***Detroit Tigers thread: 1st pick yet again, this is not fun*** (3 Viewers)

Boobies and gators. Florida sounds like it could be a good week.
Florida is horrible, but since they hold spring training there, it's not so bad
High of 70 today and nothing but sunshine in the forecast. You live in Detroit, right?

Downtown Lakeland has several bars/restaurants. Fresco's right in the middle of downtown is very nice. Craft beers and cocktails. Great menu. Harry's for Louisiana style seafood. Black and Brew for coffee. Molly's or Linkster's for bars.

More on the outskirts of downtown in the historic district is a place called Patio 850 if you're more into wine. There's a new place called 1961 for great food and a fine dining flair. Fat Maggie's for American style BBQ and sandwiches.

Bring your clubs too. Golf courses everywhere and plenty of gray hairs from your neck of the woods clogging them up.

I was warned Lakeland was full of rednecks. Leaving for Vegas in a few days, then going down to Florida. Im expecting to see dudes in overalls fighting gators and baseball.

It's not that bad.  Florida is full of awful people but spring training is a good time.  I'll be there two weeks from Monday, can't wait.

According to Morosi Anibal already has a sore right tricep.  Shut down until Monday.  Lovely.
Terrible news.
Yeah a resurgent Anibal is pretty key to the season.  Tigers do have some decent SP depth organizationally but we really need a solid year out of Anibal.

Injuries will be very key, keeping the big bats and JV, Anibal, and JZimm healthy goes a long way in this being a contending team or a middling mess.  Overall I really liked the offseason, I think Pelfrey is the only signing that I hate.  But expectations for him will be low so I guess anything above replacement level is a win.  Would have preferred a guy like Latos but maybe Avila knows somethng we don't about Pelfrey.  :oldunsure:

Got Tigers/Nats tix for two of the three in DC this year.  They play the Orioles for 4 the same week, probably get a game up in B-More also.

I think this team looks great until you get to starting pitching, then it is.... :oldunsure:

Pretty much all question marks after the first one or two.  Would love to see Sanchez earn a full year paycheck, but that is a long shot.

They will need to be a few games over ,500 going into All-Star break and hopefully close enough where they can pick up a top starter.

Brad seems to only be a so-so manager at best.  I only have some quibbles with his decisions, but seems to bring very little to the clubhouse.  Nice guy, but this team will need some fire lit under them at times, and Brad is just not that kind of guy.

I will watch and hope.  Still some players who will be fun to watch.  Just not excited about their post-season chances.  Last year's team was absolutely awful after a rather strong start. This team hioefully should be funner to watch post April.

Four runs in the top of the first. Harbaugh coaching first base. Coincidence? I think not. #thatsjustgoodcoaching #Harbaugheffect

Maybin gone for 4-6 with a broken wrist.  Wrist injuries are lingering, not good.

I'm all for signing Lincecum, guy has had some decent stints in the bullpen.

Yeah wrist injuries are the worst

Sanchez has no arm issues after 25-pitch bullpen

Viera, Fla. – Finally, Anibal Sanchez was able to get back on the mound and throw.

Shut down since Feb. 22 with inflammation in his triceps, then waylaid by a bronchial ailment, Sanchez was still not feeling too peppy when he threw a 25-pitch bullpen in Lakeland Saturday morning.

“He said his arm felt good,” manager Brad Ausmus said. “He was still pretty congested, though. But he said there were no issues with his arm.”

The Tigers will proceed cautiously. There is no time frame yet for him to start a spring game.

“We still have some time and he still needs to go through a progression,” Ausmus said.

Sanchez will throw at least one more bullpen and perhaps a live batting practice session before he’s ready to pitch in a game.

Any preference on who wins the 5th starting spot?  Norris and Greene look to be fighting for that spot.  I still don't understand what happened to Greene last year.

I want it to be Norris, so we have a lefty in the rotation. Probably best to start Greene in the pen and rebuild his confidence anyway. He'll get spot starts at some point to prove where he belongs long term.

Would be nice if it was Norris but a month in Toledo or so to work on stuff probably wouldn't hurt.  He is still just 22, no need to rush him if Greene looks decent.  It's not like he won't be up by May anyway.

In other news...Bryan Holaday has a 2.875 OPS through four games.  He's out of options so they'll have to choose carefully between he and Salty, so we'll see how the spring transpires.

Can he play CF??

The over is 85 for this team which means you should bet your house, your parents house and your neighbors house on the under.  This pitching staff is atrocious. A good pen won't mean much when your starters are getting shellacked on a nightly basis.   This squad will be sub .500.  Mark this post.

Easy.

It's 81.5 chief

I kind of like this teams chances.  Their batting lineup should be excellent.  Their bullpen has been fixed.  Their defense should be solid.  Their starting pitching is probably going to be below average, but not terrible like last year.  They are really just one good starter away from being a serious contender, which should be addressable at the All-star break.  It is mostly a matter of staying healthy and hopefully Upton not striking out 300 times like he has been doing thus far in Spring training.

Starting pitching below avg? That's being kind.  It's 1 of the worst rotations in baseball.  Zimmerman sucked in the NL East last year, he's going to improve in the AL now? Verlander has 1 good 1/2 a season in the last 3 years.  The next full season Anibal throws will be his 1st and Mike F'n Pelfrey is your 4th starter?!?

This rotation is pathetic.  Perhaps they can outscore their opponents enough to be somewhat respectable come year's end.  Perhaps..
