Dexter - Showtime (1 Viewer)

This is what I am guessing will happen with the new GF.

The show is def a watered down version of the great seasons 1-4 but that was a high bar.
How would you compare it to seasons 5-8? IMO, it's on par with those. But to me any Dexter is better than a lot of other shows, but maybe that's just me.

I honestly don't remember too much about these.  I was streaming these rather than once a week and I do recall that last season being a bit of work to get through and I wouldn't have kept watching if I hadn't watched the rest, kind of like Sons of Anarchy. The one with Tom Hanks kid was the only one I can even remember a thing about.

1-4 for me were really, really great. In my top 20 or so for TV shows I think.

This new incarnation is good enough for watching 1 every week or so, stream a couple in a row. I'm cautiously optimistic it will stay out of grind territory.

How did the Sister make it through all of these seasons?  She's so annoying, terrible actress and not Hot.   She ruins the show for me.

She was married to Michael c Hall. That probably helped.

I don't know that she's a bad actor but her character is really annoying, even more annoying as a ghost IMO.

So far, this season is definitely better than the 'dexter falls in love with deb' and the Hannah seasons. But those are pretty low bars.

I basically agree with this.  It has been entertaining and I still like the Dexter idiosyncrasies that still remain.  Glad it's back and look forward to the season unfolding.

Jennifer Carpenter is definitely not a great actress by any stretch of the imagination, but she did a good job of playing Deb on the original series.  She had great chemistry with MCH.  If that was because they were married for a bit, okay, but whatever the reason, the great chemistry was clear, IMO.   She always held her own in the scenes with Lundy as well.  Her role as Dexter's Dark Passenger, though, brings out Deb's most annoying qualities.

Agree with everything you wrote here.  I'm sticking with New Blood because what else am I doing on Sunday night, but I think they've leaned into some campiness (Deb especially) that wasn't there in the initial run.  It doesn't seem to take itself quite as seriously.

[PREDICTION - POTENTIAL SPOILER - DON'T READ IF YOU HAVEN"T WATCHED ANY EPS OF NEW BLOOD]

My prediction: Dexter dies in the last episode and becomes the new ghost Harry, guiding Harrison who will be the protagonist next season.

SPOILER - SPOILER - SPOILER

I was thinking something along those same lines as it is shaping up to have Harrison with some of the same traits as I think he saw the drawings and figured he had to do something to stop the other kid but definitely doesn't know how to accomplish it quite right.  So Dexter becomes the mentor and then the dark passenger could be a nice transition to the "New Blood".

I was hoping Harrison was really like Trinity's grandson or something and Dexter would have to kill him.

I jumped to the end of this because I just started watching the original series.  I'm at 4-3 or somewhere around there.

I'm really enjoying it, but remember hearing it falls of quickly. Any idea how close to the edge I am?

I go with this and think it's pretty much the consensus.

You are at the peak!

Tom Hanks kid season was decent think that was 7. The problem was the repetition.

Still enjoying this current season. Def worth a weekly watch, has had a couple facepalm moments but is entertaining if you know the series.

They've set it up for a decent finish in 4 weeks. It could go a few different ways.  All things considered it's a pretty solid season.
Yea im really enjoying this season.  I wasnt expecting it to be this good. i kind of hope they continue it.  If for example dexter is killed off, have Harrison take over?

Also i wont spoil it.  But man that last episode has a scene that is sooooo awesome.  Dexter trolling had me on the floor 😂

Once Dexter just openly starts ignoring the "code", and just starts wanting to kill people because they're inconvenient to him...

Oh, oops, sorry current season

Good episode.  I will admit it, I can't wait to see how they wrap this season up.  No way do they kill off Dexter.  I think they likely want to keep open the possibility of another season and Harrison carrying on his legacy would be a snoozer.  That young actor is doing a pretty good job in his role, but doesn't have the on screen presence to carry a show like Hall does.  What will be interesting will be to see if they leave it open-ended or if they end it in a way where if there if there is no more, it is satisfying.

People on Reddit are saying the ending is “internet breaking” i have no idea what this means.

"Harrison" ( the one who showed up) is not really Dexter's son. The podcaster is his secret girlfriend and turns a profit on his killing sprees.

He's a copycat hunting down serial killers like Dexter did. And Dexter is on his list. To be the new King, you have to kill the old King.

Dexter is wounded and needs help and has no one left. He finds out Cody and Astor were killed by "Harrison" in a reveal. The Sheriff can't find Dexter and has a new team of serial killers on the loose so she calls Bautista, Quinn and Masuka for help to start the next season. The Sheriff's daughter finds out she's pregnant with "Harrison"'s baby

if this is real put it in spoiler quotes.  if its not, damn good writing.

