Dr. Who (new series) (1 Viewer)

Alright, so I have seen every episode of the new Who other than most of Capaldi's. Saw a few, didn't love him but that's how I always feel about a new Doctor at first. I got distracted from it a while ago, and bc I didn't hear good things about it I didn't view it as essential.

Now I'm thinking about jumping back in. Is it important to catch up on Capaldi's stuff? Is it better than I think it is? Is there essential lore/character building/companion stuff I'd be missing out on? I'm sure there is. For instance missing the Tennant Rose/Martha/Donna stuff would be terrible and missing anything with Smith and Amy/Rory would suck. Not seeing any of the River Song stuff would have been bad. The various Dalek/Cybermen appearances over the various Doctor's lives as well. It all gave context and depth to the show outside the weekly stories and larger arcs. Are there things of that magnitude in the Capaldi seasons? There must be I guess.

Glad people are generally liking the new Doctor. The trailers made me a little worried bc the "feel" of the show under a new Showrunner seemed so different, but it was just a trailer. Plus, I loved Torchwood overall and Broadchurch so that's positive.

I didn’t like it that much. Whittaker is fine, though it seems like the accents are getting thicker and harder to understand (especially bicycle boy).

Over the last couple years, I’ve been liking it less and less, I don’t know why exactly.  And this new showrunner’s style didn’t really click with me. I’ll give it a few more episodes.

I had no interest in Broadchurch.  I disliked Torchwood from the beginning and the longer it went, the worse it got. Barrowman was the only thing that made it tolerable.

The pre- and post-shows blew huge chunks. It was very annoying.

As for the episode itself, I enjoyed it and liked Jodie’s performance, but I wasn’t orgasming like a fan girl over it.
They were making WAY too much about the "first woman Doctor!!!" angle. People have had over a year to digest that ... it's not a fresh take and wasn't worthy of being hammered on constantly.

I liked it.  I am not a super-fan of the series, so no sentimental attachment to any particular Doctor.  Had no problem with a female Doctor.

I am probably in the minority, but Capaldi grew on me. I think his major downfall was lack of vision in terms of companions and and scope. Plus it was the end of a run for most involved... Kind of whimpered.

I will admit, Season 4 on Starz was dreadful.

But Season 3, Children of Men, that was incredible. The sacrifice Jack had to do to save the world was brutal

I think Capaldi was really up and down. I didn't like him at all in the beginning, but the Ashildr arc in season 9 is great. He has some good moments in season 10. I think he was great in his last Christmas special.

I really loved Capaldi. He wasn't the pretty boy that 10 and 11 were; he was closer to Tom Baker and Sylvester McCoy for me.

Using HBO Max to finally watch season 11 with Jodie Whittaker. I like her. Not my favorite doctor but her earnestness is refreshing since Capaldi was a bit dour.

As to the writing... I'd heard that the new show runner Chinball was ruining it with awful stories. Unfortunately that criticism is correct. Four episodes in and it's been wretched. Doesn't sound like it gets better. :sadbanana:

It doesn't.  I didn't watch last season.  The show has been shedding fans with its terrible stories.

The season with Whittaker was pretty crap. She was awesome. I do like her companions, but the stories are garbage.
Yep, exactly.

Watched Arachnids in the U.K. last night.

Let me get this straight - death by suffocation is better than death by gunshot?

I get that Americans are bad and guns are bad and Americans with guns are the WORST but...doctors past would have figured out how to save the spiders. Lazy and juvenile writing.

New Doctor Cast

The BBC have announced Ncuti Gatwa will be the new Doctor Who taking over from Jodie Whittaker.

The Rwandan-Scottish actor - who found fame playing Eric Effiong in Netflix's Sex Education - will become the 14th Time Lord after Whittaker announced she will be leaving the iconic role.

...

Won't matter if they don't write better stories. I heard Whittaker's arc was never really any good.

Russell T. Davies is returning as showrunner, as well, replacing Chris Chibnall.

I don't have the (real-life) timelines for Who exactly memorized ... but I think Davies was showrunner during the David Tennant era and most (if not all?) of the Matt Smith era.

Pretty close, Davies oversaw the initial revival and left when Tennant left. Then Matt Smith and Steven Moffat took over.

Cautiously optimistic with Davies returning, the writing with Whitaker has been awful and Capaldi had to suffer thru a lot of poor scripts too.

Yeah, encouraging news. Although there were a bunch of good Matt Smith episodes, it always felt like a step back in the writing.

The TimelessChildren needs to be retconned out of existence. It destroyed the whole concept of the Doctor.

Yeah, every Dr has had some hit and miss stories, but definitely has been more and more misses the farther along they go.

Oh definitely beyond awful. I don’t think there is a single Who fan out there that isn’t angry about that particular story twist.

Checked some material out from the library. I know The Power of the Doctor precedes the specials currently on Disney+.

Any reason to watch Flux (season 13) and/or Resolution?

Family friend wouldn't leave my wife, and I alone about this show, so we attempted to watch the first few episodes......just couldn't do it.

Like a lot of shows, the first season is uneven. The facts that it's British and Sci-fi don't help.

But once the characters are established and the writing gets better, the David Tennant and Matt Smith years are great. Then Capaldi that's over and the writing once again goes downhill.

Yeah, first season is rough, especially in the special f/x department. Lots of aliens and f/x looked childish and very cheap even at the time it originally aired. Took them a while to find their feet but there are a few gems that season like The Empty Child / Dr Dances two-parter or Dalek or Father’s Day. Would have liked to see Eccleston get another series but David Tennant is so darn good starting with the 2nd series. Matt Smith era is up and down IMO although people generally loved his stint too. I thought Capaldi was great individually but really held back as you said because the writing started to go downhill. Poor Jodie Whitaker just got the ****tiest scripts and direction though, she never had much of a chance.

The Eccleston season drew me in, and I would've liked to have seen another season with him. Tenant is by far my favorite seasons, with Matt Smith a close second. Never cared for Capaldi or Jodie. Whether it was the writing or the acting, I never had the same interest level. I liked the Christmas episodes, mainly for Tenant coming back which was fun. The new doctor shows promise, but I read that his new partner (Holiday?) has already been removed and will be replaced with someone else. I'll have to dig up that article to link here. I'm not going to rush out to watch the new season, but I might catch and episode or two when I get bored.

Same, I completely lost interest during Whitakers stint and just kind of catch up every once in a while when I find the time. I’ll do the same with the new guy unless the positive buzz builds back up. Back during the Tennant days and during much of Smith’s & Capaldi’s runs I tried to never miss the airing of a new episode. Edit: It was tough though what with it being a BBC show and being able to find or have to wait on the episodes sometimes in the States.

I actually liked Flux okay. I'm guessing there was a lot of bad taste the the mouths of Who fans after the Infinite Child (an arc I haven't watched) and it carried over to this series.

It doesn't all fit together and kind of fizzles out at the end, but it was fun watching Whittaker give her best.

Edit: JW's finale, The Power Of The Doctor, was pretty good too.
