Dolphin Players bullied Jonathan Martin, Richie Incognito SUSPENDED (1 Viewer)

Reports: Incognito left racial slur, death threat on Martin’s voicemail

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that in April of 2013, Incognito left a voicemail for Martin saying, “Hey, wassup, you half n—– piece of [expletive] . . . I saw you on Twitter, you been training ten weeks. [i want to] [expletive] in your [expletive] mouth. [i'm going to] slap your [expletive] mouth. [i'm going to] slap your real mother across the face (laughter). [Expletive] you, you’re still a rookie. I’ll kill you.”
I'm not defending Incognito, but I think the headline makes him sound like a white supremacist who really wanted to kill the guy and assault his mother. I don't think this is the case. I think he was just being a bully, and harassing the guy. No doubt Incognito probably has a screw loose, but do you all really think he wanted to kill the guy?
Really? After the Aaron Hernandez story?

+1

I don't think you can take threats from these thugs lightly. Fight back and then the other guy's buddies drive by and put a few rounds into you. that has to cross your mind.

It doesnt matter what I believe.

It doesnt matter what you believe.

It matters what Martin believed. Likely Incognito picked him because he was someone who WOULD believe the threats and not stand up to the intimidation.

Think about what Martin did. HE WALKED AWAY FROM AN NFL GIG. Do you think he did that on a lark?? Or is it reasonable to conclude he felt genuinely threatened and the Dolphins would do nothing about it.

He would rather walk away than keep dealing with Incognito every day.....that tells you all you need to know about how HE felt.

C'mon, you don't think Martin has some sissy in him? You think he handled this well?
So you either get in a physical altercation or you're a sissy?
Wooooo dude....you have to read my posts. I said "I'm not saying throw down with the maniac..."

I mean none of us know how Martin tried to handle this previously, but start at standing up for yourself and telling the big dope "hey I'm here to play football, leave me out of your bull####". Or, if you're so terrified of the guy being dangerous like some others are suggesting (which I think is ridiculous), how about knocking on your coaches door, or general managers door?

If the guys first defense was to run home to mommy and daddy, then I don't care what any of you think, imo he's a sissy. A sissy that I do feel bad for, but a sissy nonetheless.
Because those were the same people that installed Incognito into a leadership position on the team. That's called a rock and a hard place. My opinion of you has changed.
Wow ok. That's weird but ok.

So because they put Incognito in that position, they would dismiss one of their players reporting he's being extorted and threatened and doesn't feel safe being in THEIR locker room? Gotcha

I mean I think Philbin has proved he is not a leader of men. But I guess you think much much worse of him, which extends beyond being a football coach.

I find it incredibly hard to believe that no one in the organization (players, coaches, or administration) new this was going on. The sad part about it is none of them felt the line was being crossed far enough to take it one step further.

I think this story is going to be far more than Richie being drug through the mud. There has to be other players that knew or others that did nothing.

I think the tone of the text clearly indicates it was in a joking, although tasteless manor. Incognito is definitely a jerk, but I don't think you can relate him to Hernandez. Are we supposed to lock everyone up who says "I am going to kill you"? What about Steve Smith saying he is going to "bust Janoris Jenkins in the mouth" when he sees him in the streets? Is that ok since it wasn't a death threat?

Other than the majority QBs most NFL players are one rung above prison lifers. Educated players or well rounded individuals usually have a tougher time in a NFL locker room..just as they would in a maximum prison.
IIRC, this was one of the reasons fomer Minnesota RB Robert Smith retired so early.

That post CLAIMS Martin had already threatened suicide in the past. If true, Incognito is an even bigger POS than I thought. Who doesnt like to poke guys with mental problems who have already threatened to kill themselves :(

I wonder if he told them (Dolphins management)?

Just curious what his future options could be. Could he/they conceivably agree to tear up his contract and move him to another team?

Something tells me Richie plays in the NFL again before Martin. Sad but true.

So how is he a "sissy" again?

I know this, whatever team Martin goes to next, no one will mess with him. If Incognito gets another gig ever, which I doubt, he will be the joke of everything.

Ironic, no?
Why should Martin play again? He can sue Incognito and the Dolphins for millions, and then be set for life.
Gee, I don't know, because maybe he loves the game. Maybe it isnt about the money for everyone, and assuming he is doing this for money is beyond the scope of whats really happening.
Does he? He just walked away it seems
Yup. He clearly does not love it THAT much. I know I will get lambasted by many for saying this, and probably be told that people feel sorry for my kids, but...

