Drafting Online - suggestions for 1st timers? (1 Viewer)

Every year my dynasty league meets locally to draft our 6-round rookie/free agent draft. This year we're having a tough time finding a day we can all make. So I suggested drafting online instead. The Commish wanted to know how long to allow for each pick, how to complete the draft (we use a self-built site, so there's forums to use, but no predrafting ability), etc.

If you have links to your online drafting rules, please post them. Have suggestions on a site we could use just for this purpose, list it. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

MFL lets you setup a league for free still. You can have your draft there. It is pretty good.

Great guys, thanks. I guess the thing I'm really wondering is how to run the draft. For example, I've seen some league allow 12 hours to make a pick. I've seen some only have it run from Monday to Friday. What happens if someone misses a pick? I assume the next team moves up. Rules along those lines.

I use an 8 hr clock, for a 2 round/14 team draft...usually runs into the middle of a second day...you might need to take close to a week (M-F) to get this doneif you use MFL, you'll have the ability to predraft...this would be the way to go

Probably 90% of the fantasy drafts I've done have been online "snail drafts". Simple rules- everyone has a 24-hour timer. If you don't make a pick within your time limit, the next person is on the clock (just like in the NFL). If that person picks, then you don't get another 24 hours, the NEXT person immediately comes on the clock again. This means if you're picking #1 and you miss your pick, it's entirely possible that the draft can get all the way to pick #19 before you finally get it in- so don't miss your pick. If you have a bunch of guys who are active on the weekends, you can disable the timer on the weekends, but I've never had any problems with it.The advantage of the 24-hour timer over the 8-hour timer is that the 24-hour timer means if you check the website once a day, you will never be skipped. The 8-hour timer gets a lot more complicated (because obviously it has to be turned off overnight while everyone's asleep). If you're worried about the draft getting done, don't be. We regularly start 24-round drafts at the beginning of August and have everything good to go by the end of preseason- while 1 pick a day is the minimum, you'll find most days get an entire round or more knocked out.You could always set it up on a FF website and run it there (Fleaflicker is also a nice free site), but I've personally always loved the charm of a message board snail draft. Heck, one year we had our message board go down, and we actually finished the draft over here on FBGs.
