Duckett to Detroit

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that running back T.J. Duckett has agreed to terms with the Detroit Lions.

Duckett will sign a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Lions.

The maneuver gives the Lions three starting-caliber tailbacks -- Duckett, Tatum Bell, and Kevin Jones. We've previously heard that Bell, who was acquired recently from the Broncos as part of the Dre' Bly trade, is a candidate to be traded again.

Duckett did the deal with Detroit after visiting the Seahawks.

Referring to Duckett and Bell as starting-caliber tailbacks does make me question the veracity of the report...

Things are certainly lively in Detroit this offseason.

I am indifferent about TJ coming in... I dunno.

As a kevin jones owner this makes me happy because it gives more possibility to the trade of tatum bell. As a duckett owner its not so bad either

Since when has TJ Duckett been considered a starting-caliber tailback?

Someone else mentioned this in another Lions or KJ thread - "Maybe the Lions know something more about the degree of severity of KJ's injury than they are letting on." This would make the signing of Duckett and Bell easier to understand.

Or they are trading Tatum :banned:Who knows what is going on in Detroit....Martz may run the wishbone

The trading for Bell and the signing of Duckett seem more like "hedging their bets" signings rather than "KJ is down for the long count" signings to me.

I see this as good thing,no true stud RB. Just a fill till Jones is back. Then again this is the Lions :banned:

trading tatum? *lol* unlike FF, you don't sign guys, then trade them 2 weeks later. Bly is almost refusing to play, so he's the exception. Bell is excited about getting his shot as the starter. You don't sign Duckett then deal Bell, making Duckett your starter for the first part of the year?I mean seriously, slow down people.

Clearly this is a ploy to, well, you know.....

i like it. The Lions haven't had a goal line back in, well, forever. Duckett is a great power guy. he could fit in well.

I really think someone's going to win this job. RBBC is just not the way the NFL tends to work, as compared to years past.

Until KJ returns, I really think it's Tatum, then Duckett for goalline work (possibly). But, there's not going to be a 50/50 split. That is worried about way too much, IMO, and doesn't happen very often at all.

ETA: The 50/50 type split happens these days mainly with rookie RBs.

Yea, I guess I was out of line, considering there were numerous articles that they were shopping him to the Giants and others noting the Packers were interested...

I know people don't like Duckett, but he was behind Portis and Betts in Washington and was a terrible fit in Atlanta as anything but a goal line back because teams always committed an extra man to the box for Vick anyways. Big men need a passing game to keep the defense honest. The Lions may actually have that. I'm not saying he'll start, or even if he did that he'd be a stud by any means, but the Lions don't seem to like Tatum Bell as a starter any more than Denver did, and are looking to trade him. Duckett may have some value this year.

:(In other words, it's not 'seriously, slow down people.' It's 'seriously, keep up billyjoe.'

Yea I'm glad you made us all see the light and listen to you, instead of those silly news reporters

how many Rbs do they have now :scared: :( what a F'ed up organization
They now have two healthy rbs--Tatum and Duckett. Next question? The Lions entire rb squad, aside from the two new guys, is currently on injured reserve with severe injuries. Try to keep up--and do so before posting.

This is what I don't get.... "silly reporters" if info is being leaked that there are talks between teams for Bell?ETA: This signing, imo, is more evidence that they could be moving Bell... that's what my post was alluding to. The "silly reporters" posted their stories earlier in the week.

It appears the RB Coach was jealous that the WR coach was getting so much attention each year during the draft. So, he said I want some toys too.

so 2 RBs that could not make it in the best running systems in the NFL are the answer to the Lions running game if KJ cannot go in 2007  :lmao:

Fantasy football aside, I hope that TJ has much success in Detroit. I really respect how he handled being traded to the Redskins at the 11th hour last year only be stuck on the bench behind Portis and then Betts with very few opportunities to play. He handled it with nothing but class and not once did he say anything negative or disruptive.

This thread = the Lion backfield

both are trainwrecks

The price was right for Duckett but there is no way any one of these three backs ends up even being a #2 fantasy back.

That seems odd to me. KJ was a solid rb1 when healthy last year in Martz' system. Am I missing something?

neither tater or duckett are good #1 rb's, but i still don't think this looks good for kj.
Your conclusion (i still don't think this looks good for kj) doesn't seem to make logical sense given your supposition (neither tater or duckett are good #1 rb's).Edit to add: If anything, I'd say things don't look good for Calhoun.

Duckett has shown a knack for scoring TDs, he has a very good converstion rate in the red zone... this isn't good news for Bell or Kevin Jones owners.

Detroit can't run anyways, they ditched the run last year. This just makes the whole running game even more less appealing than it already was.

I've learned to listen when the "Holy Roler" sees an issue. Once again, I agree with your flawless logic. With KJ and Calhoun both on the mend, with favorable reports coming out about the progress of the former, it would have seemed completely sensible to bring in a Dillon-type of seviceable older back who can just buy enough time for the young fella's to get healthy. As it is, they are investing too much in young backs (bell and Duckett are the same age!) and will have to make some difficult decisions down the road. I'm a rare bird on this issue, but I think that Bell and Duckett are excellent backs. I also think that Calhoun had huge potential before he was hurt. So if KJ and Calhoun come back healthy, the lions will have at least 3 frustrated backs in an offense that hasn't been able to sustain drives long enough to make any offensive player enough chances, let alone several. Finally, if you are KJ or Calhoun, what do you do at this point? Work your tail off to heal and then what? Ride pine or share carries? I think the Lions really overcompensated on this one and will pay in many ways down the road.

i can see why that doesn't make sense.it's just my opinion that tater and duckett are overrated and i wouldn't trust either as a #1 rb. detroit may think differently. because they may think differently, and also becasue they continue to add rb's, kj being ready for 2007 doesn't appear to me as being promising.

very good point on calhoun though.
