If you hired a pilot to aim an airplane for a mountain, you don't tell him to get out of his seat right before impact. You have to see it through. The Chargers would have been better off if they held some sort of a "be coach for a day" contest with SD fans.I would fire Norv tonight but I'm an emotional fan. The Bronco's win and our loss means no playoffs so why keep the #####' on the sidelines?
Yeah, that's really bad. Belichick was a retread. Coughlin was a retread. So was Dungy. So was Gruden. So was Vermeil. You want me to list every SB winning "retread"?Amazing how Pro sports have retreads in the coaching business...Someone tell me what this guys record is overall....Just curious....My Dad is a big Chargers fan and is at the point where he can't stand to watch them with Turner at the helm.
All of those guys had at least some success in their prior coaching jobs. The closest fit on your list is Belichick, and I'd say his 11-5 year with Cleveland is much more impressive than Turner's best year in Washington.Belichick was a retread. Coughlin was a retread. Eh.Would they have more wins? Sure. Would they have the trophy? No.The mistake was hiring Norv. Everyone should know the book on Norv from this one simple thing in addition to his Washington/Oakland head coaching:Chan Gailey helps take Miami to the playoffs twice in two years with Lamar SmithNorv helps Miami miss the playoffs twice the next two years with Ricky Williams at the top of his game and over 2000 total yards by Ricky one of those years.I don't know who San Diego needs to bring in, but I think they'd be well advised to end Norv Turner's head coaching days at season's end. No need to cut him loose early.the mistake was firing Marty, IMO.
#1. O-line has been healthy(and essentially same unit as last yr), LT stated he's at 100% for the last few weeks, so I dont buy injury anymore. If Denver can put their 5th string RB out there and run for 100+ yds, why cant SD? If Merriman is the difference in the defense last year to this year then he is the Chargers MVP if not the league MVP. If the Giants can lose both DE, and still be a force on Defense why give the Chargers a free pass? Outside of that the defense is essentially unchanged.2. Hindsight 20/20 Drew struggled his first few seasons and they thought they needed to upgrade, once they drafted Rivers you were essentially stuck with that choice, the injury to Drew shoulder in week 17 of his last season in SD just made it easier. Team is underachieving, thats IMO is on the coach. Wait until they are officially out of it, and then fire Norv, and start the search for a HC.I don't like Turner, but-1. No running game, can't win. No pressure on defense, can't win. Both of these elements are due more to injury than to anything Norv did.2. You guys made the wrong QB choice when you let Brees go.
But Norv won a playoff game! I guess Football Outsiders was right that the effect of the bad coach shows up in Year #2.the mistake was firing Marty, IMO.
The problem is that they are getting used to Norv, and adopting his "oh, well" persona. In post-game press conferences he always looks like the losing coach no matter what happened on the field. The Chargers have a Superbowl caliber team. They have to be careful they don't switch coaches so much that they spend their window getting used to a new coach(over and over).
HTF was Gruden a retread? Vermiel was 54-47 with an NFC ChampionshipDungy was 54-42 Coughlin was 68-60Norv, with two teams prior to SD, was 58-82Belichick was a retread. Coughlin was a retread. I don't think so. Two years ago, I would have agreed. The Chargers have a Superbowl caliber team. They have to be careful they don't switch coaches so much that they spend their window getting used to a new coach(over and over).
Every year Norv Turner coaches a team, fans of that team end up saying this.I'm as pissed off as any Charger fan, but injuries and a couple of fluke plays/calls have been bigger factors than poor coaching/playcalling this year, IMO.
The OL is the same but they really, really suck at run blocking. Is it the players or the coaching or the play calling? I don't know, but I've never seen a RB get hit so much in the backfield as LT this year. And I'm still at a loss as to why they would cut argubly one of the top blocking FBs of all-time.#1. No other coach with Norv's track record or anything like it gets cut as much slack as he does for "close losses".Losses have been too close this year to fire Norv after the job he did last year. I'm as pissed off as any Charger fan, but injuries and a couple of fluke plays/calls have been bigger factors than poor coaching/playcalling this year, IMO.
This is Norv Turner, it's what he does, it's what he's good at. It's like getting mad at a fish for swimming. No other coach with Norv's track record or anything like it gets cut as much slack as he does for "close losses".Losses have been too close this year to fire Norv after the job he did last year. I really wish the Spanos' would sell the team to a more engaged ownership group (Steve Young and Dwight Clark spring to mind) even if it means moving the team to L.A.Norv Turner gets vote of confidence....

I lived in San Diego for over 20 yrs. so I know a little about the organization. The team ownership is as dumb as a rock when it comes to football, believe me.
Here's all you need to know.
