Draft Dominator Question (1 Viewer)

So went ahead and downloaded both the Dominator and the magazine app, both look pretty amazing.

This will be my first time using the Dominator, and was wondering when using this during a live draft how seamless is it to add the picks as they happen?

We use ESPN and the time between picks isn't much if trying to follow picks and evaluate my next move if I have to be messing with an app as well.

I've used it and it's very seamless.

This year it's even better, love it and if your the only one in your league using it = Advantage, big time.

I'm really intrigued by Draft Dominator, is it mobile only this year or is desktop version available too?

Does mobile only require wi-fi connection or can it operate offline?

There has always been a desktop version.

I have used it on my laptop every year and loved it. This year I am thinking about using the iPad app but I am not sure if it will allow me to import my customized VBD sheet.

I use the thing religiously and have for years but I have to admit it's tough for me to use it on a 30s draft clock.

My local league are people with printouts and they give me #### for taking the full minute for each pick. I may just print a cheatsheet from DD this year and use that.

But for slow drafts (which I prefer anyway) it's awesome.

When the draft is hosted by MFL, I use the MFL Import app once per round or two (depending on whether I'm near the turn) instead of manually entering the players as they're drafted. It makes things much easier.

You just have to close the DD, run the MFL import (and save the league to the same spot with the same name), then open the DD and it's automatically updated.

The one thing I've asked for for several years now is an easy way to import User ADP. I must not be doing it right as it never works when I modify the file.

I've been doing mocks offline with it, so I would guess you could do real draft without wi fi as well, but you can create a hot spot with your phone if you needed it.

I have the app on my iPad and my phone.

For me, it's easier and quicker than using printed sheets. You just tap the name as they are picked.

Rough guide.

I play a lot with my own projections but the VBD values don't replace lots of mocking and knowing general trends of your specific draft as well as ADP.

I much prefer to have a general strategy that I follow outside of VBD, however fully understanding what the VBD numbers are telling me.

There is no mathematical formula to a good draft.

There are two different products being discussed here. The OP is referring to the Mobile DD app. Some have responded by discussing the PC DD app. The two, while similar, are completely different products in my opinion.

Although I am one of many testers of the Mobile DD app, I personally haven't tested it for a live draft yet, only for mocks. Hopefully other testers could continue to report in with their findings of it's live draft functionality.

Being a very satisfied PC DD app user for many, many years I will again be using it for my live drafts, while also seeing if the functionality of the Mobile DD app works for live drafts. Basically, I'll be using them both at live drafts with greater emphasis placed on the PC DD app as my main drafting tool (for finding suggested selections while on the clock.)

My Team Mock Draft is the best feature for me personally, with the draft day management being very helpful as well.

Importing Projections Dominator is really nice and really helps prepping you for the draft.

Do you follow every pick it tells you to go with or do you more just use it as a guide?
I have toyed with the notion of going with the base rankings but to date I still heavily modify a VBD spread sheet and import that into the DD before my draft.

Since you are one of the testers do you know if it is possible to import a custom VBD sheet into the iPad app?

I've only ever used the phone app which I got about a a month ago. All the PC stuff sounds confusing as hell to me.

I've done about 40+ mocks on the app so far, it's great for being able to do it on the move waiting for a subway, bored in work, even whilst on my exercise bike etc

I've found that it's built my memory up to the point that I instinctively know what is a supposedly great value for every single player in the draft.

I started doing online mocks last week on NFL.com and have had great results so far I think

No idea if I'll use the app during my real draft, worried about being too distracted with various devices during it, would rather trust what I've learned and fully concentrate on my IMac with the draft happening on it.

id be curious to know if there are any reasons to get the app when you have the desktop version of DD. Im pretty comfortable with that.

yeah same. Until the mobile app has identical functionality as the mobile app along with projections dominator I don't see why I would want the mobile app, but I can see it being a nice lighter alternative for some who don't do as much on their own.

I used the Draft Dominator years ago, but in recent years have gone old school, doing my own custom cheatsheets and bringing a single printed sheet of paper to my live drafts. I was thinking of checking out the App, and ditching my paper for a tablet at my live drafts this year.

One question I have is about the rankings. The ad says the rankings are "fully customizable", to your league settings from many different industry experts. However, I'm curious if I am then able to alter those rankings to MY specific preferences. So say after I put in settings/select experts, it has Nick Foles at #7 among QBs. I prefer him at #4 and want to move him there. Is this possible?

