Does Miles Austin still have value this year? (1 Viewer)

Reports have said he'll be out 2-4 weeks (this being week 2). I'm sure there are some leagues, like mine, where his current owner needs a win and can't afford to keep him, see he gets dumped.

My questions are...

Will he see the field come weeks 13 and beyond? Or is his injury more severe?

If he does play, how effective do you think he will be?

His schedule from week 13 through 16 is: @ Arizona, Home vs NYG, @ TB, Home vs Philly. Zero cold weather/climate affected games. Even the tough matchup against Philly doesn't seem so tough at this point. And with a healthy Dez on the other side, Austin probably isn't drawing the #1 cornerback.

All in all, it looks like a good recipe for success......but will it be? I haven't heard much news on his hammy.

His hamstring is such a pain in the butt. His stock has never been lower. If you make the playoffs, try to trade for him for a half decent player. He should be healthy by then and Romo probably will look his way.

Even when healthy it's not like Romo is looking his way.
Really? I don't know because I haven't watched many of their games this year, but..His targets this year...Week 1 - 9Week 2 - 15Week 6 - 10Week 7 - 5 (in a game where the Cowboys ran the ball 33 time for 200+ yards on the Rams)Week 8 - 3 (Against Philly...goose egg first half and caught all three of his targets in the 2nd half. Dez Bryants stat line was almost identical for this game)Week 9 - 3 (Injured during the game...left early in 2nd quarter)

Even when healthy it's not like Romo is looking his way.
Agreed that its not trending well right now for Austin:Targets:Week 1 9Week 2 15Week 6 10Week 7 5Week 8 3Week 9 3* Left game early with hammy.Who knows really though. Bryant will probably be drawing the majority of the coverage for the rest of the season. Austin certainly has the talent to be a difference maker.

Also runnning the ball more with Murray, and getting good contribution from other WR now.

This.

The appeal in my eyes with Austin was the lack of running game Dallas had before Murray and forced them to throw.

Now there isn't that need anymore. And with Laurent on board even more mouths to feed.

If healthy, Miles will be at least a WR3 if not a WR2. Why? Because Romo trusts him. Romo trusts Witten and is developing trust with Robinson. He doesnt fully trust Dez yet as Dez isnt always where he's supposed to be.

When all receivers are heathly, expect Miles to be #2 in targets behind Witten. This is over time, multiple games. Romo will most definitely take what the defense is giving him. If Austin is doubled, Romo will go elsewhere. In the Philly game, the Eagles were doubling both Miles and Dez. Neither got many targets. And there were games with both Miles and Dez where teams rolled coverage to Miles only. And obviously if Dallas is running the ball a lot, they aren't passing.

The bottom line is that Miles will be up and down in his weeks. Much depends on how defenses are playing him. But he is Romo's preferred WR target and he has proven the ability to have big games.

A couple good points made...let me try this...

Where would you rank him going forward from weeks 13 through 16, assuming he plays fully in all 4 games, and is healthy?

The WR2 range of: Steve Johnson/Maclin/Victor Cruz/Damian Williams/Boldin/AJ Green

Or the WR3 range of: Julio Jones/Mike Williams/Sidney Rice/Plaxico

Or are we looking more like WR4: Reggie Wayne/Greg Little/Steve Breaston/Early Doucet

I'm inclined to think he's WR3 material...with the upside to have an explosive WR1 or WR2 game. I definately like him more than everyone in the WR4 range...but not sure if I like him more than the Julio Jones, Mike Williams, Sidney Rice, Plaxico group. I think his floor (if healthy) is the same as all theirs, but his ceiling is higher though the FF playoffs for all of 'em except maybe Julio Jones.

I think he is in the Roddy White range (completely unreliable at this point).

Austin is a stud when healthy. If you have the bench room you have to stash him for the playoffs or you might be facing him in week 13-16. I dont need to take that chance, not yet.

Has there been any report on how the injury is healing? This is week 2, and I am going to assume next week is a long shot.....but has there been any news of a progression or a setback with the hammy?

I don't think that DAL will rush him back, as they can't afford to lose him, with how brittle Dez can be. Miles has always put up good numbers for me and will be in my line-up when he returns; in place of either Wallace, Carolina Steve, or D. Moore.

Hmmm...all of those guys are the focus of the passing game for their respective teams. I don't think it's a give Austin is ranked ahead of any of them at this point in the season, I take those guys over Austin.

I don't disagree but my point is that I have always played Austin and reaped the benefits. Unless he has gone down to injury during a game, he has always put good numbers for me; I would not worry about targets, or Laurent for that matter.

One thing to remember is in the three weeks he played after coming back from his hammy, Romo was suffering from his cracked ribs and was not throwing the ball down the field. Romo looks to finally be healthy, so if (IF!!!) Austin gets back to full strength, I think his line will resemble week 1 more than week 6-8. Based on the schedule, high end WR2.

At least that's what I told the guy I traded him to for Palmer.

Been trying to trade him for 2 weeks. So far the best offer I got was Blount (Dont need a RB) and Piere Garcon. Need a WR bad but turned down Garcon. I think I can get David Nelson for him and with today being the trade deadline I mgiht try hard as I see the Bills have one of the best schedules for WR for weeks 14-16. Im desperate for a WR who can do anything with my others being Mike Williams. Greg Little. Sidney Rice and Eric Decker. Nelson while not super consistent might be my best bet going forward.

I got rid of him in a 2 for 2 on the trade deadline.

Cruz and Bradshaw for my Austin and Greene

The risk of re-injury scares me enough to pull the trigger.

Mike Williams has been frustrating. I'm basically trying to decide if I should drop MW for Miles Austin who clears waivers tomorrow morning. In a ppr at least you know Williams is usually gonna have 5-6 receptions for 40-60 yards. That's 10 points. Usually pretty standard and automatic from him. The problem is, he's not getting TDs, and his not getting big yardage totals. Add to that Freeman hasn't looked great, and other WRs have stepped up (unlike last year). At least with Austin, you have the potential for a monster game with over 100 yards and a TD or two.

A typical risk/reward scenario. I can't believe that MW is anything more than a bench player for you; I would definitely roll with Austin here.

And where do you rank the risk with Bradshaw's injury?
Pretty high. In my case, I really can't afford to have a receiver sitting on my bench rolling into the playoffs. I don't like Greene much so I'm taking Bradshaw's word for it. It'll probably bite me in the ###.

I have been offered Austin for Michael Crabtree.

I don't care if Austin sits for the next two weeks, but he COULD play for me in the playoffs, whereas Crabtree will not. It's big risk, potentially big reward, and for that reason, I'm accepting the offer.
