[Dynasty] 2018 Draft Class (1 Viewer)

ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay both listed San Diego State RB Rashaad Penny as a player who "raised more questions than he answered" after his week of Senior Bowl practice.

Kiper listed Penny as one of his potential sleepers coming into the Senior Bowl, but neither he nor McShay had much positive to say about his week. "We know Penny can run -- he rushed for 2,248 yards in 2017 -- but he needed to show that he could do the little things, and that didn't happen," writes Kiper. "He also struggled in pass protection." McShay was similarly harsh, saying that he thought Penny would be the top back here, and that it "simply wasn't the case." Fortunately for the former Aztec this is just three days of practice, but it doesn't sound like he improved his stock in Mobile.

I know some people have been on the penny bandwagon, @BigTex comes to mind. Are you worried about the complimentary parts of the game? Is he more than a 2 down banger (which can certainly have value) than a 3 down guy? I’ve only watched some highlights, don’t remember seeing him catch other than in the return game. I’m hoping penny or freeman find their way to the lions in the mid rds, for real football purposes anyway.

I’m by no means an “expert” far from it actually. I just have learned over time what to filter and what to maintain when it comes to prospects. I’ve been following Sony since he was 15/16 and I love his game but Penny is the real deal. I have him pegged right behind Barkley along with Guice. He’s a 3 down back that can carry the load.

1. He’s 5-11, 220 pounds he’s built to carry the load.

2. At one point he had 5 straight 200yd games......that’s right 5! He had over 2,200 yards rushing last season. Proving he can carry the load.

3. Over 4 yards a carry AFTER contact! WOW!! This shows he won’t be coming off the field on 3rd and short or goal line downs. Again, showing his an every down back.

4. He’s #1 in this class with 74 forced missed tackles.

5. He scored 2 TDs on kickoff returns and 1 TD on a punt return this dude is Fire and there’s no denying it. (Remember he’s 5-11, 220 pounds)

6. Draft accordingly and stay thirsty my friend!

After watching some more tape I like what I see but still don’t know if he can pass block. I’m still a little wary- this is the same offense that made pumphrey the ncaa all time leading rusher, so I take the production with a grain of salt. Landing spot will make a ton of difference in this class at all the spots- talented group of rookies but how they are used by the team that draft them will move some guys up and down. I have chubb ahead of him, and view him similarly to michel and jones. I like freeman a lot too, he reminds me of Terrell Davis the way he runs laterally then explodes through the line. He looks like he could excel in a 1 cut zone system.

I get what you’re saying and it’s valid but very minimum in this case. What I mean is punt returns and kick off returns for TDs has nothing to do with what type of system you’re in, that’s on the players talent. YAC IS ALL YOU! and he had 4.26 YAC, again nothing to do with the system then he’s #1 in this class with 74 forced missed tackles that’s based off of being elusive....yet again that’s the talent of the player and has nothing to do with the system.

Ive been following Penny during this week and he’s been returning punts and running routes. He has really good hands. STUD.

I can't say anything is definitive from Senior bowl practice but I came away feeling like I confirmation bias on a player I was not high on, got feedback that suggests I was to low on a player others were higher on got woke to someone I was straight sleeping on.

Penny was the guy I was not high on, Washington is the guy I now feel like I was to low on, and Daesean Hamilton is the guy I got woke on.

 
Wyoming QB Josh Allen completed 9-of-13 passes for 158 yards and two touchdowns for the North in a 45-16 loss to the South on Saturday in the Reese's Senior Bowl.

The first 30 minutes for Allen were borderline terrible. He missed on several throws, and didn't look comfortable in the pocket. In the second half, however, the 6-foot-4, 237-pound signal-caller made the NFL throws that make him so intriguing. He went 7-for-8 in that final thirty minutes, and made two beautiful throws in the back corner for touchdowns. Allen was inconsistent in practices, but you definitely see why so many believe he has the most potential of any QB in this class. We'd have to call this a positive in his draft development.

Richmond QB Kyle Lauletta completed 8-of-12 passes for 198 yards and three touchdowns on Saturday for the South in a 45-16 victory over the North in the Reese's Senior Bowl.

Lauletta ended up being the game's MVP for his performance. There were concerns about the former FCS quarterback's arm strength, but he certainly looked like he had an NFL-caliber arm on Saturday. He showed that he can make all sorts of throws in the game, completing one touchdown on a bomb, one on a slant, and one on a scramble near the end zone. Lauletta was given a fourth-to-fifth round grade by Todd McShay for his strong play, and he didn't do anything in the Senior Bowl to suggest that grade was inaccurate.

LSU WR D.J. Chark caught five passes for 160 yards with a touchdown for the South in a 45-16 victory over the North in the Reese's Senior Bowl on Saturday.

