Disney Vacation (3 Viewers)

Anyone use the Undercover Tourist Disney app? I leave in 5 days. :pickle:
I use the Lines app from Touring Plans. I use their crowd calendar and per park calendars to plan our trip and then use Lines when I'm there and want to know how long the line is on a ride at the other side of the park. I am guilty of just randomly looking to see how long the wait is on various rides when I'm wishing I was there. Enjoy your trip!!! Only 3 months to go until our Sept. trip and 5 months for our Nov. trip. I can't wait!

Flying in on Sunday, the 3rd and leaving on the 11th. Our reservations are 'Ohana, Chef Mickey's, 50's Prime Time, Boma, Sci-Fi (son loves it), Hollywood & Vine, Via Napoli, and I think the wife booked another I can't remember. Dole Whips, Turkey legs, and 9 days of fun. Can't wait.

How much money do you guys normally spend when you're down at the park for a week? :unsure:I didn't realize that I had to send away for a special reward card for my Disney dollars so the payment for our trip is due today and I can't use the $680 for the payment because it will take a week to get the card out to me. :wall:
I thought I read in the CC Rewards pamphlet that there were kiosks in the park that could convert your rewards credit? I guess I was wrong? let me look into that, we leave in >20 days  Edit: not sure we were talking about the same Rewards card? I have a Disney CC that gives me rewards=$1 Disney for every $100 spent. We put the vacation on it so I have a decent amount of rewards credit I can claim. As for $$ spent? We'll see. This is my first trip w/ a dining plan, so obv that will save a lot of cash I normally would have had to have on hand. We also had our parents and some other family give our kids Disney gift cards for christmas and birthdays. Our 5 yr old daughter has close to $250 in gift cards that will save me from shelling out mucho denaro.

Just back yesterday.

4 days in the parks with some first timers...had a great time.

Finally got to ride Rock n Roller Coaster...very nice.

Weather was crappy most of last week...hot and a lot of rain in the afternoons. No the usual 10 minute shower either.

Still got in everything most wanted to see.

One highlight of the week was my daughter screaming and crying as we got off the River Rapids "I WANT TO RIDE AGAIN!!! I DON'T WANT TO GET OFF!!!"

Other highlight was seeing Kevin Green and his Super Bowl Ring up close.

Glad someone in the group was wearing Packer gear or we might have walked right by...his wife was the one who spoke up (he was lagging behind a bit) and showed her necklace with the Super Bowl pendant...then he came up and showed off the ring. Very cool. If only I had grabbed one of the kid's autograph books. His signature would have looked good on a page between Goofy and Pluto.

Thinking about planning a trip for sept with the dining plan special. Worth it to use one of the travel agents out there or just do it all myself? Are we too late to get decent reservations for character places if booking now?

We were down there around the same time. Lots more rain than I expected, but I think it was better than sweating the whole time. We may have missed out on some fun at the Hotel, but I have to say that renting a house seems like the way to go. Dirt cheap ($1000 for a 5BR), private pool and hot tub, and some respite from all the craziness at the parks.

That is what we had too.5BR house and a pool. Nice neighborhood I could run in on the offdays.Would have liked a more covered pool rather than just screened roof...but it worked out fine. And thankfully the rain usually held off til the afternoon. The only day it may have affected us was missing out on some princess encounters at Epcot...but we were about to head out that night anyway to rest before the parade and fireworks that night since our first choice for those things was rained upon earlier in the week. And got a bit drenched for a few minutes Friday heading from Toy Story Mania to Rock n Roller coaster.

We have always done it ourselves. Only thing we couldnt get was Le celier but we walked in for lunch with no wait.Character dining is not as bad as some of the upscale places. Many times we have been able to get last second reservations for Crystal Palace and Princess lunch in Norway. Cinderellas castle is a little different but just keep trying and you may get in. My wife was actually able to add 3 people to our reservation there this past December the day of by just going to ask.

On the Disney Rewards thing from Chase...we read about it in the stuff we got from the card...then found it when we got there.

