Dexter - Showtime (1 Viewer)

I saw an article with an interview of the writer (who also wrote S1-4), who indicated New Blood was a one off and there has been no talk of doing anything further. He said he would be interested down the road if something were to be considered. But as of now, all quiet on that front.

I get turning the audience against Dexter. But doing that with 15 minutes left of the 9th season felt like a copout (no pun intended). He stuck by his code this whole time and I understand having his son there changed things but to blatantly kill a good person like that felt cheap and not the Dexter we watched for 8 seasons. Bottom line, he got a lot of innocent people killed as collateral damage. They could've had him killed without killing Logan. Would've made the ending more debatable IMO and not so clear cut. Dexter's killings were always debatable IMO.

Well, killing Kurt's kid early in the season didn't totally stick with his code either. He never had the real proof, and it was a more emotional kill than he usually does.

He stuck by his code this whole time
Not really. He was going to kill the podcast girl for no reason at all. Just because she maybe said something he couldn't prove.

He abandoned the code by season 4. A lot of the killing after that was random bloodlust, not by the code.

The way to extend the show is to make Michael C Hall the new "ghost" and to have a new older actor ( one more of a brand name) to play Harrison.

You could still infuse Bautista, Masuka and Quinn into the story line again. IIRC, Tom Matthews is also still alive on the shows timeline.

Another way to bring back this current cast is to have Angela Bishop be pregnant by Dexter and have the daughter also be pregnant by Harrison.

Something that no one discusses much is that Harry was Dexter's tether to the "code" and wanting to keep Deb safe was the rest of his tether after Harry died. Once Harry and Deb were gone, there was nothing left to keep the Dark Passenger from spinning out of control.

A more interesting spin would be if Dexter went overseas and become a type of military contractor. He could rack up "kills" in a way that would be seen as acceptable and lucrative.

You can "pause" chaos, you cannot silence chaos. This is where Dexter made a massive mistake in this small town. He needed a constant environment where he could keep killing people he could justify in wiping out.

One of the things the show didn't cover is the kind of lust that the Sheriff and the blogger would have for Dexter. There's an unspoken but realistic issue that nearly all women actually love men with a high capacity for violence. Not violence towards them and not deviants, but men who are capable and take charge and solve threats quickly. Why did Angela Bishop wanted Dexter so badly? She thrives on drama and chaos. It's in her inherent nature.

The show never really covers the perverse attraction most people have towards cold violent efficiency.

Laguerta, though not his kill, I believe would have become a deviation from the code if Deb had not shot the gun herself.

Yep. Plus, didn’t he rage kill someone early in S5 when he was reeling from Rita’s death. Cannot remember exactly since I rarely rewatch that season.

Well, he stuck a pen in the neck of the guy who killed Deb in the interrogation room. But to your point this was not a guy who evaded justice yet.

The show aired yesterday. Maybe dont come in the thread until you watch it?

yeah, I guess I "asked for it"

so your premise is that everyone needs to be completely caught up (within a day ...) before entering a thread?

that's the entire reason the spoiler box was invented

From another site. Some of these are pretty sketchy, but he's definitely killed outside the code before, even if you give him a lot of leeway on the "Don't get caught" part of the code.

Esteban and Teo Famosa: Two drug dealers who were (probably) about to kill Doakes. Dexter kills Esteban off-screen with bare hands (probalby by snapping his neck) and then shoots Teo in the chest with Esteban’s pistol with Doakes’ help, saving him. Altought they would have almost certainly kill Doakes (he was a police officer and they were drug dealers) and they had probably killed before, they weren’t confirmed murderers. No remorse from Dexter.

Season 3 (3):

-Oscar Prado: A drug user. Dex surprises him fighting with his intented kill (Fred ‘’Freebo’’ Bowman), who was Oscar Prado’s drug dealer, and Oscar attacks Dex with a knife; He stabs him in the chest in self-defense. Remorsful.

-Nathan Marten: A pedophile and sexual abuser who was spying on Astor and had probably targeted her. Dexter strangles him to death with a garotte to protect his family. No remorse.

