Dutch airlines KLM stirred things up after the Netherland's World Cup win over Mexico tweeting a picture of a departure gate and the tagline of "Adios Amigos".

Not surprisingly, twitter blew up with people saying they'd never fly the airline again to saying KLM apparently didn't get the FIFA anti racism message.

I always like a reality check (or a FFA check which is pretty far from a reality check) on stuff like this so I ask you guys: How offensive was the tweet?

Edit to add: the graphic with the departure sign also included a small sombrero and mustache. You can see it in the article link.

"Adios Amigos" was playful trash talk.

The bandito mustache, sombrero, and bandana was a bit much.

The Mexican soccer team and fans have pretty much no right to get offended at anything soccer related that other countries dish at them.

It was the sombrero and mustache that caused the problem not the adios part.
Again, stupid. If you go to Mexico, there will be a thousand guys trying to sell you sombreros. Yet if you put one on, that's offensive.

"They said "goodbye, friends"! Racists!"

Oddly, I'm guessing probably no one from Mexico was offended. Mostly white people from the US? Am I right?

From the article Joe linked, "Among those was Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal, who laid into the airline and vowed, in a colorful way, never to fly it again. '@KLM I'm never flying your ####ty airline again. #### you big time.' "

Sombreros and moustaches are offensive now?

From the comments:

"I am Mexican. Was the loss heartbreaking? Yes. Should a team ever lose like that? No. Was the call questionable? Yes. Do I take offense to the tweet? No. Maybe I have just been Americanized but I don’t know Mexicans trash talk a lot too. Who cares.."
"Hmm, I'm Mexican and am not offended at all..."
Love the hypocrisy by some especially the actor's tweet. Being a Mexican I know for a fact that if Mexico had won.. and a Mexican airline would've done something similar towards the Dutch, a lot of people, and that actor.. would've loved it!! Nothing worse than someone who loves to make fun of people, in a good way, but can't take it when rolls are reversed. Grow a little thicker skin people.. it was just in fun!!
I'm half Mexican, and I'm going to sue!! Kidding, I'm not suing, and I am not offended in the least bit.
So every Mexican fan can yell "P u to!" when the opposing goalie takes a goal kick, but they get offended by this?

:lmao: @ mustaches being racist towards Mexicans now.

brohans i think that mexico chanted osama at the usa team so hey you get what you reap take that to the bank brostachios

How does compare to when after USA beat Ghana, Delta tweeted "2-1" with the Statue of Liberty behind the 2 and a giraffe behind the 1?

Does it affect your opinion if you know there are no giraffes in Ghana?

Spot on.

Mexico fans chanted "Osama! Osama!" at our team once. When they played Iran, they chanted "U.S.A.! U.S.A.!" They've been known to throw bags of piss at other team's players. And then there's the puto thing which has caused controversy but is tame by their standards.

I think there is at least one FBG that will be offended and then make this about themself... This person will not be of Mexican decent either.

offensive in the sense that it shows poor sportsmanship

ETA.....didn't see the graphic before, but, yes, it's a tad racist too

The first one to complain was a Mexican actor IIRC.

I could certainly understand some people being offended by it, with the picture being more of an issue than the phrase. Although in this case, I feel like the majority of the outrage is likely coming because it is tied to smack talk from a World Cup game.

If KLM had just started flying direct to Mexico, and they posted that same little caricature and an arrival gate with a very positive "Hola Amigos!" to announce the news, I'm not sure how many would get offended.

By the way there is a difference between some fan being a doosh at a game or even a bunch of them and a corporate twitter account. Hopefully most of you don't run your companies social media accounts as you apparently have no clue about said difference.

US Airways wishes they had someone with the discretion of KLM's social media brand manager.

:goodposting:

My takeaway is that Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal is a huge fan of the Mexican national team.
I hope Aeromexico retaliates with a picture of a tulip smoking a joint and falling over without contact.
I endorse this hypothetical tweet.

Good point

If they quoted Maya Angelou as the one saying "Adios Amigos", then I would applaud them for using an authentic Mexican in their campaign.

That part isn't offensive either. If the Dutch had lost, and a Mexican company produced a similar picture with a Dutchman wearing clogs and looking all Dutch, not a single person anywhere would be offended.

That's pretty ignorant on Delta's part

On behalf of giraffes everywhere, I'm outraged.

yeah, they really stuck their neck out on that one

Not really offensive, but some pretty painful salt in the wound. Dumb thing for a business to do.
Exactly correct imo. I don't think anyone is seriously complaining of racism or other offensiveness, just a bit too soon for Mexicans who suffered a very painful defeat.