Thanks for any help.

Edit: I got some answers on Twitter via the Football Guys App Guy. Kind of hard to transcribe here while I'm on mobile, but the answer appears to be a definite yes, and I'm gonna pick it up later tonight and try it out.

I haven't used the app and I haven't checked out this year's desktop version, but last year's version made it easy to make Foles your #4. They had a spreadsheet of projections and it was very easy to adjust the figures however you see fit. I am far from an expert, but I used my own projections in DD and I had a dream of a redraft year that I'll never be able to replicate.

edit: Just reread your question and it was more app-related than I had initially thought. You've used the desktop version before; you already knew this.

Will the app allow you to import a custom VBD sheet or do you have to do all the editing on the device?

It does not appear you can import any kind of rankings.

I would say yes, all editing needs to be done on the device. It does have a new "FootballGuys Cloud" service that allows you to sync your rankings/dominator among several devices, which is a great feature and a very smart addition.

The re-ranking on the device isn't quite as intuitive as I'd hoped. Instead of simply dragging and dropping a guy above another guy, you've got to click on the guy you want to move, and then slide a slider, changing his expected point total to elevate him above the guy you'd like to place him above. I'd prefer if the points stayed the same as the projections, but still gave me the freedom to move guys around that I just happen to have a feeling on, or a soft spot for.

Also Tiering is a bit of a lost cause on this thing. It does have a automatic tiering algorithm that you can turn on, however, where it is it making the tiers is anyones guess. You can't physically set your own tiers, only create larger point differences between sets of guys in an effort to force them into different tiers. As I said above, changing those point totals isn't the easiest-to-use thing in the world to begin with, so moving groups of guys in order to create tiers probably isn't something I'm going to take the time to do.

Overall though the program is very cool, and I'm gonna try it out during a mock later to see how easy it is for me to keep up when it's on a 45 second timer. I imagine it might be a bit difficult. I'll check in with my findings there.

Love the mobile app this year. I'd imagine that if I had my iPad/Phone and a PC to do a Yahoo/ESPN draft it would work perfectly. The only disadvantage I see is not having as much to search through the database for players. There is nothing better for live drafts. It just gives you a big leg up.

Maybe just me but I found the mobile app cumbersome if you are in a dynasty league or with large number of keepers. I will stick with the desktop version until they get a MFL Import tool for the mobile app similar to the desktop version.........

I haven't got around to mocking on the computer with the device in hand, but I will soon.

Meanwhile, I'm wondering what the data/rankings updates do exactly. Let's say I have the majority of my rankings customized to my liking, as in I've moved around a lot of guys. When one of these updates pushes through, is that going to override my rankings? Or will it only effect guys I haven't touched?

I ask because I'm pretty sure I saw Keenan Allen jump above Pierre Garcon yesterday after an update. I don't think I had moved those two guys previously, so I'm guessing I need to keep an eye on this as updates roll in each day.

Is there a mock draft on the desktop version and a way to tell you what you should pick next on the desktop version?

Perhaps I just need to be more familiar with it.

Have used desktop (PC) version for years. Tried the Mac version, not as robust as the PC, which kinda blows as i would like to run on my MB Air. Just tried the iPad app. Meh. I feel like I'm constantly navigating through the app. I get that there is limited real estate, but I won't use it. Too cumbersome. The desktop version has everything you need, on the screen, all the time.

Best $5 I've ever spent on an app. It's replacing my cheat sheets this year. And I use it as a tool as well, you can't just methodically always pick the top player remaining. That said, it does have a feature where you tell it to customize to the roster you've already picked, and it supposedly tells you the next best player to pick based on availability and your specific needs. I find that it's close, but not 100% correct. The main reasons that it's worth the money, IMO, are the mock drafts and the fact that you can customize so much. You can weight the projections (for instance, if you like Magaw's projections better than Dodd's, you can give Magaw's projections more weight, etc.) You can put in your exact league draft order and give the AI weighted values to pick for the other teams (an assigned value between 1 and 10, so if you know someone who always picks stupidly, you can give their AI a low weight). And the fact that you don't have to print out a new cheat sheet every time you update projections is pretty great. Overall a great app- nice job FBG.

I'm using the mac version. Is the feature where it tells you the next player to pick available in the mac one? I guess I'm just not using the app correctly.

