Jackson says he "always feels" toe injury

Receiver Darrell Jackson, acquired this offseason in a trade with the Seahawks, is doing what the 49ers' athletic trainers tell him. Jackson has not practiced running routes with the 49ers this offseason because he is on the trainers' timetable.

But his absence from drills is not entirely just a precaution. His hyper-extended left big toe (aka turf toe) does not seem to be anywhere near 100 percent.

"I feel it," Jackson said. "I always feel it."

When asked if he expects to be ready for the opening of training camp, Jackson said, "I expect to play now, but I'm following their timetable and doing what's best for me."

The 49ers' first practice of training camp is scheduled for July 29.

I don't think it ever completely heals once you get this. It can ok 1 day and hurting the next. Kinda like arthritus.

I kind of thought the same thing at first but couldn't find any mention of Laveranues Coles's turf toe problems from 3-4 years ago. Of course, with any injury, there are probably differently levels of severity.

IIRC, that's what put Prime Time out of the game.

coles decided to play through the pain... i forget if it was the jets (first time?) or redskins that wanted him to have surgery, but he was advised not to because that same surgery ended OJ mcduffie's career...

as long as it doesn't worsen in severity, he looked pretty good last season when he was on the field...

not sure if he takes shots or painkillers...

i read an interesting story (forget where?) in which a rock band was practicing at a stadium in which the football team happened to play... the drummer's back was locked up and he was afraid he wouldn't be able to do the show... somehow he got hooked up with some of the painkillers they give to the players... he felt a lot better & could not only play but jump around... but i'm guessing he didn't feel so good after they wore off...

Thats because Coles is a man about these types of things... I think it was bothering him last yr; He was missing a lot of practice at the end of the season.. I know the Jets classified it as a Knee or Calf injury.. but I bet it had a little to do w/ the toe as well.

Seriously they gave up a 4th round pick for him. Even if it doesnt work out it was still a great move by the 49ers.

He's pretty far removed from this injury and he did put up 4/49 (team best) in the game against Chicago immediately after the injury. I think he will be ok physically. The bigger question mark is how he will perform in the 49er offense. He was very consistent in Seattle, with a TD in 9 of the 13 games he played for them. Not sure how much that carries over to the 49ers. It was difficult to get a handle on how Antonio Bryant would do from week to week last year.

I totally agree..DJax being taken w/ Coles and Plax... I much rather have those 2 then DJax. VD will be the tru #1 on that team.

Turf toes almost never totally heal. Depends on the degree of injury. Most players/athletes/humans will never get back to their baseline. Turf toe can be played through which is what Coles has been doing. You can manage it with rest and pain meds but it is still there. This is a joint capsular injury with no good fix excepts scar/heal/hurt/scar/heal/hurt.

Drummers just don't jump around so that show must've been quite entertaining :banned:

Djax did some running yesterday..

“He went out and did some running and I asked him today and he said it felt good,” said head coach Mike Nolan. “He wasn’t sure how it would feel after running on it, but he said it was okay. I’m looking for him to be out there the first day of training camp. There’s some precaution in what we’re doing right now with him. We really just wanted him here to do the rehab so we knew it was done right, and so he’s been here.”

It's still early, nothing to worry about. He'll be on the field week 1, guaranteed.

Nolan isn't worried, he knows the Niners have depth this year:

Darrel Jackson

Arnaz Battle

Jason Hill

Ashley Lelie

Brandon Williams

I'm curious to see if Marcus Maxwell can finally make the roster this year. He is doing well in the NFLE, but it is the NFLE, after all. At 6' 2" 200+ lbs, he has good size, and some have compared him to a young Terrell Owens, without the attitude. A scouting report on Maxwell, from NFL.com :
ANALYSISPositives: Well-built athlete with solid overall muscle tone and very good linear speed … Creates an early advantage off the line of scrimmage with his explosive initial burst … Uses his hands effectively when releasing off the line to escape the jam … Accelerates in and out of his cuts to gain separation … His foot speed consistently causes defenders to flip their hips … Will push off his defender to plant and come back for the ball … Shows fluid hip swerve weaving through traffic … Has that wiggle needed to shake off the defender up field … Makes good body adjustments on the move, especially when he has to get to the off-target passes. Negatives: Needs to do a better job of reading defenses, as he tends to get stationary when his quarterback is scrambling out of the pocket and the play breaks down … Still learning the proper way to extend his arms and hands to secure the ball and will still revert to trapping it … Shows the ability to stick his cuts, but will still round some, especially when going over the middle … Prefers to stay away from contact in tight quarters … Lacks consistency with his hands, as he'll dazzle you with a big play, then drop those easily catchable balls … Tends to get very sloppy in his route-running and does a lot of dancing before trying to elude the defender … Ineffective coming back for the pass on curl routes and must do a better job of keeping his feet inbounds working the sidelines.

