Detroit O vs Niner D (1 Viewer)

After watching the Niners shut down the great cheese curds, what's your read on starting offensive players from Detroit this week?

Obviously, Mega is a must start - but what about Stafford, Smith, Young, Pettigrew or anybody else?

I think Stafford could be in trouble. I think he's gotten by alot on relying on Mega - and I think SF will do what they can to take that away.

What say you?

It's funny how perceptions change after only 1 week. Stafford could have thrown for 400+ and 2 TDs if Pettigrew and a couple other guys simply catch the ball. There were a number of drops vs. St. L. If you drafted Stafford, you paid a high price. Unless you have RG3 as a backup, Stafford is a must start. I would sit any and all Det RBs.Also, that 49ers D that "shut down the Pack" gave up 300+ and 2 Tds to Rogers. There is no way I'd bench Stafford, Pettigrew or Mega.

Going with MJD over Smith this weekend *DUH!*. Do not see things going well for Detroit. The Niners D is crazy.

:goodposting:The 49ers D was great against the run, but not so great against the pass. I mentioned this last year because early on in 2011, they were a "great" matchup in the FBGs ratings against the pass. Look at the playoffs, Brees and Eli shredded them. So, including playoffs the 49ers have given up 462-4TDs, 316-2TDs and 303-2TDs 1INT in their last 3 games to top passing teams. I consider Detroit to be a top passing team, so not sure why all the fear of the vaunted 49er pass defense. They haven't stopped any good QBs from posting good numbers recently.

Debating on whether to start Pettigrew vs. GB or Gonzo vs. DEN (might end up starting both).

Anyways, not much DET value this week I don't think.

I think Detroit's game plan will be to pass, pass, pass in this one. I wouldn't be surprised if they even get Broyles active for this game to try to go as pass heavy as they possibly can. It may be their only chance.

Since I own Titus Young Sr. and my league doesn't award points for penalties, I'm going to bench him.

Detroit isn't going to have any success running, this one's all on Stafford, so he'll probably have to throw 60 times. Yards and INTs's will be there, hope TD's are too. Kevin Smith isn't a bad PPR start, not a good one but not bad either.

Starting Matty Ice over Stafford.

I had started K. Smith as my flex over Steve Johnson last week. Benching K. Smith now.

Starting Mega.

I may have no choice to flex K.Smith if Maclin can't go..this 1PPR though. I can easily see him finishing the game with around 5 receptions. Total yardage though, I don't see how it goes over 50.

Stafford and CJ fall under the NBYS rule.

The 49ers are vulnerable to the pass because no one tries to run on them very much. Even though they did shut down Green Bay's offense probably as well as anyone could, they still allowed decent stats to the Packers' studs.

Thinking about starting Alex Smith over Stafford
I wouldn't do that.
:goodposting: I posted the same 2011 stats for good QBs against SF last year and it seems like people are ignoring my post above. SF in 2011, regular season and post season, was not a great pass defense, especially against good QBs. If anyone benches Stafford for Alex Smith, they get what they deserve. Benching Stafford for Ryan is different as I am extremely high on him regardless.

Obviously, never sit Megatron. I would sit Stafford if there are better options for your team. No offense to Stafford, but he is not as good as Rodgers, and is prone to interceptions.

I like Stafford, but last year was last year. Last week he kept a bad Rams team in the game with multiple picks. The best thing for Stafford owners this week would be for SF to get up early and play a soft dime the rest of the game.