I'm not sure. All I know is that, on the iPhone app, if you go to Draft, at the top of the list of available players there are filter options, and one has 3 arrows pointing downward. If you click on that, it gives you Sorting Options, and you can choose from Dominator Draft Sheet, Value Draft Sheet, Sort By Average Draft Position, Sort By Points Per Game, and Sort By Your Roster's Needs. The last one is the one you're talking about.

Apparently the PC version does not have the most up-to-date algorithm that the Mobile DD has that works more effectively with leagues with Flex spots and they don't know when they are going to update the PC DD with the new algorithm. Having used the PC DD for years and using 2 monitors during my Yahoo drafts have been awesome. I'd rather not "have" to get the Mobile DD to get the new algorithm.

Rankings are still a very subjective thing. I know some people will probably still prefer the current Desktop rankings out of familiarity, but we do plan on applying our newer flex algorithms to that product too. We think these handle flex leagues better.

I'm thinking about downloading this for my ipad to use at a couple live drafts. Will it make a difference if i dont have access to wifi?

Nope, works just fine without it. You wouldn't be able to download the latest updates/projections, but could obviously do that prior to the draft if you needed to.

Tried the mobile DD in a few Yahoo mock drafts, and had a hard time keeping up on both the DD and the draft window. Finally got a FBG pro subscription and the Windows DD, and it's 1000% easier to use along with the draft window.

That said, I still really like the mobile DD for AI mock drafts, so I'll probably get both next year too.

Is there anywhere on DD to view a player's previous year stats? I can only see the projected points and I figured out how to get the player notes to pop up.

I'm curious what you would use this info for during the draft. Previous year stats definitely come into play when I am preparing for the draft and adjusting the rankings as needed and I add to the Notes field what I think I will need during the draft and go from there. There are 3 note fields you can edit for each player that may be useful for you in this regard. I have been using DD to track my draft every year and it is fantastic. We moved to an auction format and that works just as well as a standard serpentine draft.

Not sure if you are using the mobile app, that's all I've been using. If you tap on a player and outlook, it has the staff projections and under that are stats for last 3 seasons.

Using the PC version.

I don't obsess over getting each player in line, so sometimes late in draft it is helpful to be reminded of what a guy did last year stat-wise.

On PC version of Draft Dominator, just right click the player and choose View Web Player Page and it'll open a web browser to the FBG page on him. That will have the rankings, a few previous years worth of stats, links to FBG articles that mention him. You can even view from there the FBG writeups from each game of his in previous seasons if you wanted to see what was going on in game that he dropped off or something.

Question. Does the Draft Dominator use Dodds projections? I ask because as i play with the VBD spreadsheet and DD i notice that the rankings differ a bit. Anyone noticed this?

Used the Dominator App (with my heavily tweaked rankings) tonight for my Live Redraft. Worked wonderfully, and was just such an easy tool to use for picking, tracking, comparing, etc. Drafted with nothing but 1 sheet of paper (for any notes I needed to make) and my tablet. Felt great to have so little "supplies" in the Draft Room. Definitely looking forward to using it next year. Would love if they added drag and drop re-ranking next year.

The mobile DD carries all four sets of staff projections (Dodds, Henry, Tremblay, Wood). It initially uses a weighted average of the four, but gives you the option to change the weighting as you see fit. Want to use 40% Dodds, 40% Wood, 0% Tremblay, 20% Henry? You can do that. Want to use 100% Tremblay? You can do that, too. Want to use 33% Dodds, 47% Henry, 22% Wood, and 18% Tremblay? You can't do that because that adds up to more than 100%, and the laws of mathematics still apply.

I forget what the default weighting is, because I'm constantly shifting between the different weightings just to see what players the various projections are highest on. My guess is that the default weighting is just different than it is for the VBD spreadsheet.

I would love the ability to EASILY change the ADP. Any suggestions on how to do this in the Windows version?
I've never messed with it myself, but I think you just go to the install directory, edit the adp_idp.csv or adp.csv and Import to import the file.

Couldn't figure out how to get it to work and seemed like would be to hard to do seeing you had to add everyones pick... I think it was a waste of 5 dollars and I will never purchase it again... I went back to pen, paper and my cheatsheet... GOOD OLE TIMES... apps ans Bs screw it up.. I may have looked at the cheatsheet a few times but even them seemed wacky. well Not gonna bit.ch to much about 5 dollars but MFL is sneaky.. APP is garbage.
