Do people always overreact this badly after 1 week? (1 Viewer)

In the span of 24 hours guys have suddenly turned into "Studs" or "Busts" and people are scrambling to grab this year's overlooked "Breakout Star" from the waiver wire. Is FF really this irrational? Or is this more of a week 1 phenomenon and people will start settling down? What did I get myself into lol.

On a side note, FF has completely bastardized the way I watch football. I catch myself cheering for "my guys" while cheering against their teammates. I was going crazy for Romo when he threw a long TD, but would root against throwing to TO because someone in my league has him on their roster. WTF is wrong with me.

At times people overreact, but when guys like Brees and S-Jax do not perform, people second guess their choices. now is the time for you to read the buy low/sell high thread and try to bolster your team while panic is setting in.

aaahh. the madness that IS fantasy football. Welcome to the wonderful world.

The short answer: "Yes."

The longer answer: The conduct being defined as "overreacting" by you often results in season long difference making. Time and time again I've been in redraft leagues where a week 1-3 move, which appears to be overreacting at the time, propels a team to success. Happens every year.

Yes.

But, with a caveat.

Some of those bust week one players will be busts all year long. Some won't.

Once week one happens everything about your perfect draft goes out the window and reality starts to set in. I've held too long on some and let some go too early.

and other week 1 moves turn out to be huge over reactions...it really goes both ways

welcome to fantasy football.say goodbye to any enjoyment you once had for the sport of football.

I think its best to maintain consistency and overreact 365 days a year, this helps to maintain an even keel when panicking.

Most of it is just people venting. I'm very disappointed in Brees, Bulger, LJ, and various other players. But would I seriously bench them or drop them for waiver wire crap...not at all.

My solution is to have so many teams that nearly every decent player is going for me and against me in various leagues. Then I can focus on the fun parts of FF (drafting, team management) and get back to enjoying the actual games for the games (at least until the FF playoffs).

lol, exactly...Really will forever ruin the way you watch games...It's horrible, yet absolutely one of the most addictive things I've ever done...like I used to say, it's like being on crack...I'm not enjoying it, but I can't stop either.

No, I think it gets worse every year, simply because the amount of (over)analysis increases every year in the preseason. Now that everyone actually has data to go on, the extrapolation, interpretation, and speculation runs out of control.

Ahh...welcome to the insanity. Watching Plaxico catch a 60-yard TD bomb against the Cowboys (my favorite team) would usually make me quite upset under "normal" circumstances. But not so much yesterday when I had him in my starting lineup. So, the only thing "wrong" with you is that you're playing fantasy football.

So, you mean Plaxico Burress probably won't score 48 TDs this year, Chris Brown won't shatter the all time record for rushing yards in a season, and Randy Moss won't get 3000 yards? :goodposting:

Those are zillion dollar companies... they are making money off those products... so you as a consumer have every right in the world to get on thier asses when their products stop working.

Win more. Works for me.

I think the key thing is that you shouldn't necessarily overreact, because for most mortal players (LT and perhaps Manning are the exception), they will have the odd down week. But figure out WHY they had the down week. Did SJax have a bad week because he didn't get enough touches and the Rams abandoned the run, or is he going to bust, especially with Pace gone now? Was the Branch goose-egg a one-time deal because the Bucs decided to shut him down at the expense of the short game and SA tearing them a new one, or will this be a trend? These are the questions I'm asking myself this morning, and I don't have the answers. But the worst thing I can do is panic and sell these guys for pennies on the dollar right now.

BTW, less year I started with Aaron Brooks as my QB, and SJax and Cadillac as my RBs. Brooks and Caddy stunk it up week one, and I had a decision to make. Stick it out, or try something? When I looked at WHY Brooks (seven step drops all day with a pourous O-line, and knowing he's not the QB that can handle that sort of thing) and Caddy (Tampa abandoning the run very early) struggled, I decided to "overreact" and deal Caddy and Phillip Rivers (thank you Chase and your QBBC article) for Carson Palmer, because I had Frank Gore on my bench. That move helped me win a championship, but your mileage may vary. Mostly, I wanted to prove that, yes, folks will overreact, but underreacting can sometimes be just as dangerous. Don't necessarily look at the struggle, look for the reason why.

Such is the fun of this game.

Welcome to the best game on the planet.Short answer? Expect this kind of thing every Monday. On how you watch football, yes, it completely bastardizes football games. Join more than three leaghues and it really won;t matter WHAT game you are watching. You probably have some interest in it. That said, never lose your fan-dome. Not sure who your team is, but mine is the Miami Dolphins. With their horrendous last couple of years, I have found it less necessary to keep the NFL Package this year, but you can count on me watching every minute of a Dolphins game if it is on the air. That said, last year I had the Package and watched it for the best football games, not for my players. I can track my players online. So, you can re-develop a "correct" interest in the game if you can keep the two things separate.

And it would be a neck and neck battle between preseason overreaction and week 1 overreaction. So who is this year's Frisman Jackson?
Ronald Curry , Drew Carter and Shaun McDonald come to mind...
BUY Ronald CurrySELL Drew CarterHOLD Shaun McDonald
Agreed. Well put. Oak has to throw to SOMEONE. Carter benefitted from a scheme to stop S Smith in goalline situations(trend, though?). McDonald is the biggest anomaly here. WR4 on a pass happy team will have a couple of these games, but mostly 2-3 rec with 30-50 yds. Probably finishes with 3-4 TD's.

I follow football pretty religiously (more college than NFL), and my fascination with scheme/strategy/matchup/player development probably borders on OCD. Athought it's my first year playing FF, I think I know enough about football to know when a guy is overreacting. (key word is "think" lol)

I guess i disagree heavily with the above statements. FF has improved my football watching - I know more baout the game than I ever did before. It CAN ruin it, if YOU let it.IMO.

People overreact this badly after EVERY week not just the 1st.

this is pretty good evidence you'll be obsessed with fantasy soon, too! my suggestion, esp. if you are in multiple teams is to not pay attention to your opponent's roster(s) until after the games. it will preserve *some* sanity. and definitely, as others said, watch your waiver wire, for any players dropped due to a bad week 1 performance. people can do silly things to pick up what often turns out to be a a one week wonder....