It's pretty close if you get dinged for INTs. Might even give Smith the edge if it's 4 pt TDs.
I'll take the 49er offense over DET's offense, and think Stafford will throw a couple of picks and get sacked often and early.
Holy overreaction Batman. Smith had 211-2TDs. Even in my league with -2 for INTs, Smith had 20 points and Stafford had 17. So in Stafford's worst game and Smith's great game (all kinds of articles about Smith outplaying Rodgers and SF offense being the best/better than GB offense), Smith outscored him by 3 points. In 2011, Stafford had 12 games that he had greater than 211 yards AND 2+ TDs. In 2011, Alex Smith had 3 and Alex Smith had 1 game of 3 TDs and had a high (in a different game) of 291 yards. Stafford had 7 games of 3+ TDs, including 2 of 4 and 2 of 5 and he had 10 games with more yards than Smith's highest yardage of 2011. Stafford had almost 2000 more yards and 24 more TDs in 2011.Let's not get silly now. Stafford is such a better FF QB than Smith it is almost ridiculous and as seen above, SF's pass defense isn't all that against solid QBs. I would put my money on SF to win the game, but I would put my money on Stafford FF wise and not think twice.

I don't think this is about the quality of the niners pass D. We can debate whether or not those games accurately reflect a suspect pass d given that Brees and Manning both were around 60 attempts and Rogers's 44 would have been his second most in 2011. The reality is, I expect DET to pass something along the lines of 50 times and I expect a similar gameplan from the niners, namely taking away deep passing by having Goldson play deep while allowing a bit more room underneath and relying on the superior tackling of the LBs to keep any short passes as short gains. Stafford is a very safe start this week, though I would be concerned about him finishing the game. Niners had Rodgers dead to rights on several plays that he escaped thanks to his scrambling and Stafford isn't close to the caliber of Rodgers when it comes to escaping. Calvin is a must start every week, but I'm not expecting a big game from him. I'd actually be okay starting Smith in PPR leagues, expecting 6-8 catches out of the backfield without much yardage, but almost a definite sit in non-PPR. Pettitgrew seems like an obvious one as well.

Are we playing FF? Who gives a hoot about keeping a bad Rams team in the game? In all 3 of my leagues, Smith and Stafford basically tied and yet that was considered a great game for Smith and a horrible one for Stafford. Last year? So, you think that we should ignore the 5000-41TDs of Stafford and the 3000-17TDs of Smith because of week 1 of 2012.Sorry, but you are crazy if you think that Smith is a better FF QB than Stafford. I can't think of a bad scenario for Stafford. SF goes up early, Stafford gets garbage time points. Detroit goes up early, Stafford is having a great game (SF doesn't give up FF points to RB). Kevin Smith is not going to eat into Stafford's points this week, but Gore/Hunter will absolutely eat into Smith's.

I'm not talking in terms of FF (I don't play FF). I just looking at what the 49ers defense can do as far as pressure, and how the 49ers balanced offense will do at home. I know Stafford is miles ahead of Smith as far as a passer (which is why I don't buy that Smith outplayed Rodgers this past game for a lot of reasons). And with the 49ers being geared up for the Handshake Bowl II game at home, Stafford could be in for a rough game.

Not expecting much from the Lions offense this week. They are on the road, on natural grass vs a defense that did a great job shutting down a better QB. I am benching Stafford (for Flacco). K Smith may be productive in with check downs and could get rocked and hurt, as has been his MO in the past. I am starting CalJo but not expecting much.

Petty and the other WRs feel like a big gamble this week.

Agreed. Teams passed more against the 49ers because they couldn't run. Don't mistake my reference to their quality to have anything to do with real football, I am purely discussing stats and they allowed a lot of FF points to the good QBs they faced. Here are some 2011 games against SF:2011 Regular SeasonVick 416-2TDs, 1INTStafford 293-2TDsE. Manning 311-2TDs, 2INTs2011 PlayoffsBrees 462-4TDsE. Manning 316-2TDs2012 Week 1Rodgers 303-2TDs 1INT Also, don't forget that Brees' 60 attempts yielded 462 yards and 4TDs. He was passing at will. Rodgers and Manning were less effective, but still FF-wise (which is all that matter in this discussion) they produced. The only fantasy relevant (2011) QB that played poorly was Roethlisberger when his foot was basically falling off and when he shouldn't even have played. All top QBs against the 49ers in 2011/2012 have put up 300 yards and 2 TDs.

