Does the NFL need a rule to prevent "Tanking"? (1 Viewer)

IND cut (or chose not to resign) about every player that is worth a damn on their roster.

Peyton, Saturday, Wayne, Garcon, Bracket, Addai...

It's obvious that IND has no intentions of trying to win a game in 2012.

... I'll bet they're licking their chops at the thought of trading away next years now "guaranteed" 1.01 and receiving the same Kings Ransom that STL got from WAS this year.

Does the NFL need some type of rule to prevent this type of "tanking"?

It is called rebuilding, Pirates have been doing it in baseball for 19 years and no one has stepped in yet. :)And even though those guys are pretty big names, all but Garcon are past their prime and some think that he isn't even good. With Luck coming in, they could turn things around within a few years if he is "the next peyton" type QB.

With the new CBA, the top picks are even more valuable than they were before (salary limits). It would make sense to for the NFL to go to a lottery system (like the NBA) to better insure against teams tanking.

Tank all you want but with the roster sizes of the NFL there's zero guarantees it will help you...as long as the Colts are spending close to the cap they can rebuild however they want...

Maybe for 2011, not for 2012.

Also they offered Garcon a generous contract, he turned it down. The rest of the guys they cut, with the exception of Manning which is a special case, aren't exactly Pro Bowl players anymore.

I don't think they have to spend anything ....unless this guy has no idea what he's talking about;Al Lackner / Ask the Commish: 8-29-11

"In terms of minimum salary for each team, the salary floor is 89% of the cap. However, that does not start until 2013. Hence, there is in essence no salary floor in 2011 or 2012. (Note this point, as there is plenty of misinformation about this running rampant in the press!"

Guess IND will be forced to spend money in 2013 though.

I understand all the guys the Colts let go. Garcon they wanted to keep, but not at a big salary (I wouldn't either). Peyton was carrying that team (not just the offense) for years. Without building and stocking an entire team (a la PIT, NE, BAL), a team will need to get torn down from scratch eventually. Luckily (no pun intended), they can start with a great prospect at QB on offense. Will they be bad in 2012? Most likely. Is it their goal right now? I highly doubt.

They cut a bunch of older, injured vets who weren't earning their keep yesterday. Why keep a decent, but aging, small cover 2 LB coming off a season where he missed all but 1 game to injury, a broken down TE, an injury-riddled safety, and Addai during a complete rebuild?

They resigned (or extended) Mathis and tried to keep Garcon (who refused to resign). It's not tanking. It's getting rid of overpaid, aging, and (for the most part) injured vets knowing full well these guys aren't going to be big parts of a team that's in need of a total overhaul.

:goodposting:I wouldnt call this tanking at all. They know they arent going anywhere in 2012, why not get rid of their old (Garcon exception, btu as stated he turned down a more than generous deal, $7M per IIRC), overpaid players and let the youngbloods move in as starters and see who sticks? The only one of the bunch I wouldve liked to seen kept if I were Luck is Wayne, but he apparently wants to follow Manning.

You act like their cuts were all great players. Given your philosophy, if they wanted a ton of draft picks and were cutting players of any value whatsoever, don't you think they would attempt to TRADE these players even for 5th or 6th round picks? The Free Agents are of course a different thing, but like another said, I'm sure some guys like Garcon, Wayne, etc didn't want to re-sign there. They kind of have no choice in what they're doing, and they will be better in 2 years because of it. Otherwise they'd have a 5 win season and then have to cut these aging players anyways. I think its great to see a team totally wipe house and accept starting fresh rather then trying to win with what they've got even when it will likely not be enough year after year without major roster changes (titans, skins, etc)

Looks like the Colts are making the right moves to me. They are cutting ties with all the older vets and starting over with younger players. Anyone who could have said "Well, thats not how Peyton would have done it" is gone. New team, new attitude. I would hardly call that tanking, I will bet they win more games next year than last year.

Pretty hard not to.

Wow, what a daring prediction!

Well that depends, is he talking about the Indianapolis Colts or the Denver Colts?

I'd say they'll have a very difficult time winning more games than they did last year. Are there ANY high priced players left on the team? Seems like the targets that they cut were the only players with decent contracts.I think the truth is that the buisness minded owner is going to get a "discount" on his payroll this year as there is no salary floor for this season.Pretty safe bet that they sign no big name free agents and we'll see a payroll amount that is the lowest in league history in the past 15 years or more. So, the owner fills his pockets with the tickets sales, Luck jersey sales, and TV revinue, nabs the 1st overall pick in next years draft ... win, win situation for him.The losers are the fans of the Colts and the fans of the teams that play them 16 times. (unless you enjoy watching a game that is 31-0 ... at halftime).

Holy ####, do any of you people realize the Colts won *0* games last year?! Of course they will win more. Luck himself, even as a rookie, will be good for at least a couple wins Id guess. I doubt they win more than 4 or 5, but theyll no doubt win more than last year

dude, the colts cut a bunch of players that sucked. i dunno wtf ur on about. also, they didnt cut garcon, hes a fa.

Don't confuse the NFL with fantasy football. Teams are dealing with millions of dollars at stake. Losing teams make less money. Paying lots of money to vets who won't help you win much more than a game or two is a negative investment. An extra loss or two now means better picks and better picks give a greater chance at future success (IE: Wins...IE: dollars)

REAL TEAMS must balance future earnings against present earnings and determine any individuals impact on BOTH present and future earnings. "Tanking" is an inappropriate term for such a complex process with MILLIONS at stake.
