understandable who the winning turtle actually is and that will allow us to count back from 12 to 1 to keep "The Decision of the Turtles" a secret until the very last two #'s are opened.

Anyway, this seems to be the way we are leaning toward picking the draft order this year. We've never used wild animals, so that should increase the unnecessary complexity a bit from last year, which is the given requirement.

**

We ended up digging about a 1 foot deep into the sand a perfect square, gave the 12 turtles some water, and put them in...2 of them climbed out, and the rule was made to automatically move any turtles who acheived this, to the end of the draft...Turtles were released back into the lake, and it was a smashing success.

Can I pile on here? The league I mentioned that was redraft last year is transitioning to keeper. What's more typica//fair in this case -- WTF or random?

i would think this would increase the chances of teams tanking if their season is done to try and get a higher draft slot for next yr ... seems like a bad idea

 Draw names out of hat or use the irony dice server.

In my 10 team league, we did draft order as follow (to prevent tanking)1st pick : 7th place 2nd pick : 8th place 3rd pick : 9th place 4th pick : 10th place5th pick : 6th place 6th pick : 5th place 7th pick : 4th place 8th pick : 3rd place 9th pick : 2nd place 10th pick : 1st place It worked GREAT!In relation to the original question, just pull names from a hat...no turtles necessary!

That's a really good point. So random is the way to go for keeper leagues? Or is there anything else to consider?