 OK? This is a fantasy board and you replied directly to a post about starting Smith over Stafford. Based on last week, not sure anyone would disagree that the 49ers looked good beating a great team in their building versus the Lions struggling to beat a team that has averaged 3 wins per season the last 5 years.

So yes, I think last week might be a better indicator given how poorly they performed against a pretty bad defense.

I post in the FFA in political threads and don't hold office anywhere. Do you have to be a politician to post in those threads? Is this board exclusive to only those who play FF? Is my knowledge of the 49ers less because I don't play FF? Even though I have been a fan of that team for over 3 decades? My reply was to Short Corner who from what it seems is a 49er fan or follows them closely. If you're looking at terms of passing yardage out of either team, I would say of course Stafford would have more than Smith, because the 49ers aren't a QB driven offense and Staford is a way better passer. At the same time, the 49ers have a way better rushing attack than DET does, backed by a great defense and ST's.

OK, I don't get you guys. My post and Leroy's were directly in response to someone in FF sitting Stafford for Smith. Why reply to an I'm starting Smith over Stafford, purely FF post and mention leagues dinged for INTs and then say you didn't say Smith was a better FF QB? You said "last year was last year" and that seems to imply you agree that Smith is a better start. Whatever, not worth continuing.

Am I missing something or did Rodgers not throw for 300 yards and 2 Tds against the best defense in football?

There is no way I would bench Stafford this week.

Also, if I was going to start anyone, it would be Young. Look what Cobb did against them. Isn't Titus someone that they move around like Cobb, and is the 3rd option?

Even though I like Stafford over Smith I'm not sure about this. 4th or 5th option last week pretty much.

Do you not realize that some leagues do indeed get dinged for INTs?Do you think Matt Ryan is the best FF QB? Surely he is better than Rodgers, Brees, Brady and Stafford since he outscored them last week.

Not to put to much into last year, but Stafford had 293 yards 2td's and no int's with the Lions only gaining about 60 yards on the ground. Both sides are pretty much the same so why couldn't you expect about the same from each?

Well, if SF decides NOT to only rush 3 so much like they did vs. Rodgers, then I think Stafford will be lucky to clip 225.

Yeah Rodgers threw for 303yds, but the Packers total yards was 348. When teams have to become one dimensional because they can't run, the Qb tends to put up some numbers from having to pass. I'd feel comfy starting Stafford, I can see 300 and 2 in a loss.

I am thinking that Kevin Smith may be a decent start in ppr leagues. I think he could fill the Cobb role from last week.

Their meeting last year was a bit of an anomoly. It was one of two games in the regular season that the niners actually lost the turnover battle. I'd be surprised if Stafford hoists it 50 times again without at least one interception or fumble. Still, I think you have the right of it in terms of yards and TDs, but add in two turnovers and I think it's closer to the center of the target.

I got 33 out of Rodgers, would not call that much of a shut down.

After watching the Niners shut down the great cheese curds, what's your read on starting offensive players from Detroit this week?Obviously, Mega is a must start - but what about Stafford, Smith, Young, Pettigrew or anybody else?I think Stafford could be in trouble. I think he's gotten by alot on relying on Mega - and I think SF will do what they can to take that away. What say you?
I got 33 out of Rodgers, would not call that much of a shut down.
My statement was kind of broad - Nelson & Jennings were held to pedestrian numbers and the running game was non-existent.

Am I missing something or did Rodgers not throw for 300 yards and 2 Tds against the best defense in football? There is no way I would bench Stafford this week.
Yeah Rodgers threw for 303yds, but the Packers total yards was 348. When teams have to become one dimensional because they can't run, the Qb tends to put up some numbers from having to pass. I'd feel comfy starting Stafford, I can see 300 and 2 in a loss.
:goodposting: Calvin, stafford, pettiness all starts.I'm just as interested to see what that whiny little ##### Schwartz cries about this time.
