Dion Lewis (3 Viewers)

3. Lewis is arguably more talented than any RB on that list other than Dillon.
This is a pretty ambitious statement for someone who most people didn't know existed until he had a good week one. Why can't we just say "he's doing really well, and if he keeps doing well there's no reason to think belichick will go away from him"? Or "he's playing as well as any back since Dillon"?Fwiw, Blount is pretty talented too. Not elite. Not nearly as shifty. Different kind of player. He plays a role the Patriots like to use and plays it well. Sometimes they'll use one more than the other. Sometimes they won't use the backs as much, sometimes they'll use them both a lot. It looks like Lewis has earned playing time even in pass heavy schemes. That's enough for me.
It's the world in which we live.

Everything has to be black or white.
Saying "arguably more talented" than all but Dillon is black or white? If you say so. But you are painting with a broad brush here.

I could be wrong, I am simply stating my opinion, and I even qualified it to say it is arguably true.

IMO it pays to be decisive with your opinions on emerging players when you play dynasty. That doesn't mean I am always right, but I have missed too many guys when I waited to see more evidence. He passes the eye test for me in a way that the rest of the names on that list other than Dillon do not.

By the way, shhh, don't look now, but Danny Woodhead is currently tied for 6th in PPR scoring. Perhaps being "just" the next Danny Woodhead isn't quite such a bad thing after all...

From a market value check perspective, turned down yeldon and a 3 for him in a ppr dynasty prior to week 4 kickoff. Could still regret it but man does he look shifty and yeldon looks solid but unspectacular thus far

I'm a CJ Anderson owner. Why in the hell would you even consider that.

keep in mind the Chargers were down 2 or 3 starters on their offensive line so things are only looking up, especially if Floyd or S Johnson or out for any extended time.

woops. Wrong thread LOL

He's in and staying in. Lynch, Demarco, and Lamar miller can platoon my other spot.
Yeah, he's s no brainer over those guys. I'm debating keeping him in over Foster alongside Charles. Feels like Dion is safer, but Foster has a much higher ceiling. Agonizing.

Getting too much into an assistant coach post, but just wanted to point out that I think Dion is a top 10 ppr back the rest of the way.

Yes he is, crazy how fast guys fall out of relevance.

Well, to be fair, that list isn't a shocker. Lynch's age and chronic back..it was going to happen at some point. DeMarco was clearly a product of the awesome O-line plus Dez and Witten and Romo. I might be in the minority but I've never thought much of Miller.

:goodposting: on every point

Starting Blount and Lewis in all league I own them. Dallas has a lot of players coming into this game off suspension or injury. There defense might improve from what we've seen. But the reality is Brandon Weedon is their QB and the Pats are gonna have a few extra possessions.

So happy the bye is over and I can plug this guy back into my lineup. Saints' RBs caught 13 passes against Dallas last Sunday night. This could be a huge game for Lewis coming up.

Agree on every point except Demarco. He is being severely misused for some reason. I think (hope) that changes this week.

But Miller sucks. Always has.

I tried to offer CJ plus a 2nd rounder for him after week 2... it did not get a reply. (Dynasty)

In my leagues it seems the owner wants to sit on him and find out what he really has.

A guy people compared to Barry Sanders in 2009 you mean? I think you need to give Dion a little more credit, even if YOU had no idea who he was, plenty of other people did. I will paraphrase BB in saying, "Dion Lewis was no secret."

I drafted him a month before the season started, but I wont flatter myself and say that I knew what I had. I looked at all the 'backs on the Pats and took a shot at the one I thought had the best chance at filling the Vareen role but also carry the rock - basically hoping that an RB could consolidate the two roles. I didn't think it would happen, but if it did I thought Lewis might be that guy, and I got lucky with the guess.

I think most of us had a little bit of knowledge and a lot of luck - but you'll see many saying it's the other way around. How many were yelling at the top of their lungs before the preseason? Not many. Just be glad you got him.