-Camilla Figg: A friend of Dexter who was dying painfully of lung cancer and had asked him to shorten her suffering. He finally agreed and fed her a poisoned pience of her favorite dessert key lime pie. No remorse.

Season 4 (1):

-John Farrow: A convicted rapist. Tthinking he was a serial killer, Dex decapitated him with a cleaver. It later turned out Farrow’s assistant was the killer, not him. Remorsful for a short period.

Season 5 (2):

-Rankin: First actual innocent killed on purpose in an non mercy killing by Dexter. Rankin insults him before gooing in the bathroom of a small store. Dex grabs an anchor and follows him. He tells him his wife just died partially of his fault and Rankin responds by ‘’talking ####’’ about Rita, wich enrage Dex. Seeing he is about to assault him, Rankin attacks first. Dex repost and beats him to death with the anchor. Apparently no remorse.

-Stan Liddy: A corrupt ex-cop investigating illegally on Dexter and Lumen. After seeing them dump what looks like bodies in the Gulf Stream, he kidnaps Dex and ties him in a van. When Dex frees himslef, Liddy attacks him with an knife but Dexter turns it on him more or less in self-defense. No remorse.

Season 6 (2):

-Norm: A pot grower and dealer. After he finds Dexter’s knives and revolver, he tries to extort 10,000$ from him (by pointing the revolver on him), thinking he’s rich. Dex grabs a pitcthfork and stabs him in the belly. He was under the influence on an hallucination of his brother Brian and imagined him kill Norm. No remorse.

-Alberto: An immigrant smuggler on a boat that picked up Dexter. He starts robbing the immigrants with a pistol and Dex has nothing on him. When he maltreats a pregnant woman an treatens to kill her because she has no money, Dexter impales him throught the stomach with a harpoon. No remorse.

Season 7 (2):

-Hitman hired to kill Isaak Sirko: While searching Isaak’s house, Dex surprises him dooing the same. They struggle a little and Dexter slits his throat. Alltought he was a hitman, it is unknown if he had killed before or not and he was there to kill a murderer, so he was not a comfirmed murderer (of innocents). No remorse.

-Clint McKay: Hannah McKay’s abusing father who knew she killed a man (and probably knew she had killed more and was still dangerous) and treatens to turn her in if she doesn’t give him monney. Dex stabs him in the chest on his boat to help Hannah. No remorse.

-*Maria LaGuerta: Altought he didn’t managed to kill her (but only to cause her death), Dexter planned to kill her because she had discovered that he was the Bay Harbor Butcher. He chosen to kill her over leaving the country with Harrison and Debra partially because it would have destroyed her, but mostly because he liked the life he builded there and didn’t wanted to leave. No remorse.*

Season 8 (2):

-Andrew Briggs: A thief who was in a relationship with a deppressed Debra (who was in an undercover opperation to turn him in). Dexter disrespected and hated him and at one point, he attacked him in his hotel room (in Debra’s presence) and when Andrew tried to grab a knife, Dex took it and stabbed him in the belly. No remorse.

-Debra Morgan: After she got shot (partially because of him) and became vegetative, Dex unplugged her and abandonned her body in the ocean. This was a mercy killing. Remorsful for beeing partially responsible of her gettint shot and vegetative, but apparently not for killing her.

Well, that guy he stuck with the pen, Oliver Saxon, definitely fit "the code," although I am not sure provoking the guy and then stabbing him in the neck in plain view of the prison camera is a surefire way to not get caught.  The scene right after that is one of the few bright spots from Remember the Monsters?  When they see the footage, Quinn gives Dexter the sideways glance with his eyes like, "I always knew it about this guy," but in that moment Quinn was so happy that Deb's shooter was dead that he didn't care all that much about being right about Dexter all along.

It was a lot better when the spoiler box worked now you have to avoid everything

Yeah, gotta side with joba on this one. I spent 20 minutes trying to figure out how to Spoiler that kill list, and couldn't get it to work.

