Why is this a surprise? Lovie drafted him #4 overall. In fact, the head coach is the only friend he's got on that team...
Actually Angelo drafted him #4. But Lovie has a soft spot in his heart for players from Texas and Oklahoma. If the headcase known as Cedric Benson is named the starter, Lovie Smith is going to lose half of his team.
...and I welcome it.
Lovie Smith has REALLY pissed me off this offseason:
> Getting his agent to start chirping about extending his contract (been there done that with #### Jauron - sorry champ... WIN a playoff game, and then earn your extension)
> Running the SOFTEST training camp I have ever witnessed
> Going along with Angelo that the Bears didn't need any WRs or TEs this past NFL draft or in free agency.
The scary part is the Bears still might succeed DESPITE THE FACT GROSSMAN HAS NOT ENGINEERED ONE TD DRIVE THIS PRESEASON.
They play the easiest schedule and face first time head coaches in EIGHT games.
Lovie played at the University of Tulsa, for those that wonder why Grid said that above
That may explain why Grid would say it, but still doesn't make any sense.
Especially the "head case" part of it. That is nothing but unwarranted speculation. As soon as Benson starts ripping off strings of 100 yard games for GRID's beloved Bears, Benson will suddenly become the most mentally-stable person on the planet.
There is nothing that warrants calling Benson a 'headcase'?You have GOT TO BE kidding me. He skips out on the team during a preseason game, then skips the post-game meeting, and he apologizes but doesn't regret anything. Calling it a 'learning situation'.
He goes out of his way to say he doesn't need his teammates to be friends with him. Would anybody actually say that if they were a
highly paid new employee at a company, knowing that all of their coworkers would catch wind of it - and also knowing that they basically were AWOL for the first year?
Bears players may outwardly say they have no problem with Cedric Benson, but trust me... they know that Thomas Jones was working hard to get back on the field last year - as the playoffs were on the line. Yet Benson was taking his sweet time, even when the training staff said he was cleared to play two weeks prior. Players remember that kind of stuff.
It'll all be proven this season though... time will tell.
Much like many of you, I'm tired of talking about it - and I want the REAL season to start.
It'll be interesting to see if Lovie/Angelo have the Bears offensive starters play more than a 'couple of series' this week, as they are one of the few 'first stringers' in the NFL that has yet to score a touchdown.
