Jags 2025--Focus on "raising the floor of this football team." To 5 wins? (1 Viewer)

Sorry, Jax fans, for raining on your canopy-less party here. For all we know, this dude could be the surprise cringe-warrior of the year. I hope so for your sake. But then I think about how shady he pulled out of Tampa and I'm like, nah, he's more than likely a complete tool, and the sooner you guys are able to move on, the better.

Full Disclosure: within the last two weeks, I'm pretty sure I made posts in the Raiders thread hoping new Raiders' GM John Spytek (formerly of Tampa Bay) would consider this dude for Raiders HC. But that was before the weasel moves and the Doovalhalla cringe. That said, from one long-suffering NFL fan to another, I fully welcome Lie-ham proving me way wrong and turning your misery around. (y)

Weird career so far. Bouncing back and forth between Rams and Kentucky. The two rams OC's before him, O'Connell and LaFluer, became successful HCs and then he left that job for his old job as OC at Kentucky? Them he spends a year in Tampa. He leverages the Jax job to get Tampa to offer him the biggest coordinator salary ever and then leverages that to get Baalke fired and a payday from Jax.

This same statement can be made about Ben Johnson, but people are praising him as the next great coach. He has the same amount of experience as Cohen as an OC, and arguably comes from a team with more veteran coaching experience and the premier leader of men.
:2cents: imo there’s a big difference when Johnson has been with the lions 6 years, with 3 consecutive years of success as OC. Although Coen did stay with the Rams 3 years, he hasn’t stayed in a spot long enough to actually develop anything. He got the job with the Bucs largely because he had some success with Will Levis, and frankly the Bucs OC job was among the easier OC jobs in the league, with veteran leadership.

It is certainly possible for Coen to succeed but Johnson is more likely to succeed.

Campanile is a NJ guy I've known of for a long time. His high school team was so good and then top in the nation. Then he went to Rutgers and Michigan and....everywhere he goes there's an obvious impact.

Excellent youngish coach

Pat McAfee is more about the jokes bu the does seem connected and can step out and reveal things by pulling back the curtain
Seems that Coen refused to work with Baalke and hen Khan fired him, Coen suddenly thought the Jags were serious and took the job.
I still think Coen might not be the right guy but the Jags seemed committed to him and he's making $13M per year, 5 yr deal

-Sounds like the Bucs think he's pond scum now but most of the fan base myself included thought he was a quality OC. Most Bucs fans envisioned him as the next HC in Tampa
Incredible OC. Wish he’d handled things differently. We’ll see if he can be the head of a franchise.

This is the type of move that I'd generally meet with cynicism, but WTH not? The only time this franchise has been consistently good were the Bo (and Coughlin Vol. 1) years. Why not someone who bleeds teal and whatever other color they'll use next year?

Someone who was at the center of elevating this flaming tire fire of an expansion draft to an AFC title game the very next year?

Jaguars hired Tony Boselli as their Vice President of Football Operations.

Boselli played seven seasons for the Jaguars and is a member of the 2022 Hall of Fame class. The former left tackle has assisted in the Jaguars’ latest coaching and GM search and is expected to form a “football leadership unit” consisting of himself, head coach Liam Coen, and a general manager who has yet to be named. The expectation is that all three will report directly to owner Shad Khan, who is hoping this latest round of front office turnover will last more than two seasons. Boselli has never held an official front office position but has worked closely with the organization for years.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have finalized their 2025 coaching staff, the team announced today.
  • Head Coach: Liam Coen
  • Offensive Coordinator: Grant Udinski
  • Defensive Coordinator: Anthony Campanile
  • Special Teams Coordinator: Heath Farwell
  • Pass Game Coordinator: Shane Waldron

Jags seem to be talking to multiple experienced and qualified candidates for their GM position. If I were being interviewed, my first question would be:

"Mr. Khan, you hired Liam Coen as (first time) head coach, and told him he would report to you. Then you hired Tony Boselli as Executive Vice President of Football Operation, and he too will report directly to you. If I am offered this job, who would I report to, and who would report to me?"

This is, in essence, the "Frank Costanza question"
Rooster, Hen, Chicken

Not sure I follow this. The Jags have A LOT of needs this off-season, led by defensive backfield (cornerback and safety) and interior linemen on both sides of the ball.

If Kirk's contract is reasonable, why would they ditch him and create yet another need? He was a key player on the '22 division championship team, and Trevor has relied on him when he's been healthy.

Citing Gabe Davis as a complementary piece to BTJ gives me absolutely no comfort, as I'm sure Bills fans would agree.

ESPN’s Dan Graziano believes there’s a 75 percent chance the Jaguars cut WR Christian Kirk this offseason.

Kirk has one year remaining on his current deal and is scheduled to make $16.5 million in 2025. He missed much of the 2024 regular season after sustaining a broken collarbone in October, finishing the year with 27 catches for 379 yards and one touchdown on 47 targets. With Brian Thomas emerging as a dominant WR1 and Gabe Davis positioned as a downfield threat, along with a new regime in Jacksonville, could spell the end of Kirk’s run as a Jaguar, Graziano said. He added that Kirk’s contract “is reasonable enough that the Jaguars might be able to get something for him in a trade if he’s healthy.” Kirk, 28, would draw interest from wideout-needy teams if the Jags part ways with him in the coming weeks.

It's hard for me to definitive on an opinion on what the Jags will do since we don't know the GM and head coach without much experience.

But since last year I thought if/when they decided to fire Doug Pederson that they'd cut or trade at least one of Kirk or Engram, if not both. Nothing has changed my mind on that opinion yet.

