Dion Lewis (1 Viewer)

To me, this early mid season extention means 2 things.

1) Belichick feels like he's a value to the team for the price they are paying him and he won't find anyone else in the near future that will bring better value

2) Dion either feels like other teams won't see as much value in him in free agency as much as Belichick does or he wants to lock up some guaranteed money in case he gets hurt again, since there's a real possibility he might not be a starter again if he had another serious injury
I would agree with both points, but would further add to #2 that it's possible Dion Lewis feels some loyalty to the franchise that rescued his career from the scrap heap and therefore wasn't looking to maximize every last penny he could get. That's essentially what he said after signing the deal, and it's plausible enough. We've seen guys like Chris Harris and Randall Cobb take a lot less money than they could have gotten to stay in a place that they liked on a team where they knew they fit in.

It cost the Patriots $600k to get to decide if he's worth keeping for $800k next season.

Looks like a combination of 1 and 2.
Ya I meant for the point to come across as a combination of both. Just highlighting the reasoning behind each side and wanted to show that the dollar amount isn't necessarily a reflection of Dion's skill, especially when you're dealing with the Patriots front office.

Looks like a great deal for the Patriots so smart on them. I'm just thinking out loud and the way the Patriots use players (spread it around) I would have a hard time thinking of any players that have improved their value playing for NE (speaking in terms of RB or WR). However, if you're Lewis you realize that the lifespan of a RB in the NFL is short and you can't prove yourself without opportunity and that's what NE isi providing.

Off the top of my head, Blount, Woodhead, Branch, and Welker all improved their value playing for the Patriots.

The Patriots also acquired a 30-year-old Randy Moss for a 4th rounder, then turned around and traded a 33-year-old Randy Moss for a 3rd rounder.

This. It's not a lot for "NFL greats" but to have a life changing sum of money locked up is a smart move after 3 games of play, after all he has dealt with injuries already and that is a legit risk to all players. If he continues to do well he can renegotiate or try the FA market when the time comes if he continues his RB1 pace. Smart move all around for everybody.

Is dion Lewis from the patriots a good pickup?

Yes, he is. New England Patriots reporter Mike Reiss, who knows how frustrating the Patriots' unpredictable use of running backs has been to fantasy owners over the years, said he feels "pretty strongly" about Dion Lewis, whom the team just signed to a two-year extension.

Reiss said Lewis has earned the trust of the coaching staff and is the "new Shane Vereen," who played 52.9 percent of the Patriots' snaps last year as a runner and receiver out of the backfield.

"You know they have wild swings in terms of the snaps that they play their guys. But Dion Lewis is their clear-cut No. 1 passing back, third-down, change-of-pace guy. And that's the guy that really plays the most for them anyway because they're throwing so much," Reiss said. "And it's take-it-to-the-bank solidified that as long as Dion Lewis is healthy, that's the guy. He's not gonna get supplanted all of a sudden by James White. That's not happening. They love Dion."

As for LeGarrette Blount, he is still "clearly" New England's top power runner. But Reiss said, "I'd be more hesitant to invest in him, because the Patriots are more apt to be throwing it than power running. The Week 2 game against Buffalo is a great example. LeGarrette Blount took seven snaps in the game. I find it hard to believe there will be a game when Dion Lewis plays seven snaps."

FYI: Just traded for Blount for those JAX type games still to come. Blount had 3 1 YD TD runs in that JAX game ... prolly get a few more this year ... will be nice to flex him against smaller/weaker run defenses along side Lewis at RB2 so in blowouts I can still get a nice score with lewis resting alongside Gronk on the sidelines. it also mitigates risk if Dion gets hurt. It cost me Crowell in redraft league. I feel like Crow looked good in his last game but I'd rather have Blount in the #1 offense than a slightly more talented younger guy in a CLE offense. Also I am somewhat disappointed with Crow as he was slated for all the work early in the season, was not impressive and is now stuck in a timeshare and the "other guy" is catching all the passes.

Might be a good idea to grab Blount if you own Lewis. It wont cost too much and Lewis was practically free for most of us that got him before season started..

