Dynasty & Redraft: WR Marqise 'albino tiger' Lee, Patriots (1 Viewer)

Rotoworld:

Marqise Lee (knee) will not participate in this week's minicamp.

Lee's left knee is the latest nagging issue to sideline him. It wouldn't be a big deal if he didn't already have a reputation for being stuck in the training room and if he didn't underperform as a rookie. Lee is expected back for training camp.

Rotoworld:

The Florida Times Union projects Marqise Lee as the Jags' No. 3 wideout entering camp, behind Allen Hurns.

Lee's rookie year started with a nagging hamstring issue and ended with some disappointing on-field performances. Then he missed most of the offseason program due to a knee issue. Lee will have ground to make up if he's going to beat out Hurns for the right to line up opposite rising stud Allen Robinson in two-wide sets. We want more upside in our late-round fliers.

Rotoworld:

Marqise Lee (knee) is expected to be ready for the start training camp.

Lee was held out of minicamp and most of the offseason program due to a knee issue. The Jaguars will limit his reps, but he should be close to fully healthy. Lee enters camp as the No. 3 receiver behind Allen Robinson and Allen Hurns.

The dude's made of glass. So glad the Chiefs passed on him.
I over drafted this guy since I'm a Jags homer. I then tried to trade for him in any league I could if I could get him fairly cheap. But now I'm debating cutting him. Seems he's always hurt. I don't get the sense that he is rehabbing as best he can and really trying to get on the field. I'm quickly losing hope in him.

Last year Marquise Lee was considered a first round draft pick before the draft process but fell. When the season began WR Allen Hurns emerged as a deep threat then WR Allen Robinson came back from his injury when Lee had rookie struggles. At the end of the year when A-Rob got injured and Lee came alive.

This offseason the Jags washed their hands of WR Justin Blackmon and WR Ace Sanders. QB Blake Bortles is entering his second season and the Jags have bolstered their O-Line and run game but WR Marquise Lee is recuperating from a knee injury.

How bad is it?

In reading the recent story about Marquise Lee being eased-in to playing time it doesn't sound alarming:

The Jags held Lee out of minicamp due to a knee injury he sustained this offseason. The team plans to bring him along slowly when training camp beings on July 30.

"My understanding is that he'll be ready to go (next week)," receivers coach Jerry Sullivan said Wednesday, per the Florida Times-Union. "But we have to manage him a little bit to make sure he's OK in term so his health."
Sounds like he likely will miss or be limited at the start of camp. I can see how people who drafted him high would be frustrated but for anyone else his value is probably really low and is dipping into bargain territory because he has upside.

Lee had issues learning the offense and suffered rookie WR struggles however at the end of the year he made a couple of impressive plays.

I think at his current price he is worth a flyer because no one is talking about his upside.

Marqise Lee has been cleared. Bradley is excited for him. He likes what he's seen, specifically in his approach.

I hope Faust is getting paid by FBG.. because he is single handedly keeping this forum afloat.
Faust is repeating what Roto reports. They should be paying him. Or coming after him for posting their news on a competitors site?

Rotoworld:

Marqise Lee has been "noticeably inconsistent" at training camp.

After missing OTAs with a knee injury, Lee has struggled with his conditioning. He's also had drop issues and showed bad form in individual drills. Limited to 13 games (492 snaps) as a rookie, Lee has done nothing to make him a second-year leap candidate. Lee remains behind Allen Hurns for the Z-receiver job.

Rotoworld:

Jaguars WR Marqise Lee (hamstring) is targeting the third preseason game to make his return.

In other words, he isn't going to play in either of Jacksonville's first two preseason games, and "may" play in the regular season dress rehearsal. At this point, Lee stands very little chance at passing Allen Hurns before Week 1.

Marqise Lee - WR - Jaguars

Marqise Lee (hamstring) is expected to miss another two weeks.

Lee's initial timetable was set at two weeks. With those two weeks running out, coach Gus Bradley said he needs another two weeks. Severely injury-prone since entering the NFL, Lee is far behind Allen Hurns as the No. 2 receiver.

