Droughns any long term (1 Viewer)

The guy is on pace for 1200 yards, TDs are more of a factor of Browns Offense. But could Browns come around next year with Edwards, Bryant and Winslow all playing. I really don't see Suggs as a factor at all.Droughns is only 26 and has proved he is just not a product of the Den system.

I think Chester Taylor will be an off-season pickup by CLE and he will be the starter next year. Droughns has played well, but Savage likes Taylor.

The fact that they offer him a contract in the offseason (which Balt matched) shows that they had interest. Droughns is a cheap, serviceable stop gap but not one that will take you anywhere IMO. He's got no real upside or explosiveness and is easily replaced. The Browns will look to improve the RB either through the draft or FA.

Yeah, I thought that they offered the contract to Taylor before they got Droughns? If Droughns isn't a back that your organization wants starting for a few years, I dont see how Taylor is one. IMHO.

Can't a person "think" without a source? :P I believe he's a mediocre back at best. He's not a RB that a coach would gameplan against, he's a RB that that a coach would say: "Let's see if he can beat us."

He's not a great back, but has been performing very well especially considering the lack of support he receives from the rest of the Cleavland offense and defense.

Geez. Everybody wants a link! Here you go. By the way, Chester kicked the Browns' butts in the one game they played this year. Please don't ask for a link. You can find it in the game logs on nfl.com. :P http://www.cleveland.com/sports/plaindeale...0061.xml&coll=2

Browns watching Ravens backfield

Sunday, October 16, 2005

Tony Grossi

Plain Dealer Reporter

An interesting dynamic in Baltimore is worth watching because it could have an impact on the Browns' running back situation in 2006.

Both Ravens' backs, Jamal Lewis and Chester Taylor, can be unrestricted free agents after the season. While the team once intended to lock up Lewis for future years, there have been no contract talks since the season started.

The club may open negotiations at some point this year to credit some of the signing bonus from a potential deal to this year's salary cap. But there has been gradual speculation that Taylor, not Lewis, may be the Ravens' choice as back of the future.

Taylor, 26, had 1,112 yards and a 4.3-yard average in three seasons as Lewis' backup coming into this season. The 2002 sixth-round draft pick from Toledo was a favorite of Phil Savage's. When Savage left the Ravens to be Browns general manager, he tried to steal Taylor, a restricted free agent, by signing him to a cap-unfriendly $3 million offer sheet.

The Ravens had the room to match, and they did. But they can't afford both backs after this season.

"It will be interesting to see which one they choose," Savage said.

Taylor has 110 yards in relief of Lewis this year. His 4.1-yard average, in limited duty, is a full yard better than Lewis' 3.1.

Some believe that Ozzie Newsome, Ravens general manager, has soured on Lewis as a long-term back. Lewis has 5,763 yards and 33 rushing touchdowns in his first four full seasons in Baltimore. He also is one strike away from a one-year NFL suspension.

Newsome said the team has always taken care of its players and has pointed out he can always use the franchise tag to keep Lewis if a new deal can't be worked out.

What does this have to do with the Browns? It's possible they would make another run at Taylor in free agency after the season. Taylor's agent hinted at that after the Ravens matched their offer in March.

Savage and coach Romeo Crennel both favor having two starting-caliber backs.

Reuben Droughns and William Green are signed through 2006 and Lee Suggs is signed through 2007. But the cap costs in terminating the contracts are minimal.

Savage did not dispute Suggs' history of injuries will play a factor in the team's plans.

"I don't know how they don't play a factor," he said. "But any player with an injury history, you have to be careful. Sometimes they emerge as great players when they get over their injuries. We certainly haven't given up on Lee."

We'll see.

Droughns is among the leaders in yardage. If he scored an average number of TDs, then he would be a top 10 back this season. For comparison, here is Thomas Jones stats, who ranks in the Top 10:167/753/6 TD 17/66/0Reuben Droughns:162/702/1 TD 25/251/0Droughns is better than most fantasy owners give him credit for. The Browns play calling inside the red zone is the problem - not Droughns.

Droughns may not be an elite guy, but that might not be critical for the offense that Crennel is trying to build. Presumably, Romeo would like a move-the-chains type of guy who can block well - attributes that certainly seem to describe Droughns.Put a better QB in there next year along with a year of seasoning for Edwards and another playmaker or two (Winslow?) and you may have a recipe for future success for Droughns. That said, it also wouldn't shock to see Romeo go after a top-tier back if available.