Yeah, I'm starting them both this week in one league where I'm playing one of the lesser teams so far this season, I want a safe floor so I figured I'd guarantee myself all the Patriots RB points. Anyone who isn't an underdog, that might be the smart play if you don't have clearly better options.

Did you see that run after catch? Who other than Barry Sanders (and Dion Lewis) takes that in? I am serious. Somebody screen capture that before he jukes 4 guys in the span of 5 yards and he basically only went straight. he is freakin surrounded. No way anybody else in the NFL gets that in from that position. NOBODY!

:jawdrop:

His earlier run to the half yard line was equally impressive. We are witnessing something special, that only comes along once every 25 years or so. Glad to be on board this train early. He is untouchable after this game.

That was very Barry Sanders, little Dave megget, reggie and shady and sproles on good days. Gio maybe. Definitely a type of play that you don't see from many guys

Lewis is a reliable PPR stud right now.

Has he ascended to a top 5 running back in terms of a ppr dynasty asset?

RBs I would rather own right now in PPR Dynasty:

Bell

Gurley

Freeman

...

Lacy?

RB is pretty thin at the top right now.

One play can showcase all his skills. Here are a baker's dozen set of screenshots with commentary on the best Dion Lewis play so far this year, and there have been numerous others. Owners rejoice on getting a top5 PPR back with the last pick in the draft! Mr. Irrelevant proves that groupthink in FFB still leaves value to be had, even with the numerous FFB scouting sites out there, nobody saw this coming. :towelwave: well a few of us did. ;)

Dion Lewis looks like a nice pickup for blokes in PPR. He sure was fun to watch at Pitt.

@MikeClayNFL

Just now on @SiriusXMFantasy - @E_Scal told me that Dion Lewis has won the Patriots passing-down RB job. Must-own in PPR.

@MikeClayNFL

New Dion Lewis projection: 56-220-2, 45-364-2 - Top 50 RB in standard, ~Top 40 in PPR. Go get em.
regardless of what happens the rest of the way, thanks one. A reminder of why this place is awesome
:moneybag: :hifive: :moneybag:

Now if only the pats faced any kind of real competition that kept up with them all game long.

Then Lewis would get enough touches to be a rock solid every week rb1. They only give Blount a lot of work to ice the game.

Eta: which is usually by the 3rd quarter.

Had Lewis 5th and Freeman 6th before this week's action. Jamaal Charles' knee injury pretty much guarantees they're both moving up at least one spot from there.

First of all, I am totally vested in Dion, but I think the comparisons are a little off. One of the things that I like most about him are that his shoulders are almost always square, almost like a much bigger back would be. The back he reminds me most of is Emmitt Smith. Smooth, almost always moving forward, shifty, but not crazy like Barry. He is a slightly smaller, maybe better catching/reciever type Emmitt Smith.

He's already a rock solid every week RB1

The reason he is going to keep racking up consistent fantasy points is that he is a perfect BB player. He is that guy that can line up in the backfield, or in the slot, or wide, BB loves multipurpose players. They can run uptempo and leave him on the field because he can do so many things. He is a perfect BB player.

I play in a standard league so he's still feet but less appealing and less of a week to week sure thing in that format. Should have said that.

Remember watching him at the combine and his change of direction ability was just jaw dropping. Good to see him healthy, getting the opportunity and thriving in his role. His TD move today just reminded me a lot of Marshall Faulk. Fun to watch him set guys up.

Coming up this week is the Colts and this week I'm tempering expectations a bit. I love the kid and drafted him in all my leagues i truly believed he was the guy but if i have learned anything from watching the pats vs indi games past few years is that the colts CANNOT stop the run. I can see blount getting 20-25 carries and going for 100+ yards. I don't know where lewis will come into play as i defiantly see him getting his but in ppr I'm looking at maybe 15 points total. If he gets anything more it will just be icing on the cake.

I think he's a always start your studs guy vs colts. NFL is just too hard to predict. Daniels should have gone off vs raiders right? Denver rbs should have been able to do something. Julio should have had 5 tds vs Redskins right? Even the experts don't call a whole lot right. Talent wins out.

Lewis ran with more more power today.