Rotoworld:

Marqise Lee secured two catches for 27 yards and added one rush for 12 yards in the Jaguars' Week 2 win over the Dolphins.

Lee was never much of a factor in this one, but at least he’s back on the field after missing most of camp with a hamstring injury. Now that he’s gotten his feet wet, we’d expect the training wheels to come off for Lee next week against New England.

Sep 20 - 8:27 PM

Rotoworld:

Marqise Lee (hamstring) has been downgraded to questionable for Week 3.

It's another setback for Lee, who was listed as probable. Jacksonville promoted WR Tony Washington from the practice squad, suggesting Lee won't play this week.

Lee is indeed the 'albino tiger at the zoo'

A very fitting nickname that the Jags OC tagged him with!

Rotoworld:

Marqise Lee exited Week 3 against the Patriots with a strained hamstring.

Lee battled the hamstring all week and was listed as questionable. The Jaguars can't count on Lee for anything; he's hurt far more often than not.

Sep 27 - 1:52 PM

Rotoworld:

When asked about Marqise Lee (hamstring), Jaguars coach Gus Bradley said "I wouldn't put a timeframe on him."
It doesn't sound like Lee is any closer to getting back on the field. He hasn't played since Week 3 against the Patriots. With Allen Robinson and Allen Hurns both thriving, Lee's role will be limited upon his return.

Just place him on IR already. He can spend the rest of the year getting healthy and working on the Jugs machine to learn how to catch a ball not attached to his body.

Rotoworld:

Marqise Lee wasn't targeted in Jacksonville's Week 11 win over the Titans.

Coming off a brutal Week 10, Lee was utterly invisible, playing behind Bryan Walters. Much like his rookie campaign, Lee's sophomore season is shaping up as lost.

Jaguars OC Greg Olson said WR Marqise Lee has "gotten better" this offseason.
"We wanted to give Marqise a chance to play a couple different positions at wide receiver so it’s good to have him out there," Olson said. "He’s been very steady and he looks good. We’ll continue to push him." Blake Bortles has already talked about how excited he was to get an "extended period" of work with Lee this spring, and it sounds like Olson likes seeing what The Albino Tiger can do when healthy. If he is able to stay on the field, Lee should win the No. 3 job.

The Florida Times Union's Ryan O'Halloran reports the Jaguars feel like anything they get out of third-year WR Marqise Lee will be a bonus.
Nicknamed The Albino Tiger because of how infrequently he graces the practice field, Lee has managed to play in just 23 games through his first two seasons. He has been healthy this offseason, however, and reportedly saw plenty of snaps with the first team. Lee can be a dynamic complement to starters Allen Robinson and Allen Hurns, but he has to stay healthy.

ESPN Jaguars reporter Michael DiRocco believes Marqise Lee will be the team's "breakout star" this season.
It is unlikely Lee gets enough work to truly breakout as long as Allen Robinson and Allen Hurns are healthy, but this is still a positive sign. Limited by injuries his first two seasons, Lee has finally had a healthy training camp, and he looks locked into the No. 3 job. He has also earned praise from coach Gus Bradley, who said he has shown more "maturity" this offseason. As long as he stays healthy, Lee should start to turn his career around this season.

Remember this kid?  Many thought he was the best / most underrated wr in the 2014 draft.  He was supposed to be the wr1 for the jags.  Injuries derailed him for 2 seasons.  Jags thought enough of him to keep him on the roster despite calling him "the albino tiger" BC he could never stay healthy enough to see him on the field.

They like hurns but remember he's an UDFA.   They have more draft stock invested in Lee

heads up.  Dynasty alert.  This kid is only 24, he's healthy and making plays for 2 weeks in a row, outshining hurns and giving his coaches reason to give him more snaps.  Bortles seems to be looking for him.

May not be long before he is starting on the outside.

This kid has serious talent.  Good dynasty stash.  Maybe too premature for redraft still though.

They just signed Hurns to a 4 year $40mil deal. I think they have more invested in him now.