The hazing that has been reported thus far does not sound all that bad to me. The $15K is bad, but not worthy of walking out on your team. The "getting up from the table" BS just sounds like guys being guys. And the recent report that Martin did the exact same thing to Nate Garner (backup guard) the prior week puts a bigger question mark on all of this. You are going to do it to someone else, and then cry when they do it to you? Really? Then tell on them? Sounds like 3rd grade.

I am not saying that the "victim" is to blame here. I am just saying that based upon what I have read, the alleged hazing does not seem to justify someone quitting on their teammates in the middle of a semi-promising season. There is probably a lot that I dont know, ranging possibly from worse hazing, mental illness, or both. Just basing this on what I have read...thats all. So hold off on calling me a bad parent for now.

ETA - That was not directed at any poster in particular - just the mentality of those getting high up on their soap boxes claiming that Martin is unquestionably right in all of this, and anyone questioning that point of view is a moronic thug.
The normal hazing of taping a player to a goal post or giving him a funny hair cut is part of a rookie experience. One thing you skipped over is the hate crime aspect of this story. What if a racial slur or homophobic slur was made by Incognito to Martin in a text or email?
Good point. That is inexcusable.
I don't know...I'd rather get called a name than taped to a goalpost or get a funny haircut.Seems like name calling is the least of whatever happened here.
Even if that name is a racial/ethnic/homosexual slur?
Absolutely.

Without minimizing the very real impact of discrimination at all, I can safely say Id rather be called whatever slur you can come up with than be the subject of physical violence.
I guess this is where I see things differently. If, over the course of decades, every NFL team has a fun way of welcoming rookies to the team, I see no problem with it. If the veterans received a goofy haircut and pass that on to the next group of rookies, then fine. It's when a veteran like Incognito has to work outside the box and come up with a way to take it too far.

In light of these texts/voice mails, I don't believe this has anything to do with rookie hazing. I think this has to do with Incognito being a bully and Martin finally having enough.

As far as the Martin playing for the Miami Hurricanes, the Huskers were called the "canes of the plains" for a decade. Lawrence Philips and Christian Peters are two players that I wouldn't want to hang around. No surprise that Incognito is another product of Nebraska football.

I'm 100% confident Richie Icognito is a huge d-bag, but this entire situation is ridiculous. I can't believe people actually think he should never play again. Mike Vick killed dogs, Ray Lewis played a role in a murder, and countless others have had domestic violence charges. This is nothing compared to any of those situations.

I am sure players say much worse things to each other on the field during the games. I don't think the Dolphins should ignore this issue, but how long will it be before players start getting kicked out of games for calling other players names?

Another problem I have with this is that Incognito wasn't the only one. Initial reports say he was bullied by other members of the O-line as well. Why do jerks like Pouncy just get to skate by on this?
Im more interetsed in the gray areas than the black-and-white. Incognito seems like a very special kind of psycho which makes the situation impossible to overlook. He will have to pay for his actions, words and demeanor.

But where do you draw the line? Dozens of current and former/players admit that this happens all the time. Rumors are even circulating that Martin has been on the other side. Do you think Martin ever participated in an OL dinner paid for by a rookie? What if someone quit because they were humilated after getting taped to a goal post? Or suffered psychologically from getting their head shaved? Would that constitue hazing and require punishment?

This is going to open a HUGE can of worms as there are MANY more players (and incidents) that will be looked at with greater scrutiny. Herm Edwards, a player/coach for 30 years and a seemingly good man, did not flinch when being told Martin had to pay for a $15K dinner ("it should only happen once though" was his retort. ) Whats the tipping point? When the NFL sets some type of "hazing limit"? Or when someone blows their head off?
Excellent post native
My feeling is that, this will mark the end of hazing in the NFL. It quite simply wont be tolerated anymore.

I don't know enough about Richie Incognito or Jonathan Martin to comment so I checked out the Twitter pages of Incognito and Martin and found the following:

Incognito voicemail and tweets to Martin

The case against Richie Incognito is strong, apparently, and it seems the Dolphins guard had little desire to hide his troubling approach to teammate Jonathan Martin.

We've known since Sunday that Martin had texts and a voice mail from Incognito that -- in the context of a harassing or menacing vibe -- seem to prove Incognito mistreated his teammate.

