***Detroit Tigers thread: 1st pick yet again, this is not fun*** (1 Viewer)

S###, S###, S### ...YES!

A fine effort by Lobstein; nice work by Hardy to get out of trouble; efficient work by Coke; good save by Nathan. JD bails out a team that couldn't buy a run. Nice.

I've come to admire, purely as a former player and 47 year fan of baseball, the Kansas City Royals. They are the bizarro team: they put the ball in play instead of stretching out ABs, they make contact instead of taking big cuts, they run fast while allowing very few SBs, they're the best defensive team, their outfielders run down everything, their SP is average and the long relief is horrible, but Herrera/Wade/Holland are an absolute stone cold lock (& none of them are overused). They draft high schoolers. They have the lowest three true outcome percentage in baseball by a country mile.

They're more like the 1914 Philadelphia Athletics than any team playing in 2014.

Four most memorable games of the YTD: Davis 2-out GS (& everything else in that inning), the rookies going B2B to steal a win, Price losing in Tampa while pitching damn close to a perfect game, and tonight's here-we-go-again-WAIT! NO! shocker.

Love/hate this team. If I was ####### them I'd shoot a three foot load on their back not because they're hot but purely out of frustration.

As an O's fan, I'm keeping a very close eye on this Central race, assuming that the Angels are going to secure the #1 seed and play the Wild Card winner.

Tigers are starting to scare me. I feel like they are coming to life and still end up walking away with the Central by 4 or 5 games. Smoke and mirrors teams like the Royals almost always give way to genuine contenders in the end.

When I think of all the things that went wrong in Baltimore this year, and then look at the standings, I'm amazed. That's a pretty resilient bunch you got over there.

The Lions job was actually a fairly attractive position. I have no idea why they selected Caldwell. Typical bizarre move by the Lions. I am sure he will have to have about 5 horrible years before they even consider firing him.
Pretty sure he wasn't in the top 3 of the HC they wanted. But it's like Barry striding up to the podium to announce the Ebron pick with 9:30 left on the clock. Wisenhunt picked TEN and the next two guys up (Jay Gruden was one) didn't even want to interview.#### making a good decision, let's do something quick!3 singles + BB with no outs = how many runs? Seen this before...
I agree. Seemed like a panic hire after The Whiz turned them down and went to the Titans. The thing about Caldwell is that he talks a great game when interviewed and sounds like a decent man compared to Schwartz. The issue I have is the same I had when he coached the Colts. I went to an X-Game and zeroed in on Caldwell and he hardly ever says anything during the game, and often looks like a deer in the headlights. I remember one Colt game when Caldwell sent the punt team out and Manning waved them to get off the field.

I just discovered something today...

We know my mother suffered her fatal stroke around 5:30 p.m. on October 10, 2011. We know this because the last person she was on the phone with hung up around 5:20, and she was discovered by the neighbor a short time later.

My last phone conversation was on Sunday afternoon. She was excited because while the Detroit Tigers ALCS game that day had been rained out, it was rescheduled to 4:15 p.m. the next day. The Lions were playing the Chicago Bears that night (Monday Nigh Football). Awesome - both her favorite teams playing back to back.

Yesterday I looked up the box score of that Tigers game. Texas scored a couple runs early, then in the third inning the Tigers Ryan Raburn hit a 3-run HR to to grab the lead. That got me thinking - so I did some research this afternoon. Looking through live blogs and baseball forums, I have determined Raburn hit that home run at precisely...

5:31 p.m., October 10, 2011.

We'll never know for sure, but there is a chance that the last conscious moment of her life was a joyful celebration of her beloved Tigers. If you knew my mom, that is about as beautiful of a moment as one could choose to be your last.

Raburn was Mr. September. Unfortunately he sucked butt the other months. Hopefully he made your mothers last moments happy. Nice story.

I think Detroit needs to put all these Cy Young winners in the pen and bring up more AAAer's for their starting rotation.

This is hard to accept that JV is just a #3-4 starter that eats innings, the sample size is now way too big to ignore.

Dumbfounds me how they keep trotting him out there, to go deep in games, when he clearly should be treated with kid gloves right now.

You're down 4-0 going into the bottom of the 7th. I don't send him out there in the first place. Then he gives up a lead off double to Gomes. That's the absolute latest you pull the plug on him. There's no reason for him to face another batter, let alone 4.