Not much depth though. If Darrell Jackson cant heal and make it back in very good shape, the Niners WRs will have some problems. I look at those WRs outside of Jackson and dont even see a true #2, let a lone a #1.

An update from yesterday's blog item about Darrell Jackson: Nolan said Jackson's rehab is going well. He ran some zig-zags, but nothing that would force his big toe to bend. Nolan said he expects Jackson to be ready for the first day of training camp.

Part of the problem with Jackson is that he was under no kind of rehabilitation schedule with the Seahawks. So from the end of the season until he was traded to the 49ers in April, he received no treatment for his "turf toe."

Yeah, but the NFLE is :goodposting: I don't know anything about him, but hey, if he brings anything it'll be a plus.

Vernon Davis was left off this list, but he's definitely a part of the depth. I also think Delanie Walker could be in for a bigger role with Eric Johnson gone.

Just ask Rohan Davey and Gibran Hamdan, league MVPs that can't even land a 3rd string backup spot here.

Well, except for the fact that they got rid of their #1 WR and #1 TE, so if Jackson can't be effective, their receiving corps will be even lamer than last year.

Just reinforcing what derek19 has already posted. I'm worried about Djax playing, what i'm worried about is his value with Alex throwing to him. I'm really really hoping that hostler will continue what norv set up last year.

Supplemental draft

Posted By: Kevin Lynch | June 15 2007 at 06:51 PM

Team director of college scouting, David McCloughan, will be in Lincoln, Neb., Monday for offensive tackle Chris Patrick's workout. The junior is available for the supplemental draft on July 12.

At 6-4 nearly 300 pounds, the former Cornhusker could be an intriguing player. Patrick, according to Omaha World Herald, is still on the team. But a source with the 49ers said off-field problems are an issue, but wouldn't say what they are.

Another supplemental draft prospect is Georgia cornerback Paul Oliver, who enters the draft after being declared academically ineligible last month. Oliver, a junior, said he would stay at Georgia for his senior season, where he was expected to be one of the SEC's top cover corners.

Oliver works out Wednesday for NFL teams on University of Georgia campus. The 49ers aren't sure the 6-0 205-pounder is fast enough for their purposes. On the Pro Draft Scout web site, Oliver's listed low time in the 40-yard dash is 4.38, and his high is 4.52. The team will send a scout to his workout.

The supplemental draft is for players who are ineligible for the NFL draft because of academic problems or off-field issues. If the 49ers were to use a fourth-round pick on Patrick for example, they wouldn't have that pick for next year's draft.

In last year supplemental draft, the team was interested in University of Virginia linebacker Ahmad Brooks, who some scouts said was as talented as Packers linebacker A.J. Hawk. However, injuries, testing positive for pot and getting booted from school dropped Brooks out of the NFL draft. Brooks was also out of shape during his pro day.

Nevertheless, the 49ers were willing to use a fourth-round choice on him, but the Bengals used a third-round pick for him and he had a wildly inconsistent year. In five games he didn't play at all, in three he didn't make a tackle and in one he started against Tampa Bay and recorded 11 stops.

OTA Friday: This day was devoted to wide receivers. A few made stirring catches including Bryan Gilmore and Arnaz Battle. But the bigger news was that Darrell Jackson ran on Tuesday on his recovering turf toe and felt good. Nolan said Jackson ran "zig-zags" and that the toe responded well. The team will keep him out of practice during next week's OTA's, but Jackson should be ready for training camp July 29. ... An MRI revealed that cornerback B.J. Tucker did tear his pectoral muscle. Nolan said he would miss the season. He'll join defensive end Melvin Oliver, who last week tore the ACL in his right knee, on injured reserve. ... Safety Mark Roman was excused Friday for personal reasons. ... Jackson will miss the last two days of OTA's next week because of a prior commitment.

Are you reffering to A Bryant and E Johnson? That's called addition by subtraction.

How can getting rid of your best WR and TE be good? Especially when the guy that was supposed to replace said WR has major question marks.

But none of those moves were related.Bryant is no longer there because he got suspended and complained about not getting the ball enough.Johnson wasn't extended because they spent a very high draft pick and a lot of money on a great prospect that needs to get on the field more... and from every report I've read looks like he's ready to take over. The Jackson trade had nothing to do with Bryant/Johnson leaving.

Eric Johnson is the slowest TE I've ever seen. Seriously, every time the team got it to him in the red zone he would be stopped short on the line of scrimmage because he couldn't get to the outside.Bryant is overrated, he complains way too much, and he isn't as good as TO to get away with it. I'm glad he's gone, because his attitude didn't help the team. He's still not signed yet, which I guarantee you wouldn't happen to DJax if he was a free agent.

Oh sorry. I forgot the fact that Bryant and Johnson were part of that trade. My bad.

We're not saying that Bryant and Johnson were part of any trade. We understand they were let go, but that doesnt take away from the fact that they were SF's best WR and TEs last year and if Jackson is still hobbled when the season starts, the offense likely wont even be what it was last year. Sad.