Chark had a strong week of practice, and the 6-foot-2, 196-pound wideout was even better in the game. His touchdown was a 75-yard bomb from Richmond's Kyle Lauletta where he showed off his impressive speed down the sidelines. Chark didn't put up monster numbers for LSU in his senior year, but blame that on quarterback play more than what he did or didn't do. It'd be a surprise if he was still on the board after the second round, and he has a real chance of going on Day 1 if he tests as well as many expect.

San Diego State RB Rashaad Penny ran for 64 yards on nine carries and caught a 73-yard touchdown pass for the South in a 45-16 victory over the North on Saturday in the Reese's Senior Bowl.

Penny (5'11/224) did not have a strong week of practice, with multiple outlets reporting that he was among the more disappointing players during the week. He didn't disappoint on Saturday. His 73-yard touchdown from Kurt Benkert showed that he's a capable receiver out of the backfield, and he consistently found holes when handed the ball. It's a strong running back class, but even with the poor practices, Penny still likely goes on Day 2, with a strong chance of going in the second round.

Arizona State RB Kalen Ballage ran for 57 yards on 10 carries for the North in a 45-16 loss to the South in the Reese's Senior Bowl on Saturday.

Ballage (6'2/222) looked like the best player on the North squad at times on Saturday, and that backs up the strong week of practice he put together in Mobile. His long gain was a 16-yarder, but he consistently put together four-to-five yard runs for the North squad. Ballage at times disappointed in his time with the Sun Devils and had some injury issues, but there's no denying the talent. He's worked himself into mid-round consideration at this point.

Southern Miss senior RB Ito Smith rushed for 35 yards on nine carries for the South in a 45-16 victory over the North on Saturday in the Reese's Senior Bowl.

Smith (5'9/201) also caught two passes for two yards on the game. The former USM star wasn't mentioned as a standout this week during Senior Bowl practices, but he had a nice game in Mobile, albeit mostly in the "garbage time" portion of the contest. Teams are going to be concerned about his size and lack of breakaway speed, but the vision is obvious, and he's a good receiver. His third-down abilities make him a late-round candidate.

Iowa RB Akrum Wadley carried the ball eight times for 38 yards for the North in a 45-16 loss to the South in the Reese's Senior Bowl on Saturday.

Disappointingly, Wadley wasn't a factor in the pass game; a facet that so many analysts pointed out that was a strength during Senior Bowl practices. Still, the 5-foot-10, 186-pound tailback ran the ball hard, and his 15-yarder showed off his vision and ability hit the hole hard. It's a loaded draft class of tailbacks, but someone is going to fall in love with Wadley's style and swoop him up at some point on Day 3.

NC State RB Jaylen Samuels ran for 37 yards on 10 carries and caught two passes for 14 yards for the North in a 45-16 loss to the South on Saturday in the Reese's Senior Bowl.

Samuels (5'11/224) had a strong week of practice while playing tailback; a position that he didn't play often for the Wolfpack. He's basically a tight end in a tailbacks body, but he looked competent as a runner out of the backfield at times in Mobile on Saturday. What a team views Samuels is will determine his draft position, but most project him to be a mid-round pick, with a chance to be off the board before the end of Day 2.

LSU RB Darrel Williams ran for 20 yards on five carries for the South in a 45-16 victory over the North on Saturday in the Reese's Senior Bowl.

Williams did have a 16 yard gain, but was stuffed on his other four carries for the South squad. While it wasn't a great game for the former LSU backup, it was a strong week of practice for the 5-foot-11, 229-pound bruiser. We've seen tailbacks from the school go on to have productive career despite not being starters, and Williams could continue that lineage. He's a name to watch over the next few months.

Western Kentucky QB Mike White completed 8-of-11 passes for 128 yards and a touchdown for the South in a 45-16 victory of the North on Saturday in the Reese's Senior Bowl.

White was one of the players that analysts were most excited to see play in the Senior Bowl, and he didn't disappoint in the game. His touchdown pass opened the scoring; a 14-yard pass to UCF wide receiver Tre-Quan Smith in the middle of the first. He dropped in several more impressive throws on the day, and looked comfortable in the pocket. White played in a system that wasn't very NFL-like, so his tape is going to be important in events like this. If he continues to impress through his pro day and the NFL Combine, he could compete with Luke Falk and Kyle Lauletta to be the "next" quarterback off the boards after the big names go.

UCF WR Tre'Quan Smith caught five passes for 79 yards and a score for the South in a 45-16 victory over the North on Saturday in the Reese's Senior Bowl.

Smith's touchdown was the first of the game, coming on a 14-yard strike from WKU QB Mike White in the first quarter. He made several other big plays on the game, and showed that he's improved his route-running while still having the big-play ability. Smith didn't always flash during Senior Bowl practices according to reports, but he didn't do anything that suggest he won't be off the board after the first 100 or so selections.

That's not what a 3 down back is.  He needs to be a factor in the passing game.  I know he had the huge TD today and it was a nice catch, but he needs to improve his pass blocking and I don't know how much of a natural receiver he is.  There's no question to me he's a stud with the ball in his hands, and if this were 2007 he'd be a top tier candidate, but he's got a lot more to prove in the passing game.  If he can prove it the sky's the limit because he's an outstanding runner.

