Eagles land Jim Washburn to coach DL (1 Viewer)

Washburn is fantastic.

This is not to say the Eagles don't already have good players on their DL or anything of that sort.

I believe he is arguably the best DL coach in the game, it'll be a huge loss for the Titans and that Eagles fans will notice a difference that might not be apparent right now.

Eagles will have no DL questions for as long as he is under contract.

Everyone plays well under him. You don't wonder why player X isn't playing anymore. It's just that he's either not ready, not behaving well, or something that is just assumed by having a top DL coach.

Hopefully for the Eagles, they don't force him to make something out of nothing with rookies every year and send big free agents elsewhere. If they do though, it'll be fine.

I can't say enough about this guy and to every Eagles fan that think it might be a bit much to think so much of a positional coach....give it time. You're gonna love this guy's work too.

Exciting news. But to the bolded, not only will they give him rooks, those rooks will not be D-lineman. Most likely a crap load of TE's that they want to convert, to 'have the best athlete's on the field'. Regardless, I like that they are making coaching changes throughout the defense-this team has lost a big part of its identity since JJ passed away.

Albert Haynseworth didn't really excel under this guy until he started training with Chuck Smith. Prolly has more to do with the headcase that is AL Haynsw Not necessarily an indictment of him, as almost every other DL he has had has been productive, but food for thought.

Does this signal the end of the fischer era?

But the counter argument would be that he ONLY did well under this guy and was a legitimate MVP candidate which is extremely rare for a DT.

He is only under contract for one more year. Much of his staff has just finished up their deals. Some are re-signing. He didn't get a new deal but a sorta "wait N see" attitude from Bud Adams so the one more year is important for Fish and the rest of em'. Like the article said, Washburn has to debate if he's looking for a longterm deal (He is 61) or whatnot. Probably safe to say both Reid and Fisher would give him a healthy amount of latitude to feel comfy doing his job.Defensive coordinator Chuck Cecil used to be Fisher's teammate and many feel he's likely gone. Leslie Frazier also used to be and something is up with their former teammate Mike Singletary. I don't know what. There's just rumors. Singletary was definitely interested in the Titans, but there's a slew of tangents one could go off on (like replacing his buddy Fisher, replacing his buddy Cecil, coaching the D without Washburn) that have turned the Titans from a likely destination to a surprisingly uncomfy one for Singletary. It seems much smoother to just go coach with his pal in Minny but then again he'd surely learn a bunch working under Fisher.Anyhow the Titans staff is sorta still taking shape.I 100% expect Schwartz and the Lions to hear Washburn is available and try and swoop in here and snag him. Schwartz loves the guy and with super-rook and Vandy he can probably make a decent case to the Fords to spend some extra $ here on a positional coach.

This is BIG for the Eagles and their DE fantasy owners. This should work out really nicely. My only thought is : because he does so much rotational stuff, will it actually hurt any particular DE's individual stats?

Regarding the "end of fisher" part: Peter King reported this morning that it really just indicates that fisher is getting more say so in having his own tailored staff. I don't know what the arrangement was before but he made it sound as if a lot fo the coaching staff that Fisher has isn't his hand-picked guys.

The Eagles have always been big on rotating the d-line when possible, so his philosophy should mesh well with that.

I thought Haynesworth excelled because he was a free agent in his last year, and decided to work hard in the offseason.

What gives me hope is the fact that Jason Babin apparently couldn't play for the Eagles, then he goes to Tennessee and works with this guy and makes the pro bowl!

Babin was traded away by the Texans after they gave up on him to the Seahawks who later cut him. Picked up and cut by the Chiefs. Picked up and cut by the Eagles. Picked up by Tenn and goes to Pro-Bowl. Go figure!

Babin actually played well for the Eagles as part of their rotation. He had 2.5 sacks in spot duty. But I don't think anyone thought he was pro bowlmaterial.

Just read on PE.com that Babin, who is a free agent, would consider signing with the Eagles since Washburn has been hired there.

That couldn't hurt.

Haynesworth was a monster for more than just that last year. And if he gets traded, to a 4-3 team, or gets cut, I suspect he'll be productive. Lazy, un-motivated, blah blah blah. Haynesworth at half speed can still make a lot of plays.

I don't like that statement by PK. Washburn would have been one of Fisher's guys and clearly their DC was/is. And after losing their DL coach, OL Mike Munchak may just have Fisher on his knees at Bud Adams desk begging for a 100mil raise for Munchak.Norm Chow...I don't recall, might not have been Fisher's choice but like Fisher he was a USC guy. Heimerdinger was Fisher's OC for years, went to Denver, and then came back.I know it's not you, but there's enough holes in that statement to drive a fleet of trucks through

A buddy of mine thinks this puts the Eagles in the Supe.

I wouldn't go that far or anything, but that is a decent indicator of how excellent a coach he is to stir up such a thought.

There's many tweets on it-I don't think Haynesworth goes to Philly.

The notion of Washburn turning him into "a monster" again is too much concern for the Redskins and it'll throw off his trade value which should be fairly low right now. There's 28 other teams they could trade him to and not be concerned.

I can't imagine any team taking on his contract and I gotta wonder about the ginormous cap hit the Redskins would take.

His bonus is going to hurt them whether he's there or not and it's not going with him in a trade. If he's cut, they gotta "eat" a ton of $.

Salary-wise, the Redskins seem trapped. Yes they overpaid for him and should pay A price as penalty (driving market price for other owners, "stole" him away from Ten fans etc) but they shouldn't be stuck with him-can't cut, can't trade. Look for Snyder to be begging at the CBA discussions for some relief here.

Good, the Eagles defense has been sub-par for the last two years. And I hope to God Fat Albert is not an eagle next year..

Why would the Eagles want Babin? I would love to see them add Haynesworth. He doesn't like playing a spacehog in a 3-4. He would be blessed to play for the Eagles.

As for Washburn's importance, it really depends on the coordinator/defense style.

I don't know, maybe because he just got 12.5 sacks for the new Eagles DL coach he says is the best coach he ever played for?Nah, that couldn't be it.