If I had to put money down on who is going to win the division, it would be on the Royals. They are having fun and are winning. I don't see them pulling a Sux. The Tigers just don't have 'it'. They might slide in and get the last wild card spot, but they need to start playing better even for that.

Saw JV interviewed after the game and he said he felt great and felt strong. Was not happy with his change..Said Santana hit a change up and a few more hits were off the change.

I was only half paying attention, but wasn't the Yan double a bloop?
That's not the point. It's about picking your battles. There seems to be some unwritten rule that says don't talk to JV about coming out of the game when he hasn't hit the century mark yet

In the ####show that has been his season, he's topped 100 pitches in 24 of 27 starts. In 2 of the 3 he didn't, he still got to 97. There's no reason for it.

His OPS against by inning:

6th inning - .899 over 22.2 innings

7th inning - .839 over 14.0 innings

8th inning - .837 over 2.2 innings

Opponents slash vs him in 3rd plate appearances - .322/.371/.505

I know the bullpen's been bad, but when the OPS against is approaching .900, how bad they do in a game becomes moot because JV isn't capable of doing any better.

Last night, down 4-0 and already sitting at 95ish pitches seems like the opportune time to say, 'let's save a few bullets.'.

GAME NOTES

-- For the fourth straight game, Miguel Cabrera -- who has been bothered by a sore right ankle -- has been tabbed the designated hitter. Victor Martinez will make his fourth straight start at first base.

-- Alex Avila is out of the starting lineup for a second straight game. I suspect it's just a precaution, as Tigers manager Brad Ausmus told reporters Wednesday that Avila could play. Bryan Holaday will get another start at catcher.

-- Tigers infield prospect Hernan Perez will make his first start at shortstop this season since being called up earlier this month. Eugenio Suarez and Andrew Romine will be available off the bench if needed.

-- Tigers outfielder Tyler Collins will start in right field and bat second behind Ian Kinsler. It's the first time Collins, who made the Tigers' Opening Day roster, has been in the starting lineup since early April.

-- Victor Martinez has reached base safely in 22 straight games, which ranks as the longest active streak in the American League. He has hit .360 with 24 doubles, 10 home runs and 49 RBIs in 61 career games against Cleveland.

-- The Tigers remain 1 1/2 games behind the division-leading Kansas City Royals. They own a half-game lead over the Seattle Mariners for the second wild card spot in the AL. The Indians trail the Tigers by 3 1/2 games for the wild card slot.

-- The forecast for Cleveland calls for plentiful sunshine with temperatures slowly falling to near 82 degrees. No rain expected tonight.

That Victor bomb felt like the nail in their coffin. Hopefully they're dead in the water by the time they get to Detroit next weekend.

That was a chit error call on Kinsler that cost a run. That ball was in the air so long that Collins should have called him off. Looked like Kinsler was just drifting back waiting to be called off.

Victor is has to be team MVP. Guy has been clutch most of the year.
Without a doubt..not a bad contract year run too. This will tack on another year or so to Victors new deal.

I know it will never happen but When players get hurt during the off season as Victor did and the team pays 12 million for a season that he could not play, the team should have a one year option added to the end of the deal.

Both schedules are somewhat on the easy side. Detroit has 10 games vs. SUX/Vikings while KC has 11 games vs. SUX/Red SUX, about a wash there. Detroit only has 6 road games left vs. 12 for the Royals, an advantage for Detroit. Detroit has 3 games vs. SF while KC has 3 games vs NYY, close call except the home advantage Detroit has. Both has a series against Cleveland. The 6 head to head games will of course be the most critical.

If they take 2-3 from KC in both series should be in good shape. Hopefully KC will lose both east coast series. I hate inter-league play this late in the season. That should be done by the end of July.

If they don't make it to 5 full (or 4-1/2 with the home team winning), the game will be called and this never happened. Looks like an all-night storm amiright?

Henry Schulman@hankschulman

Folks, the five-inning rule has been around for as long as I can remember, and Im old. No use whining about it. #sfgiants

You made my night.

Never remember suspd game rules.
Wasn't sure myself. If it's the last meeting of the season between two teams and their are no available remaining off dates for a makeup, they'll keep the teams around until the middle if the night trying to cram it in. I only checked one local weather site but it doesn't look like they'll have a break in the weather.

Oakland county h.s. football games rained out and rescheduled for tomorrow? WTH - you usually wait your whole varsity career waiting for a game in the slop.
