Do you carry a backup QB on your bench? Why or Why Not? (1 Viewer)

Just wondering if most people carry a qb on their bench. If you have a 'stud' qb starting do you still carry a backup in case of injury? Or do you utilize that roster spot for an extra rb, wr,, lottery ticket, 2nd defense etc?

In my 16-team league I do at least until I'm past the bye b/c they never sit on the WW in that league.

Smaller leagues I look to pick one up a week or 2 ahead of the bye and then drop after, so it depends how early my main QB's bye is.

+1

In my 10 team, start 1 QB league I only carry 1 QB. Adjust for injuries and byes as the season progresses.

12 team league with 20 roster spots (like FFWC, FFPC, NFFC) I almost always leave the draft with just one quarterback (unless you got your preplanned QBBC)

If you drafted a STUD QB it really defeats that if you spend another mid draft pick for a backup you are only going to play one week.

The one exception this year might have been Rodgers where you needed to spend a 4th or 3rd round pick for him but he was starting at SEA - I would have gotten a lesser QB with a great first week matchup

Even if they had an early bye like Peyton this year there are plenty of quarterbacks in the FA pool in the first weeks so you are much better using that extra roster spot for an upside dart at a RB or WR - by Week 2 that player or another will have a ticket off your team to add a QB which you are then dropping in Week 5

I'm in a 12 team redraft standard scoring 18 man rosters.

I always TRY to keep a md whom my bench but he is always the first to get cut if I need to grab a Rb/wr/te.

Especially now with all the injuries to my RBS,I'm forced to keep just one qb BC I had to stack my roster with guys like Crowell, taliaferro, and Khiry while waiting for Mathews, ingram, and moreno to come back healthy.

So in an ideal world yeah I like to have a backup n the bench but it's not a season killer if you don't.

Of course. I rarely get one of the stud quarterbacks, so it makes sense to have a good backup to your usual starter. You don't want to put all of your eggs in one basket and then have your season go to #### if your QB goes down. I try not to do QBBC since I drive myself with those decisions every week.

I always have in the past, but this year I decided to experiment with not doing so. I felt very comfortable with my starting QB, so I passed on it in favor of an extra RB stash. Even with most teams rostering a backup QB in a 12-teamer, I think there is enough depth on the wire to find a decent option when the bye week rolls around. And if my guy should suffer a long-term injury, I think I'll be able to swing a deal for another starter. IMO quarterback is the easiest position to trade for in-season. In my experince there is usually someone who drafts and carries 3 of them, and that owner seldom gets value whenever they end up dealing one. Unless there is an epidemic of QB injuries, it seems like a pretty limited market when you're shopping an extra starter.

I think the easy availability of "insider" info these days makes it tougher to gain an edge against my opponents, so I'll take any small advantage I can get. Being able to carry an extra RB seems worth the risk.

Depends on your format, as always...In my 16 team dynasty league, there are exactly 11 free agent QBS available:

C.Henne

M.Cassel

D. Anderson

S. Hill

T. Yates

M. Hasselbeck

M. Vick

J. Campbell

B. Gradkowski

L. McCown

R. Nassib

Heaven help me if I had to pick one of them up for a week...so yeah we have backups upon backups :)

wouldn't recommend Cassel

Yes I carry a backup because most years I employ QBBC, but even if I don't do that in a given year, I carry a backup. In my league, QB's just aren't plentiful, and we use blind bidding only, so it's easy to get blocked nay given week. With every regular season win being so important, I don't want to risk needing to win a bid on a decent QB is a starting QB goes down.