(This isn't directed at you, Real. Just the overall reaction to so many who "knew" about him before others. You might be one of the exceptions. I have no idea :) )

Not sure how many of my fellow Eagle fans will agree but this pre-season he has given me a Westbrook feeling when he was a rookie. The way he's looked this pre-season makes you wonder why he fell so far in the draft.
I got that feeling as well. Have to temper it a little because it was 2nd and 3rd string last night but he looked good. He wasn't just trying to burn people. He was patient behind the line and waited forthe hole to open. He angled off the blockers well and turned losses into gains for the times he was caught behind the line. Reminds me a lot of Warrick Dunn. I think he makes the team. Bye bye Eldra Buckley.
Good comparison. Kind of limited in FF though. If he were on the Colts or Some team like that, he would be my 2nd most favorite dynasty rookie RB stash.
In reply to the post above. This is from 2011, bumped to illustrate that I think there WERE people that knew all along what was there. It just took him getting to a team that could use him properly to bear fruit.

Go back to page one of this thread an you will see a good handful of people saying this is the player they saw.

I don't know how much that is worth. This kind of hype happens from multiple people for pretty much every rookie. Always has, always will. Some will be correct, most will be wrong.

I loved Leonard Hankerson in 2011, I guess that means I am awesome now that he's playing well in 2015.

In today's world, you're right. Give it enough time and everyone who wears an NFL uniform will have a hype thread at some point. But it wasn't AS prevalent in 2011, although it could very well have been then case. But in this particular instance, my point was if people will go back and re read the early days of this thread, they will see it backed up by some good observations by some of the guys and a lot of that has come to pass.

I understand completely. I like Lewis now and remember the buzz back in '11, it's part of the reason I was quick to snap him up after week one rather than consider him a one week wonder, which he could still turn out to be (or three week wonder as it were).

Sadly I agree. I think it is setting up for a repeat of last week though. Good day for Lewis but may get to rest early.
Here's hoping that the Cowboys can keep it competitive thoughout. We MIGHT get a surprise. IF Lee plays, they also get Hardy and "Ro" McClain back. Maybe, just maybe, the Patriots get a fight. If the Cowboys could somehow score a few points early, the Pats might be more inclined to keep the pedal down.

At any rate, I expect a better fight than what the Jags gave them.

Also I hate to say it and certainly don't mean to invoke any bad omens but this Patriots backfield would change on a dime should anything happen to Blount or Gronk or Eddelman. Any significant injury to any of those three players would shift a TON of work towards Lewis.

Wasn't directed at you or anyone in particular, just more of what I was hearing from seemingly every owner in Leagues at work, at the bar, etc... :)

But since you put yourself out there in response to my post - I'll ask you directly the question in my previous post - were you one of the ones touting him this preseason? If so, nice job. If not - well, we all jump on rookies that look good coming out of college. It's an entire different story to know when they will blow up years later and during which opportunity. Genuinely curious - no snark here.

I was. Pages 4-6 on the thread I was lobbing for buyers. I do have him in all but one of my leagues.

With that being said, I don't want to suggest I did anything special or knew anything different. I spend a lot of my fantasy time studying value. I play almost exclusively in dynasty so a lot of my posts and comments are on buy and sell stuff. As I was studying Lewis, I was simply doing what a lot were wondering about in regards to that pass catching RB role for the Patriots.

I had always liked Lewis a lot (as my old, old post suggested) but what really stuck with me was his time in Cleveland. In training camp and that pre-season game that year, he looked all-world. I thought he was going to steal that job as unlikely as it seemed at the time but then he got hurt. For me, It was recalling that point in time that clinched it for me for New England.

@FieldYates: Filed to ESPN: the Patriots have signed RB Dion Lewis to a 2-year contract extension through the 2017 season, per a league source.

@FieldYates: Lewis' deal: $600k signing bonus, base salaries of $800k in '16, $1.2M in '17. Can earn up to $1.8M in incentives from 2016-2017.

Just sayin

Well, that pretty much says what they think of him. Money talks. I'd say the risk of him vanishing into the ether after a fumble or two in place of James White just pretty much disappeared.

Why I love the Pats. Adding value to guys' careers. Guys that move on too. A credit to the league. Where'd Woodhead be? Benny got a pretty good deal w/CIN.

It's good news for Lewis owners but they're not exactly breaking the bank to keep him.

Looks like Blount is on a 2 year that expires in 2016 with a value of 1.73 mil with 865k guaranteed.

The contract looks designed to dump him if he ends up falling back to just being mediocre or continues to fumble. Both of which I don't expect to happen.

I like the extension and think it's a positive for Lewis' value, but there's not really that much money there. Good for Lewis to parlay a futures contract in December into a million bucks in October. I'm sure for a guy who's been living on the fringes of the NFL for so many years, any form of stability comes as a huge relief. And I think the Pats got him on a bargain because we're only three games in, and maybe he's not willing to take the risk of waiting to the offseason, (where he could surely get more, provided he stays healthy). But this is a pretty low-risk move from the Pats' standpoint. That's barely over the veteran minimum. There's no real barrier to them moving on from him at any point if they feel like it.

