***Detroit Tigers thread: 1st pick yet again, this is not fun*** (4 Viewers)

Soooo I'm trying to be judicious about my excitement but I love this team... Especially when Maybin comes back. The pitching may not be as strong as when they made the last run but this lineup compliments each other so well it's crazy. Health is the huge hurdle but props to Avila for the caveats of the offensive side of this team right now.

Upton does not look comfortable at the plate..but neither does Cabrera. Upton ever batted second before?
While not doing bad, Upton and Gose are the two biggest non-contributors.  Nick and Salty have really picked up the slack.  Nick is looking like an All-Star at the plate so far.  Hopefully he can keep that confidence and plate discipline and keep drilling the ball.  Defensively, Nick has been pretty solid too.  I would almost rather see Iggy at the top with Kinler in the 2 spot, then dropping Upton down to 7th.  But it is too early.  The lineup is solid throughout, and Miggy and Upton should hit their stride and then with Maybin returning soon, you have to like it,  The offense has been very good and still has some upside.  Starting pitiching has been promising even with a few bad outings sprinkled within.  There seems to be more depth there then expected.  Bullpen is coming around too, but still unsure of K-Rod in a tight game.  Unfortunately, the division is going to be very tough.

Maybin got hit in the wrist with another pitch last night.  Had to leave the game.  Hopefully that doesn't set him back too much.  Just bad luck for him this season.

After this his 9th season season Maybin will have made around 23 million in his MLB career.  Not bad for a guy with 42 HRs and 200 RBIs for his career.  Players lioke Maybin and Pelfrey can make a dam good living in this game if they can hang on a roster for 7-8 years.

I think the Tigers are at about 4 boneheaded running in the base paths plays this season.  It ought to be a stat, BHRP's.

I am just hoping they can get one win in KC this upcoming series - don't lay an egg and get swept.  Looks like they are going Greene, Zimmermann, Pelfrey even though they are off today.  I am fine with that.  After the KC series, the schedule softens up with Cle and Oak @ home before road series against Minn and Cle.  Hopefully they can bank some wins during that stretch.  I am very happy with the 7-4 start given the teams they were scheduled to start the season against.

Making good contact and his plate discipline looks better so far.  280-15-75 seems within reason.
Except he hasn't walked yet. Pretty sure I saw earlier that he's got the most ABs of anyone who hasn't walked yet. That's concerning.

ETA: His OBP is lower than his BA right now. Don't see that very often. Again - concerning.

ETA2: He has a .464 BABIP.

It won't maintain, but a 3.3 soft% leaves me less concerned about the lack of BB's so far.  It'd be one thing if he were just getting lucky, but he's making solid or better contact.

Yeah he is hitting the ball on the screws a lot. Sure taking more walks is something he needs to do, but where he is hitting in the lineup it's less of an issue. His job is to score the big bats on base, so he's swinging away.

The starting pitching stinks.   Outside of Zimmermann there isn't a reliable starter at this point.  Thankfully the lineup continues to put up tons of runs.

Anthony Gose is my new Brandon Inge.
K-Rod is my new Joe Nathan and Papa Grande rolled into one.  Good thing is that he probably won`t be available tonight after a 30 pitch 9th.  Seemed like the KC bench was saying "He has nothing"  Last night he had some 87 MPH fastballs that looked like BP.

At least K-rod seems quick to acknowledge his suckiness.  He may be slow to realize he just doesn't have it anymore though.  You really need a halfway decent fastball for the change up to be effective and 88 mph is not.

The problem is if K-Rod continues to suck Brad will keep trotting him out there in the 9th when they should just turn the page and go with Justin Wilson.   He did the same with Nathan until thankfully he got injured and Soria took over.  At least they are only stuck with K-Rod through this season if he doesn't work out.  I was hoping he would give us some consistency in the closer spot but unfortunately he looks like a continuation of the Nathan and Valverde roller coaster.  His velocity is shot so his changeup is not fooling anyone.

With Alex Wilson coming back at least there are options unlike the past.   Can use Alex in the 7th and rotate Lowe and Justin depending on the lineups.

If Pelfrey get's his walk's under control he could be in for a career year
He really has been decent in two of three outings.  Pelfrey takes the blame for yesterday, but with zero run support it really ain't on him.  We don't need him to be great, just a guy that gives us a chance to win.

Going to be tough when you put on 13 base runners in 5 innings. WHIP actually went down to 2.18

Man Pelfrey is a hot steaming pile of garbage. Going to end up being the worst free agent signing I've seen since they tried to march Jose Lima out there and parade him as a legitimate starter.

Pelfrey probably would have had to take a minor league deal had the Tigers not signed him.   Then when they offered him 2-17 he must have felt like he won the lotto.  Most teams would rather go with a young inexpensive 5th starter that has some upside.  Looking at Pelfreys career numbers and it is tough to find any upside in the signing.

I assume you are just talking starters, because the Tiger's record at signing relievers has many worse signings.  Pelfrey is putting a lot of guys on, but he is also pitching out of jams, keeping the ball in the park, and getting a lot of ground balls.  WHIP is terrible, but he is doing pretty good in several other areas.  Maybe it is just luck and it will catch up to him, but I will remain somewhat optimistic he can be a decent number 5 guy.  No doubt they overpaid for him.

If he keeps this up he may give Mike Maroth a run for his money in the single season loss column.

His ship will right itself routine is stale.
Ausmus seems like a good guy..like he would be a great bench coach that the players buddied up with to ##### about the manager.  As the manager he seems to have a very weak personality...not just from this season but since day 1.

Sure is easier than firing most of the team. Time to call up Lloyd from Toledo?
I am thinking they give Brad at least until Memorial Day.  If he gets canned, Lamont would probably be the choice to manage for the rest of the season.  He is familiar with the players on the Tigers roster and there is no need to disrupt the Toledo team midseason as well by taking their manager.

Brad has already proven in two full seasons he is not up to the task.  I like Brad, but this team is headed in the same direction as last year's train wreck. Had the best team in baseball two years ago only to get swept.  Pretty bad when the opposing team's crowd gives your move a standing ovation.  Don't know I ever seen that happen before.

Brad may not be helping, but I continue to scratch my head when he is isolated as the problem.  This team isn't going to win if 3/5 of the rotation has an ERA > 5 (none of which are Pelfrey), the closer sucks, and the the two best bats have an ops below 600.  It's just easier to scream fire Ausmus than it is to tell J Up to stop sucking.
