***Detroit Tigers thread: 1st pick yet again, this is not fun*** (3 Viewers)

That was one of the most impressive pitching performances of the year.  He got the fastball up to 98 today but it was the devastating slider and him mixing in the change that led to all the swinging strikes.  Not sure how consistent he'll be but we just witnessed his upside, and it's pretty high.

I was really impressed with his changeup because it is still a work in progress. His slider is already major league sick. If he keeps throwing the changeup like he did today and commands his fastball, the sky's the limit.

It's been quite a while since a starting pitching prospect excited me this much. He just needs to be consistent and that comes with experience. He definitely is not afraid. I also think he took today's start as a personal challenge because Shane Greene is close to returning. He was up for the challenge.

Also Fulmer going from 98mph fastball to 85mph change up is filthy. I don't know why he was holding back the change up but that pitch may lead to him becoming an ace.

So who is out when Norris is ready?  Has to be Pelfrey.

From now on the Tigers need to start warming up a pitcher when Sanchez is in the 5th inning..if he gives up more than 1 hit in the 6th get him out of there.  Saw a stat on the MLB Network that Sanchez ERA the 6th inning this year is 23.40

Nick with a huge moonball which just fell a couple feet shy of repeating Miggy's shot and Maybin bases loaded hit.  Nice inning.

He's just learning the change.  If you throw a flat change-up, it's getting smashed by ML hitters.

Most young pitchers face the same challenge, change up is a key pitch especially if you have two plus pitches already.

Any word on Zimmerman.  A pulled groin can be very serious.
MRI tomorrow but both he and team are upbeat.  They have an off day where they can skip him, and he wouldn't have to pitch until a week from Wednesday in Anaheim.

In related news Verhagen sent to Toledo, Buck Farmer called up.  I think they did this to get VerHagen back on track, but also to have a long man considering neither Anibal or Pelfrey can pitch more than 5 innings and this pen is getting tired.  Need to finish this homestand strong before the 6 game west coast trip to Oakland and Anaheim, two places they rarely play well.

Are we going to give Brad credit for winning 7 of 8 like we gave him blame for losing 10 of 11?
I see two things which contributed to the turn around:

1.  Miggy hitting better than anybody in the universe again

2.  Maybin.  There is a chance he might not  hit .585 for the season, but he will provide a desperately needed level of enthusiasm to the dugout.

The coaching staff probably should get some kudos for helping Miggy adjust his timing and finding that swing again.   Now Maybin is just being Maybin   Figuratively speaking, this team was literally like watching the walking dead, and something needed changed   And along came Maybin.  Ausmus is an OK manager.  But something needed to change in the chemistry /attitude and I think they finally found that spark. Maybin changed this team and Ausmus in the process

in summary, the future ain't what it used to be

And damn, Nick can hit   But that has been one of the few constants.

Of course not...Cambin gets the credit for providing the spark for winning.  When they lose it is Brads fault.

Actually I am kinda liking Brad now. Ever since his meltdown he has been a little grumpier with the media..makes for better interviewss

hopefully he moves on to the eating meatloaf during post game interview shtick soon

I am sure Brad's wife is thrilled about the winning streak.  That had to be a tough stretch for her during the first two weeks of May.

It is huge to see Justin starting to mature as a pitcher. Also big to see Maybin take the leadoff spot and run with it. That will really give the Tigers a sick lineup.  Maybin, Kinsler, Miggy, Victor, Nick, JD, Upton, Salty/Mc, Iggy.  The first seven are sick and even 8 and 9 can hurt you.  One of the Tigers best lineups ever.   I think dropping Upton to the 6th or 7th spot might even bring him out of his slump.  The Tigers need to get about 5 plus over .500 by the break and then pickup a good starter and they will be set for a run to the playoffs.

I agree with jon about the lineup, even if it is in a slightly different order. Maybin as the leadoff (as long as he keeps hitting) would stretch out the lineup while putting speed on the bases to disrupt things for the opposing pitcher. Kinsler is/was a good leadoff guy but his power numbers makes him a better #2 imo.

Is Upton the highest paid #7-8 hitter in MLB?

On another note the Prince is struggling. Still hard to believe the Tigers were able to unload him and actually get an All-Star type player in return.

By Wins Above Replacement, Prince Fielder is the worst everyday player in the entire American League. Wins Above Replacement is a catch-all stat that's meant to measure all kinds of contributions, ranging from hitting to baserunning to defense, and by extension the position a player occupies. As a designated hitter, Fielder obviously offers no defensive value. He's perennially one of the worst baserunners in the game. Which means that for him to help the Rangers, he needs to hit the snot out of the ball.

Name your favorite offensive stat, and Fielder comes out looking terrible no matter what. He's batting .193, slugging just .281, and sporting a measly .269 on-base percentage. He's managed a feeble two home runs. Adjust for the hitter-friendly Arlington environment in which he plays his home games, and Fielder isn't just the worst overall player in the American League ... he's the worst hitter, too.

Fulmer is going to be a legit K pitcher, even when he's having an off night. But watching him get 15 or so pretty easy outs tonight, many in the ground and early in the count, gives me a tingle in me gulliver.

:banned:

And then you see what he did to Khris Davis in the 7th, 97mph up that Davis couldn't catch up to, then an 86mph slider that had him flailing. Terrific stuff. I'm not gonna get too excited, but Fulmer seems to have #2 upside, not just middle of the rotation upside.

I don't have the same hopes for Matt Boyd, just hoping he's better than Pelfrey.

Starting to feel real good about three of our starters.  Assuming JZimm recovers 100 percent, we are now just trying to find guys to be our 4th and 5th starter.   Fulmer  and Maybin could be what makes this season.

Isn't Pelfrey like the 3rd starter?

I know Brad desperately wants to get 6+ innings out of his starters, but the only ones who showed they can do that is JV, JZ, and Fulmer.  Brad needs to have a trigger finger with the rest after 5 innings. We have to stop this giving up 3 runs in the sixth crap. A base-runner or two with no outs and you are gone.

Get too quick of a trigger and then you burn out the pen, which isn't good enough to rely on more of them in higher leverage situations. Besides, Zimm isn't even pitching yet and Fulmer is probably on an ip limit.

Can't believe I'm writing this, but...what about Lohse? Some innings need to get eaten to get to the home stretch in hopes of being in competition late and it'll be tough for the current roster to effectively do that. That draft pick comp goes away soon, yes?

The Tigers promoted their future closer, Joe Jiminez to Double A Erie. All he did in Lakeland was pitch 17 innings, allowed no runs, 5 hits, 5 walks (0.58 WHIP) with 28 strikeouts. His overall minor league numbers are sick. He throws a high 90s fastball with late movement and a swing and miss slider.

I can't wait to see how he does against better hitters. In his first game in Erie, he struck out the side.

Loved watching him pitch in West Michigan last year.  He was a lights out closer for them  when they won the championship.  Was in the Futures Game last year too.   I am hoping for great things from him given the state of the bullpen.

Angels walk big Nick to get to Upton, didn't think I'd see that this year.

Coming into the game Tigers had a .303 slugging percentage in Anaheim over the last six years. It's under .300 now, this is disgusting.
