Downgrade Frank Gore? (1 Viewer)

Would you downgrade Frank Gore if Smith is lost for the season? More teams will put players in the box to contatin him if San Fran can't pass IMO. How do you think Trent Dilfer perform? Any opinions?

If A. Smith is done, so is Gore. Just two different types of injuries, Gore's injury stems from the fact that he has whatcha ya call the 11 man virus.

No. Dilfer is not as bad as he looked last week. Seattle was doing jailbreak blitzes, 6 and 7 coming at times. Dilfer didnt stand a chance early, and then he was skittish for the rest of the game. Gore still looked AWESOME (after his two early fumbles lol) - outstanding burst through the hole, open field moves on the fly, bouncing off of contact. If anything I would be fishing for him with some trade offers because of this possible belief that he'll be hurt by the loss of Smith. I don't think the Niners offense will lose much going from Smith to Dilfer, Smith had not improved, and Dilfer will be better with a week to prepare as the starter.

No downgrade since San Francisco wasn't passing with Smith. Dilfer may actually do better once he get's the rust off. Smith has been horrible this year.

Edit: Ya..what Bloom said!

As a Gore owner, I had the displeasure of watching Dilfer last week and he looked horrible. It seems that this year more than ever, we get to see what happens to good running backs with bad QB play vs good QB play. I wish I would have taken Addai...

I didn't see the game, but it looked like Gore's biggest problem last week was that Dilfer couldn't keep the offense on the field long enough to give Gore the touches. I'm not sure the team even got to the red zone.

One would think that with a week of practice, that could change this week. It actually looked like (from the stats) Gore was involved in the passing game for the 1st time this year.

Dilfer is at least as good a QB as Smith, but the Niners offense still sucks. Gore is currently RB#14, and that's probably about right going forward.

I don't see this as a QB issue...It's an o-line and WR issue.

The pass blocking (especially blitz pickup) has been terrible in San Fran and they aren't giving their QB's enough time to even blink, let alone throw the ball. The other problem is that they lack a true deep threat to make teams pay for putting eight in the box. Jackson is a very polished WR, but he doesn't really have the kind of speed that will beat defenses over the top. If Ashley Lelie weren't such a panty waste, he could really do wonders for freeing up Gore to do his thing. I'm amazed Shannahan ever got a 1,000 yard season out of him.

No... Smith wasn't doing anything anyways. Dilfer is a possession QB, and once he starts to gel with the offense, Gore may see more carries, and better stats.

With Smith in there, the defense just keyed on Gore, and Smith wasn't doing anything with the ball. At least they will have to respect Dilfer a little bit because he can effectively move the ball... and USED to not make a lot of mistakes.

Also...

Are we forgetting that as pathetic as San Fran's offense was last week... that Gore (even though he only touched the ball 19 times) still had 121 total yards?

Alex Smith isn't going to me mistaken for Joe Montana anytime soon. I doubt he altered defensive game plans, which are focused on stopping Gore, a situation I do not see changing anytime in the near future regardless of Dilfer or Smith lining up under center.

 I think people lose sight of the fact that Smith was terrible last year. Gore did well enough last week, the Niners just didn't call his number enough times. Sixteen carries for a total of 79 yards is pretty good.

The offensive line better block better or we'll be having the same discussion next week except it will be Gore's value with Hill as the QB.

I don't see any big effect on Frank. Its not as if any team respected the SF passing attack the last two seasons anyway...he's been running against 8 in the box the entire time. The OL really has had a significant drop in play so far this year, specifically Larry Allen.

God....me, too.I struggled with Gore/Addai and I took Gore.Boy am I hating that decision. Just goes to show...when in doubt between two similar players, go with the player from the more proven offense.

Gore fumbled twice in the first quarter and was no better than average for the whole game. A couple of nice runs and that's it. Dilfer sucks. His performance won't be much better with a full week of practice. He's a great backup as far as having the moxie to lead a team. But his accuracy is horrid and without a line and a running game he doesn't have a chance of putting up even decent stats. A great, great team leader and extremely smart, but no longer can he translate that to the field.Oh, and DJax will drop just as many Dilfer passes as he has Smith passes.

I hope Gore turns it around. I just traded for him.

I gave MB3, Galloway and two 08 1st's for Gore, Lee Evens and 08 2nd.

PPR dynasty

Gore netted an average of 6 yards (rush + catch) per touch in a game where the 49ers looked horrible. Yeah, I can see why you'd say Gore was no better than average :goodposting:

Smith is not good. He hasn't been the only problem, but he also hasn't been part of the solution.

I think there's a chance the playcalling loosens up with a veteran int here, meaning teams will have to respect the pass more. They really can't respect it any less.

In all honestly, Smith has been a bottom-5 QB in the NFL this season. If Dilfer can be a bottom-10 QB, that's an upgrade. Dilfer can't be any worse than Smith IMO.

Sure, Gore will have some difficulties, but no more than he already had.

I am hoping Gore turns in another crappy performance vs. the tough Ravens run D this week and then I will be targeting him in a trade.

Dilfer, Smith, it doesn't matter THAT much. The O-line has been AWFUL so far this year. Even the big TD run Gore had vs STL was done all by himself as he ran into gang of defenders where the hole was supposed to be and just bounced off and ran around/through them for a long TD. Last year the Oline was very very good in the run game and a great surprise. This year they are a great surprise for being so so bad. Jennings and Allen have been bad, and Smiley has been a downright embarassment so far. I don't know if you can predict the Oline to pick it up or not, but as a Gore owner, you have to hope.

edited to add; Gore's stats don't look bad so far this year, but that's just because he's THAT good. Possibly the best pure runner in the league. Still, if the line does not improve, it will severely hamper his fantasy stats.

As someone from Baltimore (and unfortunately playing against a guy with Gore this week), you can be assured that Dilfer will do his best to show the Raven's that he thinks they made a mistake in letting him go...

his whole career

as a Gore owner Im considering Smith going down a good thing. How can you downgrade him when he didnt have a QB to start with? Smith looked horrible people

Easy math here:No Smith+Dilfer- V. Davis = 8 in the box all day for Gore. Downgrade him to about RB#20
How is the current situation any different than last year?Last year, Smith was below average. VD was hurt. Seems to me the WRs might actually be a slight upgrade this year over last year.I don't see how your "math" applies.
