D'Qwell Jackson Vs. DeMeco Ryans (1 Viewer)

As much as I love DeMeco Ryans, I wouldn't be surprised if the answer to the long term answer to this question isn't nearly as lopsided as it may appear today.

Both will get a lot of playing time this season. It's all but written in stone that Ryans will be the starting MLB and Jackson should win the starting RILB job in Cleveland.

Long term, Ryans is probably the better bet as the 4-3 MLB. But Jackson got a lot of experience in a pro 3-4 set at Maryland and was a highly regarded prospect. It's not a stretch to think he'll prove to be more talented than Andra Davis and be moved into the highlight position in the Browns' defense. The problem there is that the Browns just gave Davis a pretty solid contract extension. He's signed through 2010 and his base salary doesn't start to get ugly (if at all in the coming NFL landscape) until 2008. And he's certainly not given the Browns too much to complain about.

So I'll take Ryans but think Jackson has pretty good upside long term.

After reading your article IDP Dynasty, wich btw is an AWSOME article, especially Scouting the Rookie Draft part! I would think you have alot of love for both these guys, very similar players. Since you have let the cat out of the bag so-to-speak lol. The method Jean lays out in scouting rookie IDP, is extremely effective, of course you need a good scouting source. I've used this method for a number of years, (as far back as Offerdahl) and have had a tremendous amount of success with it. Sure, you miss here and there, but the overall success rate will be high. Sorry, didn't mean to hijack thread.

I think both will have very good long term upside. I would also give Ryans the slight edge because of the 4-3. Actually, I don't believe it is all that lopsided. I look for Jackson to beat out Thompson, and start from day one.

DeMeco is a superior prospect (in hindsight) given his apparent ascention to a 3-down MLB role ...
No hindsight involved IMO. Ryans was a better prospect and landed in a better situation. I never understood why people ranked Jackson higher after the draft.Croyle had Ryans rated equal to Ernie Sims before the draft.

both are great talents, I think they are in the "sweet spot" with hoge...

at this all too deep lb class... has there been this many quality LBs to hit the league at the same time, any year before...

I agree, I think Ryans was almost universaly the (NFL) higher rated player. The twist came when FFB guys started reading their tea leaves. For me Ryans was a great IDP prospect for a big reason - a very highly rated LB who's skill set seemed to scream MIDDLE LINEBACKER. Not so for most fortune tellers. Many even had him at the dreaded SLB position. IDPers flocked to Jackson because he was the #1 rated ILB. Ah, cruel fate.... And a bunch of us were able scoop Ryans up long after Jackson was picked on Sims' draft position heals.