That said, I like Lee as a cheap end of bench stash. I have a hard time seeing an opportunity for him, but he has some talent.

he and Hurns have roughly the same numbers through 3 games here.  Hurns at 13 for 179 and Lee 12 for 141.  I haven't watch almost any of the Jags this year, but when I have it seemed that when I tuned in it was Lee taking a crossing route for an extra 10 yards and he provided a spark.  Not sure if Hurns is doing the same cause I haven't even seen it but it's worth mentioning that Lee has looked good.  If you believe in talent based on the NFL draft then Lee should take over that #2 in time (and in health).

Good catch.  I was unaware of the hurns contract.  Does muddie things a bit.

We might be looking at the new #1 wr in Jax.  He's getting better and better every week and today led all wrs, leaving Hurns and Arob in the dust.  It doesn't surprise me as he was an even higher draft pick than Arob.  Lee is a baller when healthy.

Rare sighting.

Encouraging, doubt he supplants Robinson. Though he may not have to, Hurns was an example last year that their passing game can support more than one WR.

Not necessarily saying he supplants Arob...I think they have different skill sets.  But its clear bortles likes throwing to Lee and Lee is balling out rt now.  Only reason he's barely rostered in redraft elagues is bc he hasn't scored a TD yet.  I think it's hurns who Lee's emergence hurts most.

I was just addressing the new #1 WR point.

I definitely agree with you they have different skill sets, and they could both thrive, so it will be interesting to see if Lee can build on his current success, in which case maybe Hurns is the odd man out?

I also think Lee is talented, he has just been disappointing due to constant injury, no doubt many have written him off, and that is a time dynasty bargains can be found. If he could have come out a year earlier, his stock was much higher (speculative, possibly his sub-optimal 40 time would have still kept him out of the first round regardless?). As you alluded to, he wasn't drafted higher for nothing. I certainly wouldn't blow up my team to acquire him :) , but in the one league I drafted him, holding him as imo there is a lot more upside than downside from here.

He sucks. He's small. He's slow. He's weak.

Trade him now.
Let me call you out here for a lazy, misleading and overall worthless post.

Lee is bigger than Antonio Brown with a similar 40 time (edit: want to make it clear that I'm not saying he's AB, but rather that 6' 192lb with a 4.5 40 is plenty good enough to be a quality WR). His SPARQ was a solid 126.4. He had incredible production as a college sophomore (1700/14) but tailed off significantly as a junior (800/4) in his draft year. He's not a burner nor a guy with massive catch radius but he's still a WR with plus athleticism, strong college production, RAC ability and good draft pedigree.

Personally, I'm on the fence with the him but either offer some actual insight or don't waste people's time with banal generalities.

His NFL.com draft profile:

Marqise Lee

Strengths

Very good athletic ability. Is a nifty runner after the catch -- can navigate through traffic and create with the ball in his hands. Can shift into top gear and run by tacklers -- terrific acceleration and short-area burst. Fine route runner -- understands how to set up defensive backs and has an innate feel for coverage. Understands how to manipulate man and zone coverage and can create separation when he needs to uncover. Very good hand-eye coordination. Tracks the deep ball very well -- has a knack for running underneath it. Attacks the ball and plucks it out of the sky. Very good competitive, functional playing speed. Has game-breaking return ability -- exceptional vision and traffic burst.

Weaknesses

Average size and run strength. Does not break many tackles. Was slowed by nagging injuries, and body is not built to withstand a lot of punishment. Can do a better job securing the ball through traffic -- has shown a tendency to flag the ball. Long-term durability could become an issue.

Draft Projection

Round 1

Bottom Line

An extremely motivated, dynamic, playmaking receiver, Lee's junior season was plagued by shoulder, knee and leg injuries and a revolving door at head coach, where he cycled through three. Showed all the traits desired in a No. 1 receiver early in his career and has overcome a lot of adversity in his life to get to this point.

Just checked out Lee's targets, and he's had 6-8 for the last four games.

I'm not convinced that Lee is going to continue to make Robinson and Hurns lackluster going forward, but by the same token, there's no guarantee of pecking order for targets. It's not like Lee doesn't have talent either in addition to Hurns and Robinson.