I think Droughns is a solid player, he plays with desire and power. He will be a starter somewhere.
I had my doubts coming into this season....the whole Denver RB system debate and I really did not get to see much of Droughns. But now that I've watched him for 10 games or so, he's really impressed me. He's a darn good RB (runs hard, good vision and blocking skills, rarely gets taken down by one defender usually gaining nice YAC, etc). I agree he should be a starter somewhere.

On a side note,

Watching him level Ms PacMan last Sunday after the screen/dump off pass was overthrown was great. I wish I had a clip. I think Terrelle also crushed him in the game too.

Interesting.

D-R-O-U-G-H-N-S Top 10 RB in 2006. Browns have Edwards, Antonio, Winslow and your first Clev Brown RB to rush over 1000 yards

I think at this point Reuben has to be considered one of the most underrated backs in the league. He is getting better every single week. He blocks and catches passes out of the backfield. As far as value to his team, I would definitely rank him top ten. In our league he is a top 15 RB, even though he's only scored twice, and is ahead of Dillon, CMart, Bell, R Brown, FWP and many others who seem to get a lot more respect. I have owned Droughns all season and am glad to have him. He is a solid RB2 that has helped me to first place.

No real upside? He's going to be the first Browns back to rush for over 1000 yards in over a decade. Do you actually watch him or do you just look at stats? They love him there. Suggs and Green have been busts and they need to secure another back... Taylor would be a good fit. Droughns runs hard and breaks tackles. Not every running back needs to run a 4.2 40. Most teams would rather have a guy that could pound the ball 20+ times a game and wear down D's.

Droughns has great vision, power, a great spin move, good speed, is a great receiver. Hes definitely the Browns featured RB next year.

Several NFL coaches like him. He was one of Seattle's first options if Alexander had left. He was the second choice in Cleveland. Denver went after him and kept him around a few years. Detroit spend a first day draft pick on him but cut him due to injuries. Next year's rookie draft wont be as deep as the last couple. Droughns will likely start somewhere if not Cleveland. At worst, he'll split carries with a smaller guy like Suggs or Taylor. At best, he could end up as the man in Seattle next year. Heck, being the man in Cleveland is no longer a bad thing. They are building the Browns the right way. The first thing they did was overhaul both lines. I'm optimistic about Cleveland. I think we'll see them spend money everywhere except quarterback. That's good news for the running game.

Got to watch my first Browns game today. This guys reminds me of Priest Holmes the way he moves. I think the TDs will come in time as the team matures. The have a great D in the making and some nice offensive pieces.I have him in a 4 player keeper league, I am more optimistic about him than my other two "stud" RBs next year, Kev Jones and McAllister. After today he is on pace for 1600 total rush /rec yards and 6 TDs! This is also not his first time having a big year either. The guy is real

any thoughts after the man went over 1000 yards and is on pace for 1700 combined yards, give him 6 more TDs and you have yourself a top 10 back.

:goodposting: he's been hobbled by injuries lately, but the man is running behind a poor line and doing very well, averaging 4.1 per carry..

He's almost certainly the back in Cleveland next year:- first time in 2 decades a guy has rushed for over 1000 yards- gives props to his blockers who like him- makes sure he rewards the blockers, a class move.- is actually an decent receiver to boot- Frye is the QB next year, so stability at RB would be good

ok season over for most, what about Droughns in 06. Is he top 20, 15 or 10 material?
Depends on a couple of things. As is he is a top 15 back. But, if Cleveland shores up the "O" line and commits to Frye as their QB, and if they have a decent backup I would take him top 10. I had him on my team for most of this year and he was a great RB2. The main problems were that they couldn't get him any room inside the 20 and, because Green and Suggs were both hurt most of the year, he played almost every down and started to wear out late in the season.

Droughns will be the starter , if he is just a serviceable player and easily replacable why is he the only RB in Cleveland that rushed for a 1000 yds in the last 20 years .Cmon guys the guy is a legit ( better than average ) Rb in the NFL and they will sign him to a long term contract.I dont think lots of RB in the league right now could run for 1250yds with the Browns , ( Look at Kevin Jones 1 year fluke , Lamont Jordam with is 3,3 ypc average ) both those guys could not run in Cleveland for 1200 ydd and they are considered as studs please .

So he finished with 1600 total yards and 2 TDs, good for 14th in my league. Just 3 or 4 more TDs and he is top 10.What do you think about him in 06?