Keeping this about Kirk and why might he go? Not saying he should, just saying why he might. Possible belief that Parker Washington can be a discount version worth saving $10.5m on the cap would be my biggest reason they might move on. Also possible they might go the other way and actually commit more to the position if Liam is indicating he'd prefer someone like Kupp or Godwin who are available and have had success with him.

Jacksonville Jaguars fail 2025 NFLPA report card, drop from 2024 grading

The Jacksonville Jaguars were rated 18th out of 32 in the 2025 NFLPA's team report cards. It's a steep fall from where they were ranked 5th in 2024.

The NFLPA surveys players at every club allowing them to rate their team based on 11 categories. Players rated treatment of families, head coach Doug Pederson and the Food/Dining area as the three lowest points.

The weight room, training room, locker room, team travel and ownership all were voted highly among players.

"Treatment of families is the team’s lowest graded category. Players believe that many changes need to be made," the NFLPA report said. "They would like more access to sideline passes so they can see their families pregame. During the game, players want a family room so their families can escape the heat and allow mothers to change/nurse babies. Finally, players want their post-game family area upgraded."

After Pederson was given an A- in 2024, he fell to a C in 2025. The NFLPA says that has to do with time and Pederson's reception to player feedback.

"57% of Jaguars players feel their former head coach Doug Pederson is efficient with their time, a rank of 31 out of 32," the report revealed. "The players felt that Pederson was somewhat receptive to locker room feedback on the team’s needs, ranking him 32 of 32 head coaches in the league."
  • Treatment of Families: F (31st)
  • Food/Dining area: C+ (23rd)
  • Nutritionist/Dietician: B (24th)
  • Locker room: B+ (10th)
  • Training room: B+ (7th)
  • Training staff: B- (24th)
  • Weight room: A (9th)
  • Strength coaches: B (25th)
  • Team travel: B+ (14th)
  • Head coach: C (31st)
  • Ownership: B+ (15th)

Well played, menobrown.

Jaguars released WR Christian Kirk.

The widely-expected move saves the Jaguars $10.4 million against the salary cap in 2025. Kirk missed much of the 2024 regular season after sustaining a broken collarbone in October, finishing the year with 27 catches for 379 yards and one touchdown on 47 targets. Kirk, 28, had a career year with the Jags in 2022, catching 84 passes for 1,108 yards and eight touchdowns. He’s struggled since then, and in 2024 was quickly usurped by Brian Thomas as the team’s No. 1 wideout. Kirk should have several suitors in free agency, though he would seem destined for a short-term, incentive-laden deal.

I don't see how this makes the Jags a better team plus you have a defensive minded head coach, the Jags have a terrific No 1 WR in Brian Thomas, maybe they draft another good prospect
Kirk will have success at his next stop, no doubt in my mind

I agree. I think this was more about cap space and the fact they feel confident that they can replace Kirk's production elsewhere for significantly less.

I guess that depends what you consider to be success for Kirk. if your definition of success is WR2 on his team then I'd say yes.

if its low level WR1 numbers.... maybe
if its elite numbers for the position, I'd say not a chance.

ideally he is a good WR2 on a contending team or a low end WR1 on a non contending team (assuming good health)

in most situations I'd consider 900-1000 yards to be a decent outcome for him and anything better than that is gravy. is that success? not sure.

Coen was the OC for Tampa (he's not a defensive guy)...guessing he wants to bring in "his own guys" on that side of the ball.

Godwin would be a fun pairing with Thomas.

I think he just meant to say offensive.

Insult to injury if Godwin goes there too.

I was on a roll this morning at 5-6am, must have confused the Jets and Jags somehow before I put on the 1st pot of coffee
Thanks for the benefit of the doubt, I owe you one

Jaguars' GM James Gladstone Talks Success in Free Agency: 'We're Focused on Winning This Fall'

JACKSONVILLE This was about improving, and doing so with the right players.

James Gladstone on Thursday afternoon met with the media to discuss a busy, productive free-agency period – and the Jaguars' first-year general manager left no doubt: This is a better team than it was a few days ago – for very good reasons.

"These guys are built right," Gladstone said.

"You've heard me say the phrase 'intangibly rich' quite a few times, and that was no different in our approach to pro free agency," Gladstone said. "By being nothing more than who they are, we can feel that they're going to level us up."

"Seeing that plan come to life, being executed in the way that it was certainly something that at this point in time I'm proud of," said Gladstone, adding that working with the Jaguars' personnel staff in recent weeks has been "An absolute blast."

"It's not the offseason that we're looking to win from a perception standpoint," he added. "We're looking to win football games this fall."

"We wanted to set ourselves up so we felt like we had the flexibility to address any position we wanted to at any pick point that lies on the horizon," he said. "We feel like we're currently in a position to do just that.

"We do feel like we're in a better position today than we were a couple of weeks ago to make it so that when we enter each decision at each pick point in April that we can continue to level up where we are from a personnel perspective."

Gladstone, who said the Jaguars took a disciplined approach to free-agent spending, said the focus this week was to "raise the floor of this football team" – and he said the feeling at the end of the week is that that was accomplished.

"Every player we pursued, and that we've now acquired, is meeting that standard," he said. "By being nothing more than who they are and who we know them to be, both on and off the field, they're going to do exactly what we had hoped they do – and that's level up this ecosystem."

I just read that for some reason. I’ll just chalk it up to him being a super young gm and trying hard to sound impressive like a big boy.
