I missed that game and did not see the Upton play. Some of it has just been bad luck, either lack of run support or defensive errors. It is frustrating that when he pitches, it seems like it will be a loss. He has been better of late. Still only 4-8 when he starts and 1-6 when he is the pitcher of record. His 1.71 WHIP is concerning.

Just think where this team would be if they added productive players in place of Lowe and Upton.
Heard an interesting piece the other day on the MLB Network that Cespedes actually was very interested in returning to Detroit for basically the same deal he took from NY when it was getting late and he was not signed. Then the Tigers signed Upton and Cespedes went back to the Mets.

Pelfrey stinks, I think we knew he would going in but he's stunk less lately. I still think he's a better option than Boyd or Anibal, and Greene looks terrific in the pen so far. Not ruling out a Greene return to the rotation but we have a need there. With him, JWil, and K-Rod that's a good back end IMO. What they can't do is have these starters going 5 innings and leaving the pen in the lurch. The less heavy lifting on the bullpen the better.

Could tell he did not have it last night. There was nothing on his pitches.
Sometimes I don`t get why managers just don`t go against the grain and make a change to try and get that last out. K-Rod was struggling and threw 33 pitches. After 15 it was obvious this was not his night. Why not put in a fresh arm to face Garcia and get out with a win.

It is easier for managers to stick to the formula. Setup man pitches the 8th. Closer pitches the 9th. That is the easy button where fewer will second guess you.

Ausmus screwed up in the 12th by not walking at least one batter IMO. Playing the infield in there is not the right decision, put guys on and have a play at every base and your infield at normal depth.

Avila better be joking when he says no trades at the deadline. I don't have a problem with the options for the rotation but the bullpen is a ####### mess again.

Why would another team pay anything meaningful for Moya?
Unless another team offers a deal that can't be refused for Jones I think trading him would be silly. If anyone on the current roster gets injured then there really are no alternatives on the farm to replace them. Jones isn't ready, but he could be one of those possible alternatives next year when injury and ineffectiveness inevitably hit. Could he flame out? get popped again for drugs? Sure, prospects are gambles, but they're also cheap gambles.
Brad continues to get skewered, some by his own doing, but his hands are tied because there is no depth to replace the injured and ineffective pieces on the major league roster. Stop trading it away for band aids.

Unloading what little there is on the farm to chase a title will put this team on the Phillies/Astros track. No need to create a half decade suck hole when this can be a bridge period, where if things break right then we could be in contention but even if things don't then it's not like we are unwatchable and with no light at the end of the tunnel.
If this team is going to make it to October then all of JV, Zimm, and Fulmer need to be very good over the next 3 1/2 months. Someone also needs to take control over the #4 spot in the rotation too. But, who? Norris is struggling in AAA, Greene hasn't stayed healthy as a starter, Boyd doesn't appear there yet, Anibal is lost, and Pelfrey is Pelfrey. If one of those guys flips the switch then we also need the starting 9 (mostly) to stay both healthy and effective, since there are no alternatives ready on the farm. If those things all happen then a bullpen piece or two could put this team over the top, but what are the odds of all of that happening?
If this team is anything at the deadline it should be a seller. I lean towards not doing that since the players that have positive market value can be starters for this team next year, but if another team wants one of them bad enough. Sure, maybe.

The owner actually bought into selling last year, but they won 74 games vs. the 82 they are on pace for this year. They need to either get better or worse, right now they are in limbo land.

If you're looking at the worse route who do you think makes the most sense to move? Looking up and down the long term contracts, nothing sticks out to me. Unless the team doesn't plan to re-sign JD. Not sure how I feel about that though.

I like JD as he is still young enough to be part of the future core. The guys we could get rid of due to age/contract are going to be the hardest to move.

It would be ridiculous to sell. They've had one bad stretch which has lead to their mediocre record. They are tremendous on offense and with JV, Zimmerman and Fulmer have 3 starters to make it through the playoffs. The central is mediocre and their best hitters Miggy is exiting his prime and VMart and Kinsler can only fight Father Time for so long. They signed Upton and Zimmerman to make a run, if they expect to limp into the postseason with the hodge podge assembly of crap relievers they have they'll regret it (again) and it will be the end of the window for sure.

I think putting Greene in the rotation would be a bad move. I think he is a 4th starter type (maybe 3rd starter upside). His stuff is much better suited in his current role as a setup reliever. I feel good about Greene and Justin Wilson setting up K Rod. The rest of the bullpen obviously has to be better but the back end is solid in my opinion.

Fulmer is already past halfway to his previous IP max. I haven't read anything about an IP limit yet, but I'm sure internally there is one. So, who is going to start all those non-JV/Zimm games to get us to October?
All you need to do is get about 10 games over .500 to win the division. I hate the idea of some arbitrary inning limit. Just keep his pitch count in games reasonable and skip a start once a month.

If you limit his pitch count per game then you're asking the bad part of the bullpen to do more when they already are needed too much to cover our issues with the #4 and #5 starters.

Not really.
His FIP is 2.63 and his BABIP and LOB% are ridiculously high. He's striking out almost 10 an inning and he's not giving up hardly any homers at all, he's had quite a bit of bad luck is all.
I do agree they should stand pat though, maybe pick up a cheap reliever of some sort for a lower level prospect. They are either sellers or dollar store buyers IMO.

The innings limits aren't necessarily arbitrary, there is a long track record and thousands of examples to use when they are looking at innings. What the Tigers will likely do is skip him when they have a day off and use the other guys on normal rest, or spot start someone in his place every few rotations. It's not like they'll shut him down in September if they are in the hunt, there are other ways to skin a cat.

I agree with you about expecting positive regression related to BABIP and LOB, but it should also come with negative regression regarding the HR rate.
Overall, I was getting encouraged after the Louisville game as the K:BB ratios were finally coming together and he was consistently getting deeper into games, but that progress has stalled some the last two times out. Crossing fingers the next 2-3 turns go better then maybe bring him up for a start or two before the break to see how things translate.

Who the #### says Fulmer can't make it through the playoffs?!! You are ridiculous! Look at the Mets last year with DeGrom, Syndergaard and Harvey coming off of TJ. This team is built to win and win right now. The window is gone if they stand pat or sell because the pen is straight garbage. What are they going to sell without eating contracts? The MLB playoffs are kind of a crap shoot, you need to get there. The central is wide open. You are full of #### or just plain stupid if you think they can't make the playoffs.