According to CBSSports.com, Incognito in April sent Martin a text that referred to him as a "half-n----r." According to ESPN, Incognito left a voicemail in April, the transcript of which reads as follows:

"Hey, wassup, you half-n----r piece of (expletive). I saw you on twitter, you been training ten weeks. Want to (expletive) in your (expletive) mouth. I'm going to slap your (expletive) mouth. Going to slap your real mother across the face. (laughter). You're still a rookie. I'll kill you."

Incognito obviously felt he was joking. Martin obviously disagrees.

Incognito was also not to shy about calling out his offensive line mate on twitter. The tweets, again from April.

April, by the way, was apparently quite a month in this relationship

It has been reported that Martin went to Philbin in the spring.
Where did you see that?
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap2000000275489/article/jonathan-martin-talked-to-joe-philbin-about-issues-in-spring

The Jonathan Martin situation just recently came to a head, but it's hardly new.

Multiple Miami Dolphins sources said Sunday that the offensive lineman approached coach Joe Philbinto discuss his issues during organized team activities in the spring. One team source said Martin's desire to even continue playing football had been questioned, but the team believed the situation was quelled after it was addressed at that time. Another source who has spoken to Martin said the second-year pro addressed his issues with the work environment in Miami at the meeting with Philbin, though a team source contended the Dolphins weren't aware of them until last week.

Internally, Dolphins officials wondered if the Bryant McKinnie trade two weeks ago -- done largely because of Martin's struggles at left tackle and the team's overall problems up front -- was responsible for Martin's issue bubbling up again last week. But according to a team source and a source close to the player, it was communicated to the Dolphins that Martin wasn't angry or dispirited over the deal.

The lunch-room prank that apparently sent Martin over the edge involved the offensive linemen, who would stand up and leave the table after the last one arrived with his food, leaving that person by himself. Multiple team sources characterized the prank as being fairly ordinary among the O-linemen. In fact, one source said Martin was part of the same prank when some players played it on guard Nate Garner one week earlier. Another source said Martin's O-line mates weren't aware of his previous problems or that he'd met with Philbin, which led those players to believe nothing was wrong.

Also at issue, according to a source close to Martin, was the $15,000 that teammates expected him to pay for a Las Vegas trip that he didn't attend.

The NFL Players Association released a statement Saturday saying it isn't conducting an investigation into how Dolphins teammates treated Martin, although executive director DeMaurice Smith told NFL Media's Jeff Darlington on Sunday that the situation is on the union's radar.

"Our job is to make sure that, as facts come in, we take a look at them," Smith said at FedEx Field before the Washington Redskins' game against the San Diego Chargers. "We take our job seriously about protecting and ensuring that the league and the clubs provide a safe workplace for our players. So, right now, our job is to make sure, as information comes in, we take a hard look at it and stay on top of the situation."

UPDATE: Incognito told NFL Media's Jeff Darlington on Sunday that he has been suspended indefinitely by the team. Coach Joe Philbin delivered the news to Incognito. The team later confirmed the suspension for conduct detrimental to the team.

Did Pouncey leave him racist voicemails and texts threatening to kill him and hit his mother? If so, then he should be dealt with similarly. There is context, as well. You can get away with saying crazy #### in the heat of battle on the field. This is different. If you can't distinguish between the two, then you're just not going to get it.
I agree he should be punished, but do you really think he should never play another down of football? That's kind of overboard imo.
this is in the early stages of the investigation. we don't know pouncey will skate. this could also involve philbin and ireland, if they knew of these allegations and ignored them as a complicit pattern, it could take the entire regime down (perhaps ireland will have more plausible deniability, to use watergate-like terminology, than philbin, who was closer to the team)...

i don't know if vick had priors, or lewis, but if they had been involved with murdering dogs or people at nebraska, and with the rams, and again with another pro team, the league might start to think they were habituals and chronic offenders and take stronger action... insane-nito has a well documented history extending back at least to college, if not high school.

lewis took a plea down to an obstruction charge, if the prosecution had strong evidence that he was directly involved, they might not have traded the plea agreement for his testimony...

but another difference you don't seem to be accounting for, and while vick's crimes were indisputably heinous, what incognito has done is directed at his own teammates... he is clearly a locker room cancer... not the same as vick and lewis (lewis especially has always been thought of as one of the best leaders of his generation, as far as football)...

it sounds like if this becomes a criminal matter, incognito could be facing jail time (does he have previous convictions, if so, he may be less likely to face reduced charge, be able to plea or get probation?)... vick was one of the top QBs, and younger when he got out than incognito would be... and still, i think the eagles may have been the only team willing to take on the controversy of vick, and ride out the repercussions... it wouldn't be a surprise at all if all NFL doors are slammed shut for him in the future, depending on how this goes down.

another question is it seems obvious the dolphins and NFL will be sued over this... it seems like the team and league, having deep pockets and not wanting the black eye, would be most likely to want an out of court settlement... but if incognito faces a criminal investigation and trial, than keeping this out of court won't be an option...

