Draft Note-- Contrary to opinion (1 Viewer)

Aaron's draft threads are a nice resource for those of us hooked on draft talk. The QB, RB, WR, TE threads are being bumped here regularly. If you're not into IDPs but are into the draft the DL, LB, and DB threads are pinned in the IDP forum. I've been updating them as underclassmen declare, and this week...Antonio Cromartie-- pretty much a first rounder and I think a great talent...Richard Marshall-- another probable first rounder and a great talent...Dee Webb-- probably a second rounder, but he is very good...Charles Gordon-- once considered one of the best prospects in the country...Have all declared. The safety class was always pretty decent. The notion that this was a bad year for DBs is no longer valid. Deep deep draft coming our way this April.

Is Jason Allen from the Vols going to be a safety or corner, he missed a lot of the year with injury but was a 1st or 2nd rounder before then.

He has a day one projection. His invite to the combine is as a safety, but he'll be looked at as a corner too. I confess I haven't done my homework on him, and the only Vols' games I saw were ND and LSU; I didn't form an opinion on Allen. Just scanning some links he looks to be in the mix with Blue, Pollard, Harper, and Slay, but well behind Bing Landry and Huff... that's among safeties. Sometimes being a tweener can upgrade a player, sometimes it can hurt. With the little digging I just did, I think he sounds like the type whose fate is attached to his workouts.

Charles Gordon is a great athlete. I didn't see much if any games of theirs this year.. Did he have a good year or what's the buzz from down there in Big 12 country about Gordon? He's supposedly/arguably the best player in the Big 12. Is he a R.W. McQuarters part deux? Or more like Terrence Newman? I know he's dangerous when he gets the ball, but I wonder if he'll be a KR/PR as well in the NFL.

Its a very solid class of CB, but last year's is tough to compare to. Guys like Corey Webster, Justin Miller, Darrent Williams, Dominique Foxworth, and Bryant McFadden, and Ellis Hobbs who all are going to be at least solid starters for years to come, not a one of them was a first rounder. Carlos Rogers, Pac Man Jones, and Antrel Rolle all justified their draft positions as the season went on despite injuries for Rolle and Rogers and choppy play for Jones. Unheralded guys like reynaldo hill and Derrick Johnson even made huge impacts for their teams. I think you're looking at at least 10 long term starters at CB out of this class, which is pretty incredible. Cromartie, Marshall, Webb, and Gordon all seem to be around the same level as the amazing crop of 2nd rounders last year, but they may get in the first because there are no elite CBs in this draft - the elite DBs are S/CB tweeners (huff and williams). So, overall, a respectable class, but weak compared to last year.