 
Colorado State WR Michael Gallup hauled in three passes for 60 yards for the North in a 45-16 loss to the South on Saturday in the Reese's Senior Bowl.

Gallup (6'1/198) had his biggest play on a 31-yard strike from Josh Allen on a crossing route. His biggest play could have been a touchdown, but UNC cornerback M.J. Stewart knocked the ball out of Gallup's hands at the last moment. Still, a strong game for the former Colorado State star that followed a strong three practices in Mobile. He's an analytical darling, so if he tests only okay in the next few months, he's going to be off the board before the end of round three.

Penn State TE Mike Gesicki caught three passes for 39 yards for the North in a 45-16 loss to the South on Saturday in the Reese's Senior Bowl.

Gesicki (6'5/242) was mostly held in check in this one, but the game was secondary, and the former Penn State star was excellent during his Senior Bowl practices. There's still time to go, but because of his receiving skills and his ability to block inline, he just might have jumped to the top of the tight end rankings -- if he wasn't there anyway. Depending on how the combine and his pro day/workouts go, he just might go in those first 32 selections.

Oklahoma State WR Marcell Ateman caught one pass for a fourteen-yard touchdown on Saturday for the South in a 45-16 victory over the North in the Reese's Senior Bowl.

Ateman's lone catch was impressive; a touchdown throw from Senior Bowl MVP Kyle Lauletta that showed off Ateman's impressive frame (6'4/216) and ability to separate from a defensive back. The Oklahoma State wideout wasn't consistently named a star during Senior Bowl practices, but he had a strong final year for the Cowboys, and some believe he's a better pro prospect than fellow OSU wide receiver James Washington. We'll see if that remains the case over the remaining draft months.

Seems like Penny stock was dropping after the senior bowl week. Questions about pass blocking could be an issue especially as a rookie. However, he looked good in the game so not sure how this will shake out. Let’s hope he has a good combine. I thought he looked good on the YouTube videos I watched.

Penn State WR DaeSean Hamilton caught one pass for five yards for the North in a 45-16 loss on Saturday to the North in the Reese's Senior Bowl.

It was a disappointing game for Hamilton, although at least some of the blame has to go with Josh Allen's poor first half and Tanner Lee's poor play all together. It's just disappointing to see him not follow up what was reported to be an outstanding week of practices in the game on Saturday. As we've said many times, the game is secondary, however, and virtually every draft analyst sung his praises for his work in the Senior Bowl practices. Assuming he stays healthy and shows out during the combine and pro days, he's a lock for the first three rounds.

Central Michigan TE Tyler Conklin caught two passes for 20 yards and scored a touchdown for the North in a 45-16 loss to the South on Saturday in the Reese's Senior Bowl.

Conklin's touchdown came on a beautiful throw from Josh Allen to open the scoring in the second half. The throw was great, but the catch was pretty good, as he had to get his two feet down in the back of the end zone. Conlins doesn't have the elite athleticism you see in early-round tight ends, but he's been a solid performer, and had a productive week in Mobile. Even if he's not the first of his position off the board, he has a chance to be among them on Day 3.

UFC TE Jordan Akins snagged two passes for 31 yards for the South in a 45-16 win over the North on Saturday in the Reese's Senior Bowl.

Akins showed off his receiving skills on both catches, and it's a solid -- if not spectacular -- end to a week where the 6-foot-3, 246-pound tight end impressed many draft pundits. The only thing that could limit his draft stock is his blocking, but for teams that are looking for a receiving tight end that could be a threat in the end zone, he could go in the first 100 selections if he continues to impress over the coming months.

Iowa State WR Allen Lazard caught two passes for seven yards for the North in a 45-16 loss to the South on Saturday in the Reese's Senior Bowl.

Lazard's two catches were both short-yardage hauls, and he didn't really get a chance to put his size (6'4/227) to work on Saturday. Fortunately for the former Iowa State top target, he did get a chance to impress over the week, and for the most part, analysts were impressed with his work. He does need to work on bringing in passes on a more consistent rate (a nice way to say he drops too many passes) but his possible red-zone threat skills make him an intriguing Late third, early Day 3 selection come draft time.

Western Kentucky TE Deon Yelder caught one pass for one yard and a touchdown for the South in a 45-16 victory over the North in the Reese's Senior Bowl on Saturday.

If you're only going to catch one pass, and you're only going to pick up one yard, you might as well make it a touchdown, right? Yelder's score came on a scramble near the end zone from Richmond QB/Senior Bowl MVP Kyle Lauletta. While he wasn't a big factor in the gameplan, he did have a strong week of practice, outplaying many of the other tight ends on the roster. The 6-foot-4, 255-pound tight end might have worked himself into early Day 3 consideration.