In Epcot there is a spot in Innoventions West that is a special Character spot for card holders. You never know who you will get, but they will printout a free 5X7 picture for you. They give you a voucher that you give to the photo people in the shop near the front before you leave...with your photopass.

We got lucky and got Mickey and Minnie together. We had 3 cards between the 10 of us in the family and got pictures alone with each family, one group shot, and one with my parents and the grandkids. Got the 3 free pictures and now have several others on my camera and the photopass.

SOB...wife mentioned that she thought it would be a great idea to take our 3 year old to Disney for his birthday/New Years.

Is 3 year old too young? My kid can't sit through a movie (watching an episode of Sesame Street is too much) without getting bored. He loves to play in water/outside and loves animals.

This whole process feels like something other than a vacation...seems stressful. I hate crowds and I loved this plce when I was in my 20s and obviously a kid, but now even if given free passes I would think twice about going.

This is what I expected too, but instead found it pretty relaxing. We alternated days at the park with days laying around by the pool.

Some people find the planning the best part. (My wife) The trick to the crowds is knowing the extra stuff to do at the right times. We like staying on the grounds to use the extra hours. The amount of stuff you can do with the extra time is worth every penny. Usually can get much of the parks done by lunch. Leave for luch and go to DTD, do activities at the hotel or play golf/minigolf. Mid day is when everyone is at the park. Then after dinner head back to the park with the extended hours, catch the parade or fireworks and then there is usually 2 hours extended time with practically no lines.

There is things for all ages. seems like your kid would love animal kingdom and the water parks.

Just got back with my 3 year old. Her 2nd trip.My son had been twice before he was 3 also.I don't think its too young. Depending on the child's height, he may be able to ride several things. She did the River Rapids (and loved it), but was just a smidge too short for Test Track (like barely enough to get a credit card between her head and the height bar).

I agree it's doable, but making a special trip from OK to go there might be a bit much at 3. Between 3 and 4 was a big difference for our kids. Just depends on finances and if you'd go back later. Like Sho nuff and myself, when your going yearly or every other year it's a bit different.

Nice. :hifive:My parents are taking my son to the Packer HOF today.

What are the best character meals to target? 4y/o girl more into disney shows (mickey/minnie etc) then princesses.

Chef Mickey's would be perfect for them. The "Fab Five" of Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy, and Pluto are generally there. Dinner buffet is decent.

Breakfast at Chef Mickeys or in Animal Kingdom (Tusker House) I think are the core Disney Characters.Though, hard to believe a 4 year old girl would not enjoy Dinner with Cinderella at the Grand Floridian (big props to the ladies dressed as the step sisters and step mother as they did a great job with the characters).

Norway in Epcot does a princess breakfast that is not bad. Was not impressed with the dinner there. 1900 park fair in the grand floridian has a great breakfast with mary poppins, Alic in Wonderland (mad hatter) and winnie the pooh (tigger).

Interesting...we never did breakfast at 1900...only dinner.

They had an omlet station and other items you don't normally see on a buffet. Eggs benedict, some lobster with egg goodness etc.

Going down in October and we have a significant portion of our planning done, and are just were looking into Legoland down near Orlando for a day before we arrived at Disney. They will (should) be opening before we get there. Anyone ever been to one of the other Lego parks? Anyone know of a way to get reduced tix ($65 for adults/ $55 children) at the one in FL?

TIA,

Going to a conference early so taking the family for the first 4 days. I've got a rate at the Contemporary for $200 per night (4 nights), and a 3 day base ticket for $215 each (4 of us). Wouldn't mind picking up a dining plan but trying to save where we can. Is there a way to beat the price I have laid out (approximately $1660)? My wife really wants to stay at the Contemporary, we stayed at Pop Century when we took the kids a few years ago.

Why does she want to stay at the Contemporary? Personally I think it is the ugliest hotel on the property. The only thing it has going for it is the monorail.