Minor spoiler below for anyone who has not seen today's episode yet...(I saw it On Demand this morning)

I am glad to see that they tied up a certain angle this week (which was inevitable anyway), and can now focus next week on Angela closing in on the truth about Dexter.  I have a feeling this ends with either Dexter or Harrison killing the other.   If I were a betting man, I'd bet on Harrison using the gun he got for Christmas to kill the man who gave it to him.  I always thought the original series needed to end with Dexter either getting a) outed AND arrested or b) dying.  Him getting outed and arrested in this mini-series won't have a dramatic impact as we aren't as invested in the current characters (vs had he been in the original with Masuka, Batista, Quinn and others finding out).   His death feels like the most logical conclusion at this point.

Haven’t watched today’s yet so got to tread lightly in here. Last week’s though with the car crash and that whole deal was pretty terrible. I have been enjoying the season more or less so was hoping it wasn’t making the turn into Season 8 territory.

I agree with you. I think it goes something like this:

I think there will be a scene with Angela, Dexter, and Harrison that will be reminiscent of the Deb/Dexter/Laguerta scene. Angela will be about to arrest Dexter. She’ll probably have her gun drawn on him. Then Harrison walks in and initially points his gun at Angela, wanting to save his dad. But Dexter knows how killing Laguerta impacted Deb, and he doesn’t want Harrison to have that same fate. So he pleads with Harrison not to kill Angela, telling Harrison that he can’t kill her because she doesn’t fit the code. Dexter is begging Harrison to “follow the code!” which prompts Harrison to kill Dexter instead (because Dexter fits the code).

Also, I’m so thankful for that original crappy ending now. As much as I hated it at the time, if the ending wasn’t so terrible, we would have never had this fantastic season. I really hope my prediction is wrong and they keep it going.

I'm a few episodes behind, but:

Kurt: It was my Dad

Police: Oh, ok. You're free to go.

Don't bother asking about luring the young podcasting woman to your underground bunker in your unknown cabin in the woods and totally dismantling it a day later.

and

Harrison overdoses on drugs at a house party and intentionally breaks the arm of an opponent.

"see you at practice tomorrow!"

This is network TV drama bad. I'll finish it out but its been a struggle getting through it.

Not a big fan of Dexter killing Logan
At first I thought he was just unconscious. They could have left it at that but I suppose it showed that Dex had turned the corner.

I'm not sure why Harrison had to bolt town? Could have said it was self defense. He could have stayed and made baby's with Audrey.

Was an excellent season but not overly happy with the conclusion.

As someone who also spent time reading the books, this series finally helped me understand others who complained about series translations.

After the original writers left after season 4, it was clear they didn’t understand him. This season redeemed the series to me and I’m satisfied with this season’s ending.

It was a pretty good season. I didn’t really buy that the case against him as the bay butcher was so strong that he’d kill a good man. Also unsatisfied that Harrison’s arc to normalcy required him to shoot his father dead with a shotgun… good luck with that. Unclear how the evidence at the scene can support an officer involved shooting, as called in. Decent entertainment value though.

I felt it was almost a great ending. I think it would have been better if Harrison would have stayed and accepted responsibility for what he did and got help. What life will he have now? He’ll still have the ‘dark passenger’ and no one in his life.

As for the babies with Audrey, I think there’s a good chance that already happened if there’s any continuation of the story in future seasons or a spin-off.

I know they're talking a little about Harrison getting a spin off, but, if he's rejecting Dexter I'm not sure what the character's story is going to be.

Me either but it was necessary and i think that was the point.  They had to turn the audience against him.  I liken the end to a drug addict:  he relapsed and passed the point of no return.  Basically he oded.  He had the kid watch while he did his work to Kurt.  He couldn’t see Harrison was traumatized by it.  He was absolutely spiraling like a dug addict relapsing after years being clean.  He was losing control.  i think Harrison made the audience realize he’s not the hero we love anymore.  And he now fit the code.  There wasn’t going to be a clean way out unless it ended how it ended especially once Harrison called him out on everything.  I get the hate but i thought it was a good ending.  Brought closure.  And of course left it open for a new show with Harrison.  Maybe dexter plays the Deb role?  We see dexters prequel in him?  🤷🏽‍♂️

i also suspect things were cut short likely due to covid so they couldn’t draw it out as i would have liked.  I would have enjoyed seeing Bautista and him meet again for example.  Or how the town reacts to everything that happened.  I enjoyed the season.  Happy they brought it back.

That was the one big ball drop with the finale. They teased a Dexter/Batista face to face reunion and it never happened.

How did the books differ?
The first book is the first season. After that, none of the stories aligned between the two, so if you like the series, it’s akin to getting another set of stories.

In the books there isn’t a Harrison and instead Cody is the “should or shouldn’t I teach him the code” kid with tendencies. Dexter in the books really leans into emotions as his mask alone ; he feels nothing and all emotions are faked. He also explores the source of his Dark Passenger in the books, and while he talks about it in the series, he’s so in his head about why and where this thing came from even more so.

Dearly Devoted Dexter (2nd book) probably had my favorite book villain - Dr. Danco, a lunatic surgeon who tortured victims. The third book (Dexter in the Dark) is the one that goes into what the Dark Passenger really is.
