Dual Topic Threads (or "DTT's"): interesting new concept (1 Viewer)

With more people starting new threads last week the board was as lively and interesting as it's been in a while. In an effort to keep the momentum going I came up with something over the weekend that I believe could increase the excitement even more. It's a concept called Dual Topic Threads or DTT's for short. Here's how it works: The thread starter will include two unrelated topics in the thread title. Post 1 of the thread will be in relation to the first topic, post 2 in relation to the second. The form would look like this:

(Thread title): Topic One / Topic Two (note the slash between topics)

(Post 1) Relating to topic one*

(Post 2) Relating to topic two*

(* it should be noted that the thread starter would have the first two posts in a DTT, the first dealing with topic one, the second with topic two)

The thread would then continue as normal with people discussing either topic at any point in the thread. People can comment on both topics in a DTT but should be encouraged not to discuss both topics in a single post unless appropriate**.

So an actual DTT would look like this:

(Topic)

Which granola is best? / Clemson dining hall apologizes for Mexican night

I'm on a recent granola kick and have been eating the Bare Naked brand granola. It's OK but expensive. It seems healthier than some of the other granola sold by the big food companies. What kind do you guys prefer? Which brands are healthiest? Where do you guys buy your granola?

Did you guys see this? Clemson apologized for serving Mexican food. Apparently some students were offended that the dining hall had Mexican night because it reduced an entire culture down to their food and hats. I guess eating ethnic food in college is offensive now?
Pros:

- Potentially doubles the discussion topics on the front pages

- Users read and learn about topics they may not normally be interested in

- Threads packed with more information ("fatter" threads)

- Higher likelihood of new thread generating interest

- More difficult to clog forum with redundant discussions

- Users more likely to engage other users they may not normally engage with

- Reduces time browsing forum for topics while increases time participating in discussion

- Interesting new concept

Cons:

- Potentially difficult to fit two topic descriptions in single topic line

**Although very rare, there may be a single post where a user could intertwine both topics. Using the example above, if there was a brand of Mexican granola that was someone's favorite, they could share that information (relating to topic #1) and wonder if Clemson could serve it in their dining halls without offending anyone (relating to topic #2). A post like this is known as a "Brunch" post (or Brunching). Brunching should happen organically and not be attempted just for the sake of attempting.

Thanks guys

Another positive would be the guys who start threads when they break awkward wind will have to wait for something else to happen to them before they post. You can't just plop a thread whenever with DTT's.

This is genius innovation BTW, and it will change the way the innerwebs run going forward. Thanks you Kenny Powers!

These are about pop up more and more. Please brush up on the form in the first post. If you're a confused reader, all of the info in that first post. 2X's the action in the forum. Time to get on this train.