Monorail=convenience. Especially with little kids. My wife would like to stay there the next time. I'm pushing for Animal Kingdom Villas. We have only done the cheap hotels (pop century, sports) and Carribean Beach. I would only stay at Carribean Beach if it was dirt cheap. I hated my expeirience there.

Wilderness Lodge was the best of both worlds IMO. They had a boat that would take you right to Magic Kingdom and another that would take you to the Contemporary to ride on the monorail. It was like a 5 minute boat ride over to Contemporary and like 15 over to Magic Kingdom.

Just got back on Saturday (Me, wifie, and 2 kids-5 and 1 yrs old) and I can't recommend the Contemporary enough—Actually we stayed at the Bay Lake Tower which is right next to the Contemp and as close as you can be to the MK. We had a theme park view, 12th floor, that we could see from Space Mtn to Castle and through to Splash Mtn. Most of the nights we watched the fireworks from our balcony to avoid the crazy crowds, plus they pipe in the music through a special channel on the room TV.It was a 5 minute walk from the door of our resort to the entrance of MK, with only crossing 1 street and the rest a private, paving stone walkway that was pretty well lit at night. There were no food places in the hotel, but the 5th floor had a covered walkway to the main level of the Contemp. where Chef Mickey's is as well as a pretty good quick serve and some shops. 1 lv up from that was the monorail. We thought we would use it more, but the route to the MK was around the lake and stopping at the other 2 MK resorts, so we just walked.Pool was great, deep enough to get wet, but shallow enough for the kids, with a good, twisting water slide that I couldn't pry my daughter off of. The also had a nice kiddie area with that fountain-type water spouts for the 1 yr old to run around on. Attached to that was a small beach area, hot tub and a nightly fire pit lit. Between them was a place to rent boats, para-sail and water ski/wake board.I recommend getting a smartphone app that yells you the wait times all over the park. Came in huge when we were moving from attraction to attraction bc we could just look at that and not have to go to each attraction first just to see the fastpass or wait times.

Tell me more about the app.And yes, she always wanted to stay at the Contemporary when she was a kid and thinks the Monorail is very cool. It is convenient as well.

A few random thoughts:

1. Photopass - it's free to sign up whether you use it or not. I am a fan.

2. The Magic Kingdom parade at night is excellent. Must see. It's followed by the Wishes fireworks. A few things...

2a. Grab a spot early by sitting on the curb on Main Street. If you sit on the curb then no one can stand in front of you. You are close to the Exit when all is done.

2b. They sell the "light up" toys everywhere. Cost is about $20 and your kid will probably cry for one because all of the other kids have them. Buy early or take your own glow sticks.

2c. The actress that plays Tinkerbell comes shooting down this wire to the top of Cinderella's Castle to start the fireworks. Don't miss it.

3. If you can afford it, and you have a young daughter - book the breakfast with Cinderella in her castle. After everyone is seated they play "When You Wish Upon a Star", then all of the Disney princesses come out and greet. I have never seen so many adults cry in one spot.

4. Speaking of meeting characters - they will sign autographs and take pictures. Take advantage of this. You will thank me later. Tip...buy an oversize pen (one of those giant 12" pens) and an autograph book from Walmart or Dollar General before your trip. Many of the characters have giant gloves on and the oversized pen really helps.5. Epcot is HUGE. Wear comfortable shoes.

6. Get Fast Passes for all the popular rides. Once you get there send the rest of the clan to the first ride of the day while you run over and grab a Fast Pass. Meet them at the ride.

7. Take a backpack. Who cares if you look like a dork. Pack bottled water, wipes, snacks, etc. Maybe pack a sweater or something if you are going in the spring or fall.

8. Plan some rest time. You will need it.

9. Make sure you see Philharmagic in Magic Kingdom. The line is not bad, and the show is great. I also loved the night show at Hollywood Studios: Fantasmic. Toy Story Mania and Soarin were incredible the first time.

10. If you go to the Indiana Jones stunt show, then sit close and volunteer to be in it. My wife and I have both been picked, and it was great fun.

