Draft pick compensation in a keeper league? (1 Viewer)

I just finished the first year of a 4 player keeper league. We are trying to determine how to deal with a situation where a team decides they do not want to keep 4 players. Some owners in the league would like to allow teams that do not keep the maximum number of players to pick players from the pool of "unkept" players (as needed to get their roster to 4 players prior to the draft) prior to the draft.I think this is inherently unfair and penalizes teams with good keeper lists b/c it allows an owner who has done a poor job to pick-up (in a sense) the two or three best "unkept" players before the draft begins. If anyone has suggestions about how to best rectify this type of situation, please let me know.

let him either keep 4 players or take an extra draft pick at the end of the draft____________________________________________aquire a 4th keeper by trading a draft pick to another team (ex. swap a 2nd rounder for someone elses 10th rounder and a worthy keeper)________________________________________no way do you allow him to pick up a 4th player from the FA pool prior to the draft.that screws the team with the 1st overall pick. :hot:

Precisely. I would also suggest amending your league rules at some point. This type of issue should be spelled out in the rulebook.

we have a 0-5 keeper league, your choice. We have five rounds where these teams draft whomever they want that is not kept. Usually teams keep at least one or two guys, but most keep 3-5 as they realize that their borderline guys are better than those that will be available. The guys remaining are usually not all that great to choose from as it is 12 guys and you are looking at guys rated around the top 50 that you can choose from(other than a reggie bush this year) . These picks can also be traded for picks etc. Allows bad teams to get better either by trading drafting rookies etc.

If they only keep 3 and they can keep 4, they get an extra pick at the end of draft. Plain and Simple. Good Point on these teams should be making a deal to get the 4th kepper.

We are having this EXACT same discussion right now in my 2x keeper league. It seems a keeper league was a good idea, when you had two good keepers. Several coaches don't like the tough decisions that face them. We are just in the discussion faze, but it looks like the consensus if that you cannot penalize teams who choose to keeper the full amount. In theory it does not make the player pool any shallower, but it still delays a teams choices. In that league some coaches would have three picks prior to my first. Nope. It is not equal opportunity at that point. It is league welfare. However, no one is penalized if the teams pick up players at the end of the draft. You can tell I have a opinion here. I think this little adjustment will have another effect. Off season trades would also cease, as it would be less expensive to wait and be given up an extra pick instead of trading a draft pick to improve a keeper slot.I would not make this change. It would leave you somewhere between a keeper and redraft league. Play one or the other.