I don't think they will. I think Lewis is The Goods, and they just got themselves a nice low-risk bargain. But the extension isn't moving the needle much for me on his long-term value. A tiny bump up, but we're still where we were yesterday- betting on the fact that he's really as good as he looks.

Think about this contract in constrast to the FA deal Vereen signed with NYG...why the Pats are the Pats.

I don't think they will. I think Lewis is The Goods, and they just got themselves a nice low-risk bargain. But the extension isn't moving the needle much for me on his long-term value. A tiny bump up, but we're still where we were yesterday- betting on the fact that he's really as good as he looks.
I like it for Lewis. Putting money where the mouth is says a lot in what the Patriots likely think.

Yes, it's a great deal for the Pats and I guess Lewis probably had to take it. If he didn't and got hurt, that would suck for a guy that finally "made it". Or if the pats went away from him and he was a FA next offseason, I'm sure a lot of potential buying teams would have wondered if he was just a system guy.

But overall, I like the move. It's not a massive contract but the guy is now doing pretty good in life after a shaky start. Good for him.

I think the point is this guy didn't come out of nowhere, like some WW WK1 fools gold like Kevin Ogletree. A lot of people saw good things in pre-season. Of course its not a sure thing but the signs where always there talent wise, the big question was and still is usage although that is becoming more clear now. He always had talent, but opps were few being drafted behind an elite talent at the time in McCoy, then bouncing to horrid teams in evaluating talent, injuries, etc. He has finally landed a team that appears to give him opps, has fresh legs, is on the number one offense that plays mostly out of shotgun, where he excels ... and is looking like his 2009 self. People may have forgotten about him, but he was highly touted at the time he was drafted.

A guy people compared to Barry Sanders in 2009 you mean? I think you need to give Dion a little more credit, even if YOU had no idea who he was, plenty of other people did. I will paraphrase BB in saying, "Dion Lewis was no secret."
:goodposting: I don't know what boston guy is talking about. i knew about him in preseason even though he didn't play a lot and even drafted him in every league
How many were yelling at the top of their lungs before the preseason? Not many. Just be glad you got him.
I watch all the condensed games each week when I work out. This guy was sticking out like a sore thumb. Wont profess to be an expert but I did profess his potential before the season started.

He could make an impact. He has rare, elite balance/ankle breaking skill and adequate power/speed and good hands/catch. Very compact. Deceptive power, adequate for nickel/dime sets where he will be facing mostly. Also Pats tied him up in 2014 after the injury thinking they would tie him up for 2015. Didn't play in final pre-season game. He's in the plan.

Gushinghistory/story/narrative while watching his 40+ carry game. Pretty much every play went to him.

So far he is taking it to the next level. he is like Vareen in pass catching but can also run way better than Vereen did between the tackles, hence no need for the Riddley aspect or the other dude they cut that runs inside, Jonas Gray. You can also see cadet and White are not in the picture for anything but a backup role.

I have seen this guy compared to Barry Sanders. I didn't want to mention that myself but anyone who thinks he cannot carry the load needs to watch some of those links I posted and realize he carried 46 times in that Pitt game.

Put yourself in BB shoes. If you have a versatile guy that runs "like Barry" and can catch like Vereen what have you got? Something special that can be lines up wide or I formation and be effective at both. Why would you put Blount in? Maybe as a hammer with a lead or in put power short yardage situations. Pther than that I don't see where Blount has Lewis beat in skillset for any other situation. BB sees the same I hope.

Could be special player. Great start. P.S. Barry didn't catch like Lewis can so the ceiling is very great with Dion Lewis if given the opps he deserves. I am not saying he runs like Barry, but many others have so don't jump down my throat about the comparison.

Hi. I volunteer to drive the Dion Lewis Hype train through late-night drive thrus so I'm all about him but just wanted to say that while I agree with the design of what you're saying, when you openly compare him to Barry Sanders and then say Barry can't do what Dion does at the end, you're begging for people to tune you out.

But I think you are correct in what you say Dion CAN do and why it works. I would just say "he has a style that IS effective and it reminds us of some dynamic players" That will probably help your point get through easier.