"To be fair"?? The fact that Ditka took immediate is exactly the point, and the relevant reason for him to voice opinion here, isn't it?
Yes ... I wasn't trying to slam Ditka or imply that he's being hypocritical with his recent comments. I was trying to convey that Ditka knows from whence he speaks, but I was concerned that my first sentence could be taken as a slam. That's why I added the "to be fair" part -- but I should've written "to be clear".

A lot of people are coming into this thread late and thinking the beginning and end of all the rigamarole is "Incognito bullied Martin, and Martin couldn't take it."

That's essentially a side issue now. Many more players are involved, and not in simple Revenge of the Nerds bullying or hazing. Many of the team's veterans graduated to extortion (and by extension, tax evasion) against young players. That's where the real damage will be done and where the real criminal penalties will be levied.

So if anyone is thinking "why would Incognito be in legal trouble for talking schmidt?", dig deeper into the information that's coming out. This is one thread for which it pays to read through the entire thing. If you're gonna skim, at least open all the linked articles and read through them.

I'm not defending Incognito, but I think the headline makes him sound like a white supremacist who really wanted to kill the guy and assault his mother. I don't think this is the case. I think he was just being a bully, and harassing the guy. No doubt Incognito probably has a screw loose, but do you all really think he wanted to kill the guy?
this may not be so clear cut in the wake of alleged hernandez slaying/s (not to mention possible overlap with pouncey)...

i was reading about criminal threats (used to be called terrorist threats?) last night... part of the burden of proof, should a person reasonably be threatened... in incognito's case, i think he does have a history of trouble (if not murder) extending back to college or even high school...

it may not be as much of a stretch as you seem to think for martin to make a strong case he was genuinely concerned incognito might do something... oh, i don't know, LOCO!

A sissy that I do feel bad for, but a sissy nonetheless.
do you know he didn't go to the coaches... is the first instinct that martin is guilty until proven innocent, and sort the facts out later?

I'm just going off what I've seen and heard and read.

Dan Lebatard trying to encourage folks to not pick sides yet. Showing Martin got piled on by fans last week as a wimp for leaving and couldn't handle a little friendly joke. We now know after a lot more details that this position was pretty wrong.

He also says that it would seem the Incognito cell phone call was leaked and other messages, perhaps Incognito was an easy scapegoat. Info later in the week might frame this a little differently.

He is pointing the blame squarely on the front office, Miami had 3 press releases on Sunday, back and forth.

Saying that bullying on the weak. THill was also a target because he was paid the most as a rookie, he got stuck hard on a watercraft outing that ended up costing a lot of money.

-Details leaking is what DL is saying is the difference, says this runs rampant in the NFL but the details leaking and the Giant(Martin) fleeing. martin released the details of these messages. Good job of the info leaked as the shift has gone from him to Incognito, the Phins, etc...

This goes on everywhere if you give any credence to Dan, the details leaking and the Giant fleeing are the 2 things that are different in this situation.

-Don't shoot the messenger, that be me :)

Apparantly Incognito's VM's and Texts occured back in April and not over the weekend when the story broke. Just an interesting FYI.

I read the text. That is just men being men. If you read between the lines I think Incognito actually likes the guy. I call my friends names all of the time and threaten to kill them. We all laugh and go have a beer.......Of course we are in our 50's

Agree 100%

Incognito was asked about how they treated him with THill...Incognito said he and Pouncey were gonna buy Jet Skis and THill had to pick up the costs. Pretty awesome radio if you guys can tune in thru the internet...

Incognito had a sign next to his locker that said he hated two things...taxes and rookies.

Am i the only one who doesn't think the texts are as bad as i was expecting given the huge whirlwind on espn etc? Maybe somethings wrong with me but i just don't see the threats. Taken in a vacuum they seem bad but put together with the pictures together, the birthday well wishes, the shout outs etc, it seems like he was busting his balls. Overdone yes, very immature yes but im not seeing the omg here.
