***Detroit Tigers thread: 1st pick yet again, this is not fun*** (1 Viewer)

Well this is just silly now.  Verlander hasn't been hit at all in a month and a half and the Indians have 4 homers in the 5th inning!  They are a juggernaut.

Verlander today reminded me of Patrick Roy`s last game with the Canadians when he was lit up by the Redwings.

Again, they can't blow this team up and I'm not sure they should anyway.  They do need to get a little younger though so here are the guys that have value in the trade market:

1.) Ian Kinsler: He's owed what is left on his $14 mm salary this year but has a very affordable $11mm price tag next year, and another affordable $12mm team option in 2018.  Teams that could maneuver to get him as their 2Bman would be crazy not to try

2.) Francisco Rodriquez: K-Rod is super cheap at $7.5mm this year with a $6mm team option next year.  If they go in sell mode, this guy has a lot of value for his track record, playoff experience, and low cost.

3.) Cameron Maybin: He is cheap at $8mm a year and has a team option for '17 at $9mm.  Quite a bit of value here with a relatively young and cheap CFer who still has another year of team control.

4.) JD Martinez: Signed a 2/$18.5mm before season and is a FA in 2018.  Because of the injury he's probably a better candidate to move in the off-season, but even though he has a lot of value it's hard to see trading this kind of bat.  Probably a hold.

5.) Victor Martinez:  $18mm a year for the rest of this year and the next two.  If he were dealt Tigers might have to eat some contract to get good prospects back, but there is also the possibility of trading him for lesser prospect talent just to get his contract off the books.  Another issue here is he is likely an AL only player, which reduces the number of teams who might want him.

No reason to even talk about Castellanos, Iglesias, or Moya because they they have so many controllable years left at a low cost, these are exactly the guys you want to keep around.  Also not gonna talk Upton or JZimm as they are in the first years of big deals.  JV and Miggy aren't going anywhere, not only because they are extremely productive players with huge salaries, but also because these guys will continue to butts in seats as long as they play.   Just from a business perspective, they need to stay as long as they can still pick up a bat/ball.

I had the pleasure of melting in the heat yesterday to watch that cluster#### of a game.

I am all in on moving Victor and Kinsler if they can get a good return.  Not only does the team dump their salaries but they are perfect "sell high" candidates given how they are playing and their respective ages.  The others on your list I would keep.   K-Rod is a cheap contract and the others are young players with affordable contracts.  Keep them and let them develop.  Supplement them with the current young crop of players and whatever other prospects we can get for Kinsler and Victor.  That way, it will be more of a retooling than a full rebuild.  I can see Ilitch going down with the ship though and not wanting to sell any players before the trade deadline.

Tigers are still getting 35K a game on most nice nights so I highly doubt they will get rid of anyone.

Still trying to figure out how contracts get so out of hand like the Pelfrey deal. Pelfrey at best should have been a one year deal like Fisters at 5-7..ends up 2-18.  When Victor was an FA he was an AL player only with a small number of teams with interest.  At first V-Mart was seeking a 3 year deal around 15 a year.  Ends up 4 at 18 a year. No AL team would have went that high or long on an aging DH who had missed two full season out of the last four with knee injuries.  I like V-Mart but that deal was crazy.

As an Indians fan, I'd be willing to kick the tires on K-Rod. Bryan Shaw and his rubber wedding band have been meh this season, but our pen could use an upgrade. I don't know what you'd get from Antonetti in a deal, but I'd be interested in looking into it.

Vmart signed his deal BEFORE last season. Did you know he'd only play 120 games? He had played 145, 159, and 151 games three of the previous four years. 2012 was a lost season, not sure about the other full season you are talking about.

You are correct..he was hurt after the new deal and not out for the year but it was a wasted season.  Just meant how did a 3-45 turn into 4-70?

Can JaCoby Jones play second base?  It looks like the Tigers have him playing third base and centerfield in Toledo.  If the Tigers move Kinsler, maybe Jones could slot into second base for 2017 and beyond.

SS to 2B isn't as easy as SS to 3B, but all you have to do is learn the pivot and get the feel.  If Kinsler was dealt I think Jones would definitely get his first shot at 2B.  He's gotta 32% K rate in Toledo though, so he has some work to do.

I can never remember being somewhat disappointed in a 6-3 homestand.

As of right now they are just 1.5 out of the wildcard, let's see how these last ten games before the all star break go.

Unless they sweep the Rays a 6-4 trip would be a success.

On another note why can`t Miggy or Victor  time their home run trot to hit third base in stride?  They always hit first and second perfect yet when they come to third  they stop and sidestep to get to the base.

i was kind of busy, and stopped watching after the two out pop-up fell for a three run double.  Anything interesting happen after that?

Not a fan of how Brad set up this rotation going into the All-Star break.  They should have moved JV up a day so he'd get the Indians on Wednesday, and then another start vs the Jays.  Now he just gets one start vs the Jays.

Tigers can't beat the Indians.  Should just pitch Sanchez and Pelfrey and not waste a good pitcher.

Great team effort today so far.  Defense, offence, pitching.  Kinsler, Iggy, Moya, Rondon, and even Pelfrey all made big contributions.  Let's close it out.  Seems Brad wants to make things interesting by letting Ryan pitch.   :scared:

Big seven games coming up between two of the teams that stand in our way of the playoffs.  Maybe be lucky if we take one from the tribe and split with the Jays.   I hope we do better.

Much better setup this time vs. last time. This time the Tribe's pen is gassed and we don't have a loss scheduled for game two of the series.
