Eagles Sign QB Nordgren

May 22, 2006

By CHRIS McPHERSON

He took advantage of his opportunity.

The Eagles announced Monday that they have signed rookie free agent quarterback Matt Nordgren. Nordgren participated in the post-draft mini-camp on a tryout basis.

QB Matt Nordgren

"I've always thought I had the talent," Nordgren told the Associated Press. "Donovan McNabb can whip it pretty good when he wants, but I've got as strong an arm as anybody there."

Nordgren is now the fifth quarterback on the Eagles roster along with McNabb, Jeff Garcia, Koy Detmer and Timmy Chang. Nordgren will battle for a backup spot behind McNabb.

The 6-5, 235-pound Nordgren is used to being on the depth chart behind a star quarterback. He was the backup to University of Texas quarterback Vince Young, who was drafted No. 3 overall by the Titans, on last year's National Championship team.

Nordgren had limited experience as a quarterback during his tenure at Texas completing 8-of-14 passes for 60 yards, but he was a holder on special teams last season.

One Eagle was quite familiar with Nordgren's ability. Running back Ryan Moats and Nordgren were teammates at Bishop Lynch High School in Dallas.

"He was brought in for a tryout and I think he did well," said Moats in his blog for PhiladelphiaEagles.com. "Everything they asked him to do, he did right ... I hope that I was able to help ease him into the process."

Apparently so. Nordgren will participate as an official member of the Eagles at the team's rookie camp beginning May 25.

Did anyone else think immediately of the giant sized fellow cop in Police Squad whose head was always above the top of the frame in every shot when they saw this thread title?

Nordberg?

Another backup in college is getting a look in Indy - David Koral of UCLA. He even got a bigger UDFA signing bonus than the starter, Drew Olson.

I think Matt Cassel's success is causing teams to take a longer look at backup QBs in the big time programs.

LOL That was my first thought as well, although I believe the tall guy in Police Squad was "Al". (Nordberg was O.J. Simpson).

Belichick, blazing a new trail, again.

I would cite AJ Feeley as a better example.

Actually, the Eagles are following the path they created for themselves with the A J Feeley Experience...A fifth round pick they traded for a 2nd rounder a few years later.

Good call, forgot about Feeley.edit to add: on further examination, nordgren and koral are more like cassel than feeley. All of three of them barely even saw the field in college. Feeley still had eight starts in his career, so teams had some game tape to evaluate. Cassel, Koral and Nordgren saw NO extended meaningful action in their division I college careers.