11. I'm a baby when it comes to thrill rides. The only tough rides for me are Mission Space (Epcot) and Rockin Roller (Hollywood Studios). I did get pretty sick on the Star Wars ride.

12. Last - they have the cleanest public restrooms I have ever seen.
We spent a lot of our time standing in line to do this. I mean A LOT of time and my daughter loved it. LOVED IT. At first I was like what a waste of time but meeting her "rockstars" was awesome.I would suggest even if you think they can walk BRING A STROLLER. My daughter was 4 when we went and a stroller is a must!!!
IMO one of the best spots for this (for the main characters) is the one in Epcot. You wait for a bit, inside, get cartoons, and you get Mickey, then Minnie, Then Donald, then Pluto, then Goofy (usually, sometimes mix in a daisy rather than Pluto). But the wait is usually around a half hour and you get all of the main characters if you have not seen them yet and get to wait in an airconditioned spot with TV playing old disney cartoons.
Where in epcot is this spot?

I use the Touring Plans one for my iPhone. Free app, but req a $10/yr subscription. If you are a verizon customer, Disney has an official app that tells you wait & Fastpass times, plus it uses your GPS to show you were you are in a park and tell you when and where the nearest character's are going to be.

I know inside the cartoon studio - forget the actual name. We got wizard Mickey, Character from UP, Inredibles and Goofy I think. Not sure if that's the same place.

The Verizon app is only for NON smart phones. I used the Undercover Tourist app for Disney World and it was great. It has maps, wait times, ride descriptions with ratings, it also will tell you what dining there is and has the phone numbers so you can call and make reservations. It is a very well done app and I highly recommend it.

Innoventions...if coming from near the ball and going towards The Land...its on the left before you go under the little breezeway.

Tell me more about the app.

And yes, she always wanted to stay at the Contemporary when she was a kid and thinks the Monorail is very cool. It is convenient as well.
Is it for the Verizon IPhone too?

I used the Disney World Wait Times by Phunware, Inc on Android.

Free app...worked well and the line times were pretty accurate based on what the rides would say when we got to them.

I can't say. I'm and AT&T customer, so I didn't bother to look too deep into it. I know Diz and Verizon have a partnership agreement, hence the 'official app" I met someone at breakfast who was using it and really liked it, however not sure what phone he had.

WDW has moved away from random character pop ups and to specific meeting places within the park. Each park has their own locations, i.e:MK: right on main street is a building with all the princesses. THey each have their own rooms. Jasmine and alladin have a spot near the magic carpet ride, Ariel is right at the edge of Adventureland facing the castle, and there is a hidden spot behind the buildings of Liberty Square.

AK: has camp mickey minnie where there are huts set up plus a few other spots.

Epcot has them in Innoventions, behind Innoventons you can meet the Fairies and then in other spots in the world showcase.

HS has them spread throughout the park.

If oyu go up to any parks guest relations, they can tell you exactly where and when characters will be.

No, I went looking for it the other nite when I saw a commercial for it, and there is nothing in the app store. Here is a link to all the phones it works on. Slide down the page and there is the list.

Trip booked with decent reservation times for most, but the two I cant get are chef mickey's and ohana's. Just have to keep checking and hope something pops up.So far we have booked the following - any thing I should add/delete?Tusker house for breakfast (donald, mickey etc)coral reef lunch (not sold on this one - food reviews arent great thinking of picking another epcot for lunch)princess dinner at epcotboma (african)Cape May dinner (seafood buffet)

Not sure if this is the right place but we just went on a Disney Cruise in June. Awesome experience. I can provide a review if anyone is interested.

1. Is it too soon to plan a spring or fall 2012 trip?

2. Am I completely insane to go with four kids ages 5/3/1/1? Assume I would bring one or both mother/MIL to help...

1. Not for Spring if you need airfare.2. Not crazy but plan accordingly. Days at the park with 5 and 3 year old should not be a problem if you don't push them too hard.
