Rotoworld Draft Profile

Dolphins traded up with the Bucs to select Virginia Tech WR Isaiah Ford with the No. 237 overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft.

Ford (6’1/194) needed only three years to set Virginia Tech school records in receptions (210), receiving yards (2,967), and receiving scores (24), starting 37 games and averaging 14.1 yards per catch. A prep basketball star who averaged 37 points per game as a high school senior, Ford managed a 4.61 forty at the Combine but shined in the three-cone drill (6.94) and broad jump (10’7"). Ford’s biggest drawback is his rail-thin body, which should continue to fill out as he just turned 21. He reminds of Tajae Sharpe with some flashes of Marvin Jones.

POSITIVES

Isaiah Ford is a polished route-runner who can win at the line of scrimmage and down the field. He had back-to-back 75-catch 1,000-plus receiving-yard seasons at Virginia Tech. He has good feet and uses them to beat press coverage. He gets good separation on intermediate routes with his ability to drive back to the ball. Often, on his deep targets the defenders stay on his hip and he must make spectacular catches, which he flashes the ability to do. As he showed with his broad jump of 127 inches, Ford has explosive leaping ability that he uses to outjump defenders He has great body control in the air and near the sidelines, showing nice adjustments to the football. His combination of size, leaping ability and body control give him an excellent catch radius. Using his size, he muscled defensive backs down the field and could gain hidden yardage after the catch.

NEGATIVES

Ford needs to improve at catching the football. He has concentration drops, lets the ball get into his body and at times won't high-point the football. He needs to be more consistent using his size and leaping ability to high-point it; too often his catch point gave the defender a chance to break up the play. Ford profiles as a deep threat but lacks the ideal speed (4.61-second 40) to get consistent separation. He relies on his feet at the line of scrimmage too much and will need to develop the ability to win hand fights at the point of attack. Improving his strength could allow him to improve at the line of scrimmage and in hand fighting down the field. Too often versus press coverage corners forced him close to the sideline. He needs to improve his blocking as well, as too often defenders beat him by out-muscling him.

Patriots acquired WR Isaiah Ford from the Dolphins in exchange for a 2022 seventh-round pick

It's a highly-unusual deal between division foes. 207 of 6-foot-2 Ford's 225 snaps this season have come in the slot. That's a place where Bill Belichick is always looking to add, but the Pats' need for experience there is acute after losing Julian Edelman to injured reserve. Ford has 18 grabs for 184 yards this season, but ESPN's Cameron Wolfe guesses the Dolphins would like to get Malcolm Perry, Lynn Bowden Jr. and Antonio Callaway more opportunities. It also benefits "big slot" man Mike Gesicki. Ford could quickly become PPR relevant for target-desperate New England.

NFL Media's Lance Zierlein compares Virginia Tech WR Isaiah Ford to Justin Hunter.

The 6-foot-1, 174-pounder has good height and great athleticism, but his frame and propensity to get shoved around by physical corners gives evaluators pause. "His play strength is concerning as NFL cornerbacks will consistently challenge him off the line of scrimmage," Zierlein wrote. "He also has to prove he can be effective when facing zone coverage. He has the height and speed to be a deep-ball menace in the right scheme, but he has a little lower floor than some Day 2 receiver prospects in this draft." Ford caught 79 passes for 1,094 yards and seven touchdowns last season to earn second-team All-ACC honors.

Pro Football Focus compares Virginia Tech WR Isaiah Ford to former Arizona Cardinals WR Steve Breaston.

"Breaston carved out a solid career for a few years as a complementary receiver. He could use his frame to go up and get the ball," notes the PFF analysis gang, "and while Ford wins with more body control than physicality, he has the ability to move the chains even when he’s covered or when passes thrown inaccurately in his direction." NFL Media's Lance Zierlein offers up a more contemporary comparison, as he sees a bit of Justin Hunter in the 6-foot-1, 174-pound Hokies draft hopeful. You can reasonably expect to hear his name to be called at some point on Day 2 or early on Day 3.

Virginia Tech junior WR Isaiah Ford will forego his final season of collegiate eligibility to enter the 2017 NFL Draft.

Ford is fresh off his second consecutive 1,000-yard season with the Hokies. In 13 games during the 2016 campaign, he caught 79 passes for 1,094 yards and seven touchdowns. Over the summer, CBS Sports draft analyst Dane Brugler noted that while the 6-foot-1, 174-pounder doesn't necessarily possess run-out-of-socks speed, he makes up for that with "deliberate pauses and body fakes" in order to get open. Ford should land comfortably on Day 2, but could potentially draw some late first-round love.

Patriots WR Isaiah Ford didn't play a snap in the team's Week 10 win against the Ravens.

Acquired from the Dolphins this month, Ford was active but did not take the field for New England. Jakobi Meyers continued his run as the Pats' target-hog WR1 with Damiere Byrd playing 72 percent of the team's snaps and failing to record a target. It's hard to imagine there's room for more than one fantasy relevant pass catcher in New England's offense.

Patriots waived WR Isaiah Ford.

Acquired from the Dolphins at the trade deadline for a late-round pick in 2022, Ford didn't play a snap for the Patriots. By cutting Ford, the Patriots made room for Donte Moncrief on the 53-man roster. Ford could be back on the practice squad.

Oooof, never even got a chance after looking good in Miami.

Dolphins signed WR Isaiah Ford to the practice squad.

Ford didn't play a snap for the Patriots following his Election Day acquisition from the Dolphins. Although the Patriots abandoned ship, coach Bill Belichick has said they will still be sending what is believed to be a 2022 seventh-rounder to Miami. The 'Fins have since developed an acute need at wideout, particularly in the slot, so Ford might not spend much time on the taxi squad. Ford caught 18 balls for 184 yards before the trade.

Dolphins re-signed WR Isaiah Ford.

Miami traded Ford to the Patriots at last year’s deadline and claimed him off waivers when they cut him in December. He was non-tendered this offseason but rejoins a crowded depth chart, with Allen Hurns, Albert Wilson, Jakeem Grant, and Mack Hollins all competing for spots. The Dolphins waived Brian Cole and OL Tyler Gauthier to make room for Ford.

Dolphins released WR Isaiah Ford.

Ford played 50% of the snaps or more in six Dolphins games last season, and inbetween his two stints in Miami last year, was sent to New England for a conditional sixth-round pick and then waived. Ford was non-tendered in the offseason and had just two targets in Week 1 of the preseason. It's a quiet ending in Miami for a receiver who lit up the 2020 transactions wire. There are plenty of other Patriots regimes in the wild, so perhaps he will latch on to a new one.

Giants signed WR Isaiah Ford.

They have also added WR Keelan Doss. The No. 237 overall pick of the 2017 Draft, Ford actually played out his entire rookie contract in Miami but was allowed to walk this spring. He caught at least 12 balls each of the past three years but has only two career scores. He has a limited history of returns on special teams, so the third unit probably won't be his golden ticket to cracking the Giants' 53-man roster.