Either way, it should be a given to not wander into a thread about a show the day after its finale, as you know people will be talking about it.  Go check out the threads when Breaking Bad and Sopranos ended. No one was using spoilers then either.  Hell, I watched the finale Sunday morning On Demand when eating breakfast and avoided even looking at Twitter for fear there'd be a trending topic like "DEXTER DIED" or something like that, and I wanted to avoid all spoilers if possible.

I’m starting Dexter from the very beginning and now 6 episodes in. I just finished the episode where the ice box murderer allegedly dove 100 feet down in the sea to retrieve a body that Dexter dumped in order to set him up.

Please tell me this show gets better.

I'm actually doing the same thing and stopped right about where you are. So far, it just seems like a crappy show from the USA network.

Are you saying this is an issue because it is unbelievable? If so, then yeah you should probably stop now. I mean up until that point it was totally believable that there was a blood spatter expert working for the police department that was moonlighting as a serial killer taking care of killers that the law let go. I mean that is totally believable.

But it gets really good first.

Season 4 is the peak. After that it's all downhill, and really quickly after Season 5.

Why wouldn't it be? A number of nurses have been convicted for killing their patients. Why couldn't someone affiliated with the police department?

More about the manner in which he takes care of what he does. There isn't enough time in the day to do what he does and still function on zero sleep.

Man, you guys have no imagination. It's very entertaining and gets good through the trinity killer and Jimmie Smits. But the last couple seasons are kind of sub par and the finale was terrible.

I dunno. It's not a believability thing for me. It just seems kind of dull. I don't care about any of the characters. His sister trying to make homicide, whatever. His drab co-workers, blah. I can think of a dozen amazing storylines that could use the setup of a cop really being a serial killer, and none of them involve another serial killer leaving barbie dolls in the guy's freezer.

I get that it might get better. But I'm just tired of shows where you have to wait for this to happen when so many other great shows can be amazing from the first episode.

Wow, never seen anyone not describe Dexter as amazing from the first episode. It may just not be a show that connects with you then. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

First four seasons are outstanding, no point in watching anything after that (although Edward Janes Olmos and Tom Hanks son were great as the Doomsday Killer in season 6 although everything else about the rest of that season sucked.)

I would definitely suggest at least finishing the first season. I will say that I really never liked or was interested in the supporting characters for the most part, though I watched the whole series and liked it for the most part because of Dexter and some of the inherent moral questions.

The sister was just an unbelievably terrible actor. She single handedly ruined it for me.
I could see thinking the character was annoying, but I don't think Jennifer Carpenter was terrible by any means in her performance. Not saying she is Meryl Streep, and I haven't seen her in anything else to make a comparison, but I think she did a good job on Dexter. I would say to not let the flaws of the character taint your view of the actor's performance.

I found her very annoying and cheesy, but I assumed that was the point so as to drive home how naive she is to her brother and why he remains close to her.

In other words, I didn't blame the actress because I assume she was playing the character as written.

I recall a lot of acting criticisms of her early on in season 1 but I agree, i think the character is supposed to be annoying and insecure and stuttering starting out. She’s much more confident and consistent in the later seasons when her character gets more confident after the things she goes thru. I never had any problem with the acting on this show, now the writing on the other hand after season 4, holy moly…

This should tell you something.
Not really, because I don't watch a lot of stuff in general. (but the stuff I do, I tend to re-watch and know really well)

Yeah, Seasons 1,2 and 4 are all all-timers, with 3 being very good as well. There are plenty of good moments and episodes in the later seasons, but the consistency was long gone. I did find it still watchable till the end, though, largely because MCA's performance as Dexter was always so phenomenal, even when the writing wasn't great.

I watched like the first two episodes of the "new" (or 9th?) season on Showtime. Didn't hate it, but we pared down our streaming services. Is it worth continuing to watch? I'm assuming no because I haven't heard anything good about it.

It is, yes. I am not saying it is as great as the early Dexter seasons, but it's a much better ending to the Dexter story than we got in the original series. I won't say anything else, but I think much of the criticism is for a very specific reason (I cannot say, as it would be a spoiler).

Yeah, which is a shame because I thought young Hanks did a really nice job with his character and at some point Dexter had to be caught. But, likely you said, holy moly on the direction the writing went. So dumb.
