Deuce McAllister-RB- Saints Oct. 24 - 11:36 am et

Josina Anderson of My Fox Colorado cites an NFL source who claims that there has been a "rash of positive tests" under the steroid policy.

Saints Deuce McAllister and Will Smith were two players included in group of six to ten. The NFL source claims the positive tests were the result of players taking "water pills" to lose weight, but water pills also contain a masking agent for steroids. We hesitated to post the story because Anderson is on her own here and the story is far from certain. However, she has been out in front on similar stories in the past. The players would be subject to a four-game suspension, but the case could already be under appeal if true.

wow

"The Herd" says that Chris Mortenson confirmed this story and says the numbers testing positive could reach double digits.

he isnt suspended yet. nobody knows when and if. quit overreacting, people.
If memory serves, this was the same reporter who broke the Travis Henry story last year. Henry never got a suspension despite the fact he failed the drug test and everyone knew he failed it. Not saying the same thing will happen here but I think we do need to hold off a bit before we start jumping to any conclusions about Deuce and what may happen.

Would be great if it wasn't "could be" suspended. I would hate to drop someone for Thomas and have nothing happen.

From the article

“There are about six to ten overall positive tests. Three to four of them are from the Saints organization alone including McAllister and Smith.

The source told Anderson there were no Denver Broncos players that were a part of this group.

McAllister and Smith are in a group of players that have tested positive specifically for a diuretic known as Bumetanide. Some of the players in the group of six to ten tested positive for a different substance.

"Most of them tested positive for Bumetanide," said the league source. "The last few tested positive for another substance that works similarly.”

Experts at the Mayo Clinic describe Bumetanide as a drug belonging to a group of medicines called loop diuretics or “water pills.” Its uses include the treatment of fluid retention and swelling caused by medical conditions such as congestive heart failure, liver disease, and kidney disease.

However, the source told Anderson that Bumetanide has another use which makes it one of the NFL’s banned substances.

“[bumetanide] can also mask the use of other drugs or steroids.”

Dr. Norman Smith, the lead physician at an internal medical practice in Maryland confirmed this assertion to Fox 31 Sports.

“Bumetanide makes you excrete a lot of salt and water. It dilutes the urine and makes it very difficult to test for illegal substances. There are some patients who use or abuse it where weight is critical,” Dr. Smith said.

Weight loss is the main reason the highly-placed league source identifies as to why this group of NFL players tested positive for this drug. “It seems to be clear that most of these players were doing it to cut weight.”

When the source was asked how they’re more confident these players used Bumetanide as a weight loss agent as opposed to a masking agent, the source replied, “I know that a few of these players have had weight issues.”

The source also suggested some of the players may not have known Bumetanide is on the NFL’s list of banned substances.

“I don’t think many of them are attempting to cheat, or even know it is on the list. We are talking big guys who have likely never seen a steroid in their life. My understanding of the steroid policy is that it was intended to catch cheaters or people using performance enhancing substances to gain a competitive edge. These guys don’t fall into that category,” said the source.

Regardless, all of the players in this group of positive tests, including McAllister and Smith, are subject to a suspension pending an appeal to the league. Under the NFL’s steroid policy, a player’s first positive test results in a four-game suspension.

Others outside Saints org too.

============================================================================

There has been a "rash of positive tests under the steroid policy as a result of players taking water pills to lose weight," FOX 31 in Denver reported on its Web site, citing a highly-placed NFL source.

Saints running back Deuce McAllister and defensive end Will Smith were among the positive tests, according to FOX's Josina Anderson.

"There are about six to ten overall positive tests. Three to four of them are from the Saints organization alone including McAllister and Smith," the source told her.

Those two are in a group of players that have tested positive for Bumetanide, a diuretic frequently used for weight loss, but also for masking the use of steroids or other drugs.

"Most of them tested positive for Bumetanide. The last few tested positive for another substance that works similarly," said Anderson's source.

Dr. Norman Smith explained to FOX 31 Sports how it would work.

"Bumetanide makes you excrete a lot of salt and water. It dilutes the urine and makes it very difficult to test for illegal substances. There are some patients who use or abuse it where weight is critical," Dr. Smith said.

A highly-placed league source maintains weight loss was the goal. "It seems to be clear that most of these players were doing it to cut weight."

"I know that a few of these players have had weight issues."

The source suggested some players may not even know Bumetanide is a banned substance in the NFL.

All of the players who tested positive are subject to suspension, though they can appeal. Under the NFL's steroid policy, a first positive test results in a four-game suspension.

The real question is how long could this take to go into effect? It clearly sounds like Deuce is going to get some kind of punishment here.

These guys are elite athletes working out hard all the time. Why would they take a water pill to lose weight? I'm sure it was not to mask something....

REPORT: MORE THAN 10 OR 15 PLAYERS TESTED POSITIVE

Posted by Michael David Smith on October 24, 2008, 1:20 p.m.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen is reporting that the rash of positive tests under the NFL policy on steroids and related substances may be even more widespread than initially reported.

According to Mortensen’s report, which aired on SportsCenter, the number of players who tested positive is actually “more than 10 and may exceed 15.” Mortensen also confirmed that Saints running back Deuce McAllister and defensive end Will Smith were among those who tested positive.

ESPN credited Josina Anderson of FOX 31 in Denver for being the first to report the story.

Attorney David Cornwell told Mortensen that a number of players have retained him to represent them in the appeals process. He declined to name those players or say how many players he will represent in positive drug test appeals.

Just pure speculation / instinct....but, I think this isn't likely to change the landscape significantly. Deuces value increased only in the absence of Reggie...which is the next 3-4 weeks. Given the number of players involved and lines of appeal already forming, I would be surprised if a suspension occurs before Reggie returns.

I think Thomas / Stecker owners are not going to get to cash in on the Reggie absence.

It's one thing if you cheat, and win like the Panthroids did several years back. The Saints are last place in the NFC South, and Bush is hurt. They should just save the water pills for next year.

betcha ten dollars Duece appeals the suspension (if any) and Bush is due back before the appeal is heard

As we saw in the Travis Henry case last year, an appeal can drag on for awhile. Add in the fact there are multiple players likely to appeal and my guess is Deuce plays the next few weeks.

What remains to be seen is if it will impact his play by being a distraction.

Up to 15 players? :bag:

It's like throwing a rock at a bee's nest -- the FF world gets turned upside down on a Friday morning. Corporate America just lost half their workforce.

That's assuming the team doesn't take action. That seems to be the trend Plaxico - for AttitudeLJ- for Attitude plus He man women haterWinslow - for telling the truth when he was told not toHolmes - for the luv of weed

I am sure that Deuce was prescribed a medical steroid for rehabing his knee. It stays in your system for a mighty long time. I can see him winning an appeal if there is action taken against him.

If Deuce losses the appeal it could be 4 games. He will play in London. He took a banned Diet substance.

Stecker will get the majority of the Work without Deuce and Reggie and PT will get some looks. Just remember though, 4 games does not make a season. Bush and Deuce will both be back and your WW pickup will return to the WW fodder it once was.

Enjoy the points while you can get them

PS Stecker will be the Goal line Back with some Mike Karney. Pierre has already failed in short yardage situations.

thinking the same thing, why would NFL players want to lose water weight? These guys aren't wrestlers.

On my way home from work, I was listening to Sirius NFL and they said Deuce came into camp overweight. Some coaches fine players $100 per pound per day. So if someone is 268lbs and should be no more than 250lbs, reducing water weight would help them get to that goal faster and save them $$$ while doing so.
