Do your kids (age 10-15) know their own address/zip code? (1 Viewer)

Do your kids know their full address, including zip code? Let's say 5th-9th graders only.

If you're not sure, give them a pencil and paper and have them write it down...or try to.

And don't assume they do.  Actually test them.

Just had a flashback to 2nd grade. Teacher randomly quizzed us on our street addresses and I'm pretty sure there were just 2 or 3 kids who didn't know it. One girl took a really long pause and said "avenue" and we all lost it.

Follow-up question: Can they tell time by looking at the big hand and the little hand?
Mine cannot. And they don't like round answers if they can see the exact time. If they ask me what time it is and I say 10:30 but thephone says 10:27 they freak all the way out. That's the 10 and under crowd. The teens don't care about anything.

My 6 year old gets pop quizzes every couple months.  Address, how to find the address (mailbox, curb) if he can't remember, mom and dad's names.  City, state.  How to find our phones and make an emergency call.

So mine is the only kid who doesn't know his zip code. Sure.
No I guess I glossed over that point. Mine doesn't as well because I never once taught him it. No reason he needs to know our zip code. But if I did teach him it then he'd have no problem knowing it.

so you're saying my kids are morons? or is that just me.

I would never call anyone's kids morons. I'm sorry if you took offense. Did you try teaching your child the zip code and they can't remember it? My son has a great memory. Really has nothing to do with smarts.

I should've added a winkie thing- I was kidding. even though my kids are actually morons.

we've never bothered teaching them the zip-code, because... mail? but yeah- it's 5 numbers. I think they can handle it (even if my 6yo still confuses our actual address with our subway stop).

The reason I asked is that yesterday my 1st period students had to fill out an order form for their (jr hi) graduation gowns.

2 didn't know their street number.

1 didn't know how to spell her street name.

4 or 5 didn't know their zip code.

And even though I wrote  on the board and instructed them verbally that they had to use a blue or black pen...one girl did it with a green highlighter.

And these are kids from a good neighborhood at a school with better than above average test scores. :loco:

My 3 and a half year old knows the street that we live on.  I could probably spend a day with him and I guarantee I could teach him our full address.  How a 15 year old would not know their own address is just not fathomable to me

So not from bako then. Gotcha.

My daughter knew her address and her mom's cell phone number in kindergarten.  I don't think we ever taught her our zip code though.  I am sure I could teach it to her today after school though if that will get me a passing grade in this class.

Don't worry.  Maybe tomorrow someone will start a "Do your kids know how to get their heads stuck in a fence?" thread and you will be so proud to say YES!!!.

My then 15-year old nephew was visiting my parents several years ago and they went out to a restaurant.  He had to call his mom to ask how he liked his meat cooked.

Not a chance.  They don't even know their cell phone numbers.  Or answer their phone.  Or know their email.  Definitely never open emails.

The younger generation lives in the cloud.

As dumb as it sounds at first, they are far more advanced than us middle agers.  They don't care what they drive or get the joy in driving.  All they care about is point A to point B.  They don't have paper mail for anything.  They don't need landline phones.  They don't need MS Office.   They don't need checks.

It's because our generation needs to feel the ownership and pride in something.  The kids don't.  It is all about the data.

Sounds less advanced in life to me.

I'll test her today. I think she does. Zip code might stump her. She knows both mine and my wife's phone number for sure. She's 11
