Detroit teacher fired for breaking up violent fight with a broom. (1 Viewer)

Outrage!

Seriously? She was just beating a kid with a broom that was in a fight. She wasn't doing anything close to "breaking up" that fight.

I can't stand headlines like this. Edward R. Murrow is rolling in his grave saying I told you so over and over. Instead of "Two stupid people in a fight and a third stupid person attempts to get involved with a broom", we get this headline attempting to create controversy.

What do you think the little woman was attempting to do with the broom?

Soooooo.... You think that she should have been fired?

That's why teachers should be armed. When she pulls her Glock, the fight should be over. If not, she fires a warning shot. After that, you go for the knees.

She was whacking the kid pretty hard. But he was putting a whooping on the kid so Im not sure where I stand on this

Years ago, when I first started, they told us to never ever attempt to break up a fight. Just yell at the kids and tell them to stop and wait for an administrator.

Ive been teaching 15 years and there has been one fight in my suburban white school. I guess you could call where I work a competitive neighborhood

That was a pretty solid fight by the way... Both participants knew how to handle themselves well. Unlike the "Girl Fight" thread.

Huh? Oh I get it.. :fishing:

The reporters first quote:

"The teacher used a broom to break up the fight. It goes without saying that was wrong..."

No, it doesn't go without saying. If a teacher hits a kid (who's pummeling another student) with a broom to try to keep another student from being seriously injured that's not wrong.

Stupid woman hitting the kid on the back with a broom. Had no effect at all. Let her be an example to the other teachers... if you're going to get fired for it, use a baseball bat and go for the head or knees. "Take the biggest guy in the world, shatter his knee and he'll drop like a stone." [/dalton]

I don't know. Based on what I see on a minute worth of video? Of course not. She might be an awesome teacher that had a moment of stupid.

Are you of the opinion that a decision of whether or not a person should lose their employment can be based on that minute of video? I think anyone that answers that question with a yes is a fool.

In the real world, you are right. In the court of law, not always the case

Detroit public schools have been terrible since I can remember, and this woman shouldn't have been fired.

Seeing that kid lift his shirt was just like seeing Denzel in Glory. School will be safer without this broom wielding maniac.

Just waggle the broom in the boy's face or use it to lift his arm (like lifting a hockey stick). Or, yeah, just sit back until the cavalry arrives.

Yeah. Rule #1: Don't touch the kids.

This is how ####ed up the Detroit Public School system is. This teacher is going to get fired for trying to protect other students in a violent fight.

Yet MSU recruit Jayru Campbell is allowed back at Cass Tech after body slamming a security guard. The Michigan state law says that any student using violence against any staff member is an automatic 180 day suspension. Detroit Schools disregarded the rule because Campbell is an All-State QB and they want him back.

Maybe the kid's back was on fire.

what if the fight is so one sided your fear for the life of the other party? This world sucks that you can't do what is right any longer. Based on what i saw in the video I think the teacher should claim self defense and sue the school for wrongfull termination.

I break up very fight, if they want to fire me for that than so be it. I'm not going to stand in my hallway or my classroom and watch 2 kids fight. It's just not happening.

Just sucks that you even have to think about it or that there is even a possibility that you could face any type of reprimand.

Yes, yes it does.

Man, I'm sure glad my parents decided to move out of Detroit when I was 10. That place is a mess.

I love how the mom is pointing out the "obvious" scars this mongrel received from the brutal broom attack. To me, all of this aggressive behavior we see in these kids is brought on mostly by their idiot parents.

Agreed. I don't think about it, just seems obvious to me what to do. I teach right outside of a Detroit and many of the kids are from Detroit. I've never had a parent or kid ever respond negatively to a fight being broken up. They are actually very apologetic.

I sure hope those boys were made to clean up the room afterwards. They made a mess and they'll never learn if you let them get away with it.
